I just signed up tonight -- spent my $20 on the Merc Kit, took about an hour going through the menus and tuts. Got outfitted, held off on spending my skill points, expected to get killed a few times.
Get into battle -- Hey, I'm a Artificer, what do I do? Seems Artificer skills are useless. It's like playing a wanna-be COD, but with no feel or thrill.
Get killed. OK, that's fine by me. That's to be expected.
Get killed some more -- still see no reason why the skill class "Artificer" should even exist. No one calls for help, don't know who to heal, and repair what exactly? Honestly, I thought I'd be more like an engineer from Team Fortress or maybe even the Mechromancer from Bordlerlands.
OK, let's spend all my Skill Points, invest it all in Weapons skills, because DAMN, I shot some people up, and it didn't do a damned thing, but they could just turn right around and KILL ME. Lesson learned.
OK, let's spend some of these credits I have on weapons. Get me a stockpile of GEK Assualt Rifles to equip to my default Assualt - Frontline Drop Suit. Can't upgrade shield mods -- sucks
OK, so let's get to battle. See RED Dude running, follow him, find him with his back to me in corridor. EASY KILL! Start unloading clip at POINT BLANK RANGE. He's not dead, have to retreat and reload. Meanwhile, he finally saw where I was after turning around, and fires a quick burst of rounds. I AM DEAD.
RAGE QUIT!!!
Alright -- so I get it. I just joined, many players have been on here for months. But, the game said they would be matching me with people of my level (which is NO LEVEL) And I feel that I am a warzone armed with a squirt gun and football pads for body armor.
The only thing I can think of to continue playing is to join battles and NOT FIGHT, BUT HIDE in order to some day get the skill points I needs to be able to upgrade into stronger suits and acquire guns that I can actually kill something with.
Another less woosie strategy I have thought of is to go for HAVs, but I haven't quite mastered the formula for when I'm capable of getting a vehicle. But at my n00b level and seeing how badly outclassed I am, it seems even a Tank might not be enough to make it playable.
Am I wrong? Is there something else I can do? Is there something I overlooked?
Because as it stands, this game seems damned near unplayable due to the fact that I am hopelessly outclassed in every battle I have joined so far and the limited upgrading I have done has done nothing to making it more playable. I don't mind getting killed, but damn -- getting the drop, emptying clips and dying when the guy so much as looks at you is just too much to take.

Granted, but it sure tries to be (and fails) -- I frankly don't see the point to the game. There's no real cooperation, just people running around aimlessly shooting at things -- just like COD Team Deathmatch. So this might not be the game for me, because frankly I find COD boring as all hell. I want an MMO, I want to BUILD and have teams and friends and and quests and.. and.. well something more than just run and gun. But I just don't see that here.
Razekial Flameclaw wrote:But the main thing i found the single most important thing to me personally - switching out the SMG for the AR - holy s*** I can kill people.
My post was long and a bit of a rambling narrative, so I think you missed the bit where I went to the market and outfitted with a pile of GEKs (advanced AR). I also got 1 experimental AR (Gorekiller or something), but the CPU in my suit couldn't take it. Went to buy new suit since I got loads of cash, but insufficient suit training to get anything but NEO and the low level suits can't be modded at all. So CPU upgrade is OUT.
And I HATE Medic. I stopped playing Medic in Team Fortress Classic back in '98 when they nerfed the poison in the Medkit. I saw the tool icon and thought "Engineer" or more recently in Borderlands 2, Mechromancer. And took their "you can skill out of this initial skill" to heart.
Bad mistake. Seriously. I'm really not interested in this lame "Artificer" class -- I thought it went with the GALLENTE's (my race) propensity for AI and bots. I see now I was very much mistaken, but the in game reading GAVE NO CLUE as to what it's true nature was.
But seeing that I only get about 3000xp per battle, I can see I might never skill out of it. I might be better off quitting all together right now or starting again and spending another $20 on another merc pack seeing that I wasted mine on a character class that I can't stand and who I can't kill with.
When did you start playing? I'm thinking this is an issue with n00bs being tossed in with vets and unlike EVE, you just can't tell at a glance how outclassed you are because everyone looks the same. It's not like OMGWTFBBQ TITAN!!! It's just some dude in a suit running and gunning, So there's no way of telling that your bullets will have no effect on this guy.
I guess I'll try to play it a couple days more -- if I'm not happy by the 5th of Feb I'll be off on Deadspace 3 anyway and I'll just never look back. But, I was hoping to find a home here after DS3, but so far I am severely unimpressed. As it stands, I don't know if I can hold out on this game more than a couple more matches till I'm so frustrated and POd at the futility of it all I might just delete it all together.
Another consideration will be whether or not there will be a shift when this game launches. Will the Vets from Beta be relegated elsewhere due the "match making" actually working? If so, I might just call it quits till release and start again as a newb with other newbs.

Also I should note that I have been paying attention to the death notes on the top right corner. I keep getting killed by dudes with LASER RIFLES.

It will balance out, when it launches live there will be vets with their SP sure, but most vets will be in faction warfare by then.
I take that to heart, because 6 days is not much. But when I see these guys with OMGWTF Laser Rifles who can kill quick over a distance, that makes it tough.
And seeing the rate of fire on the Snipers they have, I probably should have gone with that, because I'm handy as a sniper in some games, but not in COD. But then again, COD doesn't have a 50 Round Per Minute rate of fire on their Snipes.
Strange that this game would go "ultra-real" in some respects, but not in others. maybe that's part of the fabled "eve learning curve".
I will say I play a good support character -- but I just don't see it here. Not a game for much support, too many people doing their own thing and no coordination at all -- at least not from what I've seen. Maybe we see more cooperation with the vets game play.
So I'm thinking that with my (so far) pathetic K/D rate and abysmal SP income, I'd be better of starting from scratch with a new character and a new merc kit and doing a bit more research on the character classes. They should have put a cross on the artificer. Or at least given a bit more in depth reading on the classes., but it's a beta so they can't be faulted for not having the in depth verbage.
Anyway, as it is I think I'll brush up with COD -- which this game clearly wants so hard to be and get in that mentality before taking it seriously.

OK -- a quick change up to ASSUALT-SNIPER (Starter) Drop Suit did the trick
Achieved glorious MULTI-KILLS , had players drop support units for me without me doing a thing and Finished the Match with a positive KDR.
CCP -- for the love of god, put in some accurate descriptions of the classes. BECAUSE THEY DO MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.
I am now officially a sniper. And the SP I put into AR and SMG is wasted (for now)
Because I laid waste with my untrained hands and a Snipe. |
