I officially love this game, but when a hotfix arises, why does hit detection atrophy? Let me put it this way. Swung at random noob with nova knife. Heard the blades smack the back of his neck. Swung 3 more times (charge swings.) Nothin'. Blue flash and the "you smacked my shield but did nothing" sound. It is far worse with assault rifles. Used a Tac AR yesterday. Went 16-0. It was miserable. 1 out of every 2-3 bullets fired did no damage. That's horrible! I conducted an experiment yesterday. I stood behind an enemy sniper and unleashed (he didn't see me.) 12 bullets fired. All hit him in the back of his melon. He is somehow able to move afterwards. How is that possible??If there's one thing that needs to be fixed ASAP, fix the HIT DETECTION PLEASE!!!! Thank you. |

Agreed. Unfortunately, this has been an issue for months now. It is WAY better than it was, but still off. This is the reason why, when you run around a corner, your still getting hit after you've rounded it. Hit box is off, not centered. Not to mention the L..................AG. Yesterday I was taking out large turrets with my Swarm & it took a full 1 to 1 1/2 seconds for damage to register after impact. |

Dust uses client-side hit detection for graphics & sounds, and server-side hit detection for applying damage to the target. This is a compromise that gives you immediate feedback for your actions (shield flash and sounds) while also being difficult to exploit.
Unfortunately, due to network latency and packet loss it is not possible to guarantee that your client and the server will always be in sync. When they aren't it is entirely possible for your client to show a hit but the server not to register any damage.
"Lag" is the term used when updates just take too long to get between your PS3 and the server (or vice versa). The guy you were shooting had actually moved on before you took your shot, but his update hadn't reached your PS3 yet.
"Desync" happens when your PS3 just misses an update entirely, and its internal model of the battlefield is not the same as the server's. The game should re-sync itself automatically (you may see people "teleporting" when this happens), but from what I've seen this doesn't always happen.
In addition to lag and desync, for ranged weapons you also need to factor in falloff and spread.
"Falloff" is a decrease in damage at extreme range. Far into falloff it is possible for you to hit, but not to do any significant damage.
"Spread" is where your bullets don't go directly to the center of the target. When using a high spread weapon it is possible for your crosshairs to be directly on the center of the target, and still to miss them.

Yeah I love when I can see the particles of my shotgun hitting people in the face and doing roughly 10 damage |
