Shields recharge fast out of combat but can't recharge during combat. You can equip mods to heal armor every second plus repair tools to heal you while in combat, but not nearly as fast. So it just depends on what is more useful to your play style. |

@OP: Dropsuits, Drop Ships, LAVs or HAVs?
Dropsuits are tied to your play style and what you enjoy. Armor absorbs more damage but slows all movement speed. Low level Shield Extenders add 22hp which is not even one round from most weapons. Recharging shields can be more beneficial as it reduces the recharge time as well as the restart of same.
To understand it best just look at the Suit variations as Scout has nearly nothing of either but is very fast. Heavies has either some shields with a lot of armor or a more even split. However, they are the slowest on the Battlefield.
Everything that is not a Dropsuit follows the same pattern but HAVs have a 1900hp shield extender as well as similar armor modules that adds large amounts as well. They simply make the shield versus armor mostly an either or type of decision.
Add that is informative but none of it will keep you alive.
Pause behind cover and let your shields recharge. Use cover, flank or attack from behind or above (at Heavies in particular). Reload your weapon. Stop by Supply Depots to reload. If you are carrying a Hive drop on in and intersection or in cover. The intersection will let Blues get ammo just going through it while the under cover variant will allow them to recharge as well.
Try to enter every engagement with full armor, shields and ammo. At least do it to the best of your ability under the circumstances. If there is a Logi Bro (logistics suit) with a funny looking glowing device that looks like an SMG that is their armor repair tool. Let them repair you. If you are down and the UI prompts you to press Square do it. If a Logi Bro is near by it will prompt you with a triage message.
The list goes on and on. Continue reading the Training ground.

As a basic over-generalization, shield tanking is better for lone wolfing and armor tanking is better for running with a balanced squad. |

They're not mutually exclusive, use both -- until you need the slots for some other modules that is ;).
Unlike EVE dual tanking is perfectly viable, at least for dropsuits.

shields are good but can be totally negated by a flux (emp) grenade.. putting armor on an assault can throw your enemy for a loop because ppl are used to fighting shield tanked assaults and an armor tanked assault can surprise your opponent some. |

Here's what I think (since you haven't told us your playstyle yet)
Vehicles (focusing on survivability)- armor Vehicles (focusing on damage)- shields Infantry (focusing on survivability- shields Infantry (focusing on damage)- armor
I'm mostly saying this because of a very simple fact- passive turret mods on vehicles are low slots, while damage mods on infantry are high slots. |

What does armor have to do with what type of blaster I use? Can't I use a blaster turret with shield tanks too? |

It doesn't but often shield tanks like the gunloggi have poor PG and thus less available for modules. But really you can have a shield blaster tank (I have such a tank as a high mobility blaster) but since being close range often subjects you to a lot of enemy fire, armour typically does better with a blaster. |

I don't roll HAVs seriously, but I do have a pretty good militia fit- armor hardeners are pretty good, and boost (go fast) modules appear to have a positive effect. That, and there's nothing better to put in high slots, aside from damage control units. |

I know you don't want to give away your tank fitting. No good tanker does. But when you said "boost" were you referring to shield boosters? |

I go with both. extender + recharger, plates + rep. At the moment I can pick a fight with better guys/equipment and win. I'll be blown to bits while doing so, but just get into cover and wait for the shield to recharge. I do admit you need to aim quite well to be the winner.
WIth a hive and nades + GEK you need to get some skills to reduce CPU usage or it won't fit. Still from what I've been using it seems the best fit for me at least.
With somewhat good tactics, cover and with use of nades you pretty much hold of semi-passive attackers quite well. Last night I dropped three and kept another two at bay when they decided to "semi-storm" the objective. I would have been toast if they had just outright stormed the place, but they decided to "play smart" and thus made the wrong choice.
That's eve. |

That's why I said (go fast) after boost |
