I see the old thread coming back to life. Careful, it was a locked and closed thread that got me banned, and you wouldn't want that to happen to you.
On a real not, the sexual harassment, racially charged innuendo, obviously discriminatory comments, and the like seem to have no end in their occurrence. To be off mic and to say nothing is to give tacit consent to the action. IF you have your mic on and you voice your concern for what is being said, then you can be an active participant in helping mitigate this occurrence.
This is to say that the act itself, especially in this day and age or in any day and age for that matter, is unnecessary, unwanted, and it corrupts people because of the fact of their exposure to such acts (i.e., socialization).
If you want change, be the change that you seek. Be intelligent and compassionate in how you address the issue with the person committing the transgression. THEN go out on the battlefield and teach them a thing or two.
BUT to be on the safe side, when it does happen, feel free, like others have suggested, to post the occurrence up on the forums and use embarrassment and humiliation on the forums to instigate those individuals to change their behavior through some good old fashion peer pressure. OR be the adult and pull them off to the side and have a conversation with them and address the issue of your dislike for the comments and actions portrayed onto you. THEN if that doesn't work, SHAME THEM AWAY! |

And you making a big deal over it is not the best way to go about it. There is a block function, and a mute option. And getting irritated because some people are "hounding" you is a bit ridiculous... especially when everyone is stuck on the bridge without a choice anyway.
And there is always those people who are just ingrates, or annoying in general. Mute/block them.
I get "hounded" because i have Primordial militia gear. You don't see me posting a thread whining about all the people grinding on my suit trying to get the camera in my dudes crotch.
Please, grow up and enjoy the game for the love of god and all that is holy. You're honestly just part of the problem. "There's nothing wrong with getting lewd comments thrown at you and being harassed for something you cannot control. Just shut up and deal with it" No. There is no reason for anyone to do that, and the guys that do (and those that defend them) are absolute scum. I wonder when our society actually goes beyond this crap.
Careful about making your own decisions that are based upon arbitrary understandings and assumptions. And this is not to say that your statement about not accepting that behavior is not on point, at least in my eyes. Yet the language you used to describe the purported assailant only perpetuates the cycle of attacking and staunchly defending ones actions, no matter how socially and universally out of tune and balance they are.
Throw discriminatory behavior at someone, don't be surprised if you get it back.

It is hard enough having people hover around you in heavy suits and such while you are reading the line up in the waiting room; I don't need to hear them go through puberty at the same time. I get enough of that being on ps home.
Well, if you ever care to squad up, I would be honored to have an intelligent conversation with someone during a match. It seems this social problem is more rampant in our little community than we thought. Then again I noticed it when I posted a thread about the representation of women in DUST. There are a lot of underdeveloped man children (if not people, but it seems that I hear it more from men, if not exclusively from them) in this game, not to mention the institutionalized racism and homophobia.
Only by actively addressing the issue at hand can you hope to produce the change that you seek, primarily through discussion and the development of understanding. Being passive on the mic and not airing the issue as it occurs, you can not hope to address the issue at the source of its occurrence.
Mind you these are only suggestions from a currently narrowed view point that is attempting to widen and expand itself. |

I'm just going to say this: Most women fed up with this behavior have tried, many, many times, to ask (or told) guys to stop harassing them. Most of the time it results in MORE harassment. Very, very rarely will a guy stop because their target asked them to; it is a challenge to them to be worse. You can say "keep trying and someone will eventually stop" but when the normal response is to be worse...is the remote possibility of getting it to stop really better than all the extra harassment received? And...why is it on the woman to get them to stop? What about all the guys that sit there and say nothing?
Fighting viciously with someone though doesn't really produce a long lasting result either. It is only a short term solution. And in all honesty, imposing your will upon someone only produces a situation where the the individual that was imposed upon only seeks those opportunities to escape the imposition of unwanted regimentation.
So be careful on how you begin to approach a problem and devise your solution. By actively interacting and engaging the perpetrator of the offense with a more compassionate stance, you will be able to educate them to the pain their action brings. It is not about it being the responsibility of either just the man or the woman, rather it is the responsibility of both in helping create a more equitable social situation.
Attacking my perceptions and view points are not winning you or anyone else brownie points. I am just offering you an alternative. |

only takes 3 guys to box you in 4 is overkill. and really boxing people in isn't harassment.... unless the same 3 people do it to the same person every single match. [/quote]
Actually, it can be considered harassment. Any kind of unwanted, unsolicited interactions could be categorized as harassment. Be aware to the fact that you are attempting to negate and dispossess a person of their view point, feelings, and perceptions through your statement.
I think one of the biggest issues here is the fact that a majority of the participants in this discussion seem to be in a constant battle to save face and protect/defend their earlier comments, fearing that if they do not do so, that they would be less of a person in the eyes of other participants on the forums. I don't think that would necessarily be the case, yet people do have those kind of conscious and unconscious fears residing within themselves all the time. This also is a product of the socialization that occurs to all of us as we grow up within our respective sociocultural and sociopolitical environments (i.e., school, sports, bars, work places, family homes, etc.).
Also one should attempt to keep in mind that when one judges another's work, posting, comments or what ever, that a person tends to do so through the uniquely shaped lens of perception that was shaped by those environments and events. To think that a single person's view is the only on that matters, can be considered egotistical, arrogant, and narcissistic amongst other ways of attaching pejorative semantical understandings to another person in the hopes of denigrating that person's perceptions and thoughts so as to raise ones' self up and supplant the power dynamic. So to attempt to negate one individual's understanding of an interaction and supplant it with that version that justifies the observer's position is an attempt to seize power from them. |
