I find the Raven to be worth while as a BPO base for running fittings while level up to use stronger gear. I used it in that role during the closed beta and have never regretted getting one.

ps ~ I know some others will disagree with me on this point but I avoid buying any expendable AUR items aside from UVT and Passive/Active Boosters. Communication and faster SP gains are more valuable to me than the temporary edge gained through use of the expendable AUR items. |

How much do those BPOs cost? 19 800 right?
Look at it this way:
a Neo costs 90 a pop.
With 19 800 you can buy up to 220 Neo suits, restocking whenever you need more; Or you can just buy a permanent copy which won't do you much good after you've hit Advanced suits and beyond.
I'm not dissing the BPOs, I'm just giving you a different perspective. |

Neither. Type-II is 50 times better than Type-I for assault suit. Get Type-II and complex shield extenders. |

i'd get the raven dropsuit and fit it with a combination of bpo and militia items just to keep the isk cost of the suit down. the raven is basically a permanent assault type 1 dropsuit that's not gimped like the starter fits. it makes saving up for more expensive fittings easier.
my raven fitting is the one i use the most because it costs me about 5,000 isk. if i make 200,000 isk per match, i'd have to die 40 times in that fitting to not make any isk in a match. that gives me more disposable income to play around with. meanwhile, in one of my more expensive fittings, i could die 7 times and lose isk after a match. |

This is a point, when I first picked up my Raven the prices hadn't been adjusted.
I'd still advocate getting it over disposable mods for two reasons.
1. It's stronger than the starter fits, and with a bit more AUR you can create a 100% BPO fit out of it. This makes a great baseline for earning back your ISK while honing your more expensive fits.
2. For best effect train you core skills first and only then focus on a better suit. The assaulters I run with use the rule "only 1/4 of total SP should be invested into dropsuits" this ensures that you're not paying the price of an expensive suit without being able to fit it properly.
Now to be clear, the above quoted text is not inaccurate and should be considered. The conclusions I, and the players I run with, have come too differ however so I'm presenting a bit more about them.
Cheers, Cross
ps ~ I have a personal bias which it's important that I mention. I have played closed beta, this is a bias in that it's allowed me to test out higher end gear without the use of AUR and thus I'm greatly unmotivated to use expendable AUR mods. The main advantage of AUR mods (in my opinion) is their ability to allow you to test for yourself what the effect of investing more SP in a given area will be. That is well worth the price, but it is an effect that most closed beta testers no longer benefit from due to the wipes/resets we've been through. |

And people forget that you make more money the better you do. I make on average 400k isk a match. Sometimes close to 450k, sometimes close to 350k, but 400k isk seems to be the usual. My "gear" is kind of expensive: ~1mil isk a pop now. I'd definitely make more $ in militia, but I seem to make more $ if I run in type 2 with complex shield extenders and a GEK. The extra $ I earn offsets the occasional death. (I can't do the better suits on this guy- all points in tank stuff lol) |

When I first started my assault run I used the Raven as I had the suit from a merc pack and it's great bpo suit but the type-II assault is so much better. At 10k isk it's not even that expensive if you don't die silly amount of times in a game.
For learning purposes and for a new player the Raven might be a better choice as it will let them accumulate ISK more easily and not have to worry about dying as much as they would with a type-II suit. |

Regarding whether the BPO will pay off in the long run... Lots of folks have a "fall back fit",
- a fit they use at the beginning of Ambush matches to establish territory / get past being killed on the initial spawn and
- when the match has gone bad and they don't want to loose any more ISK than they have to and
- when they are just fooling around
In general, whenever they want to play but don't want to commit their best fits. The Raven is a step up from militia gear for a move effective fall back fit. |

usually a 1.2m tank
I used it as an extreme example. On my infantry alt I still make more running decent gear than militia/basic stuff. Really just a lvl 2 suit and complex shield extenders with an exile AR. The difference between running decent gear vs militia is barely noticeable. I did a spreadsheet and found out I made on average 37,000 more isk running in decent gear than I did in militia (I took into account the loss of my gear in this calculation).
Anyways, I I'd say I still make 250-350 as infantry. It's just not as big as those 450k isk games :D |
