You also have to keep in mind getting used to the game. I was HORRIBLE at Dust when I first started, but I've improved leaps and bounds, despite numerous SP wipes. I see a lot of the new guys making the same mistakes I did when I first started playing. It doesn't have anything to do with SP or gear, its just combat experience in the game itself.
We had a 12 day head start and 100k SP bonus for playing in those 12 days, but we also had PSN downtime to deal with, which many of use were unable to play and lost out on a chunk of SP, so the advantage is not insurmountable.
Also 25% is kind of the magic number for infantry stats. Armor and Shield HP can be increased by a max of 25%. Accuracy, Range, Reload Speed, Stamina, Powergrid, CPU, ect. can all only be increased by 25%, and in some cases that requires a month or more of training to increase one of those to the full 25%.
Weapons only get stronger by a factor of 5% a level, so at most they'll have a 10% base advantage over you (Unless they of course sacrifice shield defenses for damage modifiers, then it can be increased further). Also keep in mind that Militia weapons have very similar stats to Standard weapons. Usually same damage, accuracy, and range, but lower magazine capacity and reload speed.
Despite all this, I think the biggest difference is that the veterans have really learned the value of specialization. 90% of my corp has been assigned specific roles and skill plans thats they're training to make them the absolute best at a specific role, rather than a jack of all trades, master of none, which most new players do. Because of this, those who have specialized are going to stomp you very quickly if you engage them on there terms. This is a team game, not just in gameplay but in how you build your characters. I suggest you find a group that has players that compliment your playstyle so its easier to specialize and perform better.
