Though I think most of us consider LAV handling to be sub-par, I think I know something that will improve its ease of use greatly. When turning left or right, the motion of the stick turning left or right SHOULD NOT accelerate the vehicle. It should only make the front wheels turn left or right. Acceleration in either direction should be decided ONLY by forward and back motion of the joystick. The current system makes doing finer turns unnecessarily difficult. |

nb: I haven't played yet today, and I don't think I did any driving yesterday.
I thought the hotfix from yesterday included some improvements to the handling. Pretty sure I heard something 'bout it, anyway. Apologies for not having a link or anything, you know, like, concrete.
As regards controls, I'm of two minds. Sometimes I think I would like to have the gas and brake be buttons, (do [X] and [square] get used on the LAVs as things stand?) or on one stick and the steering on the other. BUT, I don't know how much sense it makes to have the different vehicles' control schemes be all unique. Tanks kind of need the controls on the one stick, because, you know, aiming.
A clanmate mentioned the idea of "real tank" controls: left stick = left tread, right stick = right tread. I think he brought it up in the context of LAVs, but I think it would be better for the HAVs. A potential problem with this idea, of course, is that then you'd probably have to have the big gun be passenger-operated. (Personally, I think I'm fine with that. If Tanky McTanksalot wants to hang out in the damned hills behind the red line the entire game, maybe he _should_ have to have another merc with him to be an effective weapons platform and still be mobile, but, whatever.)
The dropship controls are rather different, but I guess the whole aerial vehicle/ground vehicle dichotomy makes that more reasonable.
Sorry. Back on topic: Yeah. LAVs definitely need a bit o' love on the control front there. Maybe they got some already? I dunno.
As far as your idea, I'm not really sure I'm tracking. Am I right thinking that you want the accelerator to cut when you deviate from more-or-less straight up and down the middle? |

No, not all all. (btw I played today, controls feel unchanged) What i'm talking about is eliminating acceleration that comes from simply turning directly left or right. If you do that without moving your joystick forward at all you'll notice that the vehicle will lunge forward by itself in order to turn left or right, this should be completely up to how far forward or back the driver has the stick when turning. That way acceleration when turning is completely controlled by the driver, otherwise how sharp you turn also makes you speed up when doing so.
Though if I had to suggest an overall control scheme i would suggest going the route of the warthog from Halo. Most people will just whine about it being a control scheme from a different game, but it works, so why not use it?
I do like the idea for the tank, but I would only be okay with a 2 man tank crew if tanks were significantly more powerful (or not as easy to kill by simply getting groups of mercs to go "anti-armor" fit) |

In the same vein of any other post regarding vehicle controls, this has my support as well. One stick controlling both acceleration and turning is a pretty frustrating exercise in poorly designed controls. I'm not sure I've seen this type in any other game, so short of just being a temporary, quickly and easily made scheme for beta testing purpouses, I don't expect it should last long into the beta.
Better control schemes imo:
Trigger operation- R2 accelerate L2 decelerate
Go where you look- right stick controls view and direction, right stick controls speed.
Button operation- X for gas, Square for brake, Triangle for look behind or some other usage, Right stick controls view. |
