The reason why the game still feels unpolished. there is no sense of urgency.
I'm not talking about gameplay, I'm speaking totally of there is no urgent need for mercs to deploy en masse.
Currently pubmatches are the only way to gain ISK/SP and let's face it, the corporation contracts are more for bragging rights than having any effect.
There simply is no driving need to become engaged. Grind Sp, run around and shoot stuff, and log off when you hit cap.
Corporation contracts, for example, provide a phenomenal vehicle for potential warfare. The way it's set up, there is no real reward.
Oh wait, you can win 900,000 ISK for your corp in the vcoin toss, but it really amounts to... Losing a crapton of your most expensive fits. FW should be the vehicle driving players to new heights of aggressive innovation. the entire effing lowsec setting should be ablaze with corporations accepting contracts for the payout, whether that payout is in ISK, dropsuits, modules, etc. could be picked out. Each merc gets paid X amount of ISk for victory. the commander who accepted the contract gains X number of dropsuits/modules/weapons/etc. to distribute among his best troops, or troops that need a boost.
Let's talk numbers, the truly motivated among us would SALIVATE at the opportunity to earn rewards that could potentially keep us solvent in at least good fits. it would encourage people to not be scrooges with their ISK and encourage them to not be risk-averse.
Let's face it, most of us blow up more **** than we can replace in pubmatches unless we're cool with breaking even. You know... i'm cool with pubmatches being that way. Corporation battles should be that place where you pop the cork on the general's champaign, do a quick roll in the hay with his daughter, and go in knowing that you get to unload.
There's little reason to just...go...nuts.
Winners should get the rewards described above.
Losers should get a decent ISK pittance for actually stepping up to the fight.
Open up all the planets. all the contracts. Get rid of this collateral coinflip and i guarantee you the pace will pick up and start rocking so hard that CCP will likely start seeing the level of destructive violence they want. |

could be, but I'm not seeing the problem as one in how the game plays now.
it's not "this feels unbalanced," or "that is underpowered." it's not the graphical glitching or the inclusion of only 4 dropsuits.
It's a lack of things to motivate players and corps to do the things we do in EVE. Right now Sp gain is the end goal, the motivation to play.
i think the corp contracts being redone would fix the problem I'm seeing, honestly.
Like I said, there's not really anything urgent that people can rally behind.
The merc contracts are occasionally nice, but given the subject matter and explanation, FF should have been turned on so that if people wanted to sabotage the dragonaur objective they could have awoxed their team.
Make the corp contracts pay out rather than be a ISK wager, and I think more people will go for them, and the battles would happen in realtime rather than on a magical future time schedule.

I think you've possibly misunderstood the "beta" point.
CCP seem to have a different attitude to beta testing to most other games companies. It isn't just a pre-release to drum up interest prior to official launch. And it isn't just a buggy version of a the final feature set for us to test.
In CCP's model, they actually want us, the players, to help them define the features and the gameplay. The closed and open betas are their mechanism for doing that.
Your OP is part of that process, btw.
I posted this fake press release in another thread a while back...
"TEST alliance today launched their latest campaign in Malpais with simultaneous ground attacks on over 300 districts on planets held by SOLR. Almost five thousand ground troops were deployed in a coordinated move, supported by a large sub- & super-cap space fleet. The ground attacks disabled around 20 cyno jammers in total, resulting in a significant number of POS being reinforced. TEST leadership observed: 'we were going for the shock and awe effect with this'. "
If you think about the changes to the game required to make this possible it isn't actually that much. The 300 individual district battles use existing skirmish game mechanics. The ability for Dust battles to affect system sovereignty in Eve is already there. All that would be required are the strategic elements: the ability to create 300 battle contracts; tools for coordinating the activities of thousands of mercs, etc. |
