Are these "events" just flavor text to keep us up to speed on how we fit into EVE lore, or will there be something for us to do in game?

There was a battle between Guristas, which were played by CCP actors, and capsuleers loyal to the Caldari State over Vellaine III yesterday. My pilot is barely tolerated by Caldari and is liked by the Guristas so he couldn't engage the loyalists without CONCORD smacking him down so I just sat him there watching and looting.
If you've been paying attention the instant battles have moved from Luminaire to Vellaine III. Not that it matters any to us. |

Once DUST matures it'd be nice to see more storyline influence over our activities in game. The Quafe event was kind of interesting but CCP just doesn't have the tools built yet to allow their actors to do much to influence the feel or the events within the battle system. From what I've read they have more ability to do that in EVE, partially from the nature of the game and partially from tools they are working on. |

Over the next few months, the storyline of New Eden will be evolving in such a way that it effectively dovetails the two games together in one persistent, growing universe. There will be events in both DUST and EVE which will reflect this.
The two games are very much entwined, and are intrinsically linked via backstory already, but we still have a very strong focus on bringing them even closer together.
The vision is a single living, breathing, sci-fi universe, that can be viewed through two windows. These two windows are DUST and EVE, which provide two very different views of New Eden through which players can interact with one persistent universe.
In terms of events, the DUST team are working very hard to put together a solid experience for those players who are interacting with New Eden through DUST, and are collaborating very closely with the EVE Live Events team (which I lead) to make sure that things sync up and people have an awesome experience as we bring the two games closer together.
In EVE, we've nicknamed these kinds of ingame happenings "Live Events", and they've been running in various forms since EVE's early days with various breaks along the way.
We'd like to bring them to DUST too, and we'd love for every one of you to get involved and help in shaping New Eden's storyline. |

This is just the sort of thing that makes the game less about amassing SP and more about being part of a persistent universe where your actions matter.
It's exciting to "watch" in real time as the EVE characters first learn about the existence of DUST mercenaries (even though the players have been fully aware of us for years). It's a shame more DUST players haven't read "Templar One" and follow these news releases because it adds a lot to the experience. |

While this would be something for the DUST dev team to answer, it's something that I would love to see.
Right now, the EVE Live Events team are working to host bigger and better events, along with building the infrastructure to do so.
In the same respect, with DUST being in open beta, its very much a case of exploring options and possibilities for what can be done, and what you mercs down there on the ground would love to get involved with.
It's all a learning process, and personally I'm hoping that it's going to be both epic and enjoyable for everyone involved.
The possibilities are endless, and personally I'm looking forward to seeing just how epic of a storyline Immortal Mercs & Pilots are going to create together.

If you're going to read the books, I'd definitely recommend reading them in order :
1. The Empyrean Age 2. The Burning Life 3. Templar One
They give a good insight into the last 5 years of New Eden's backstory and will flesh things out up to current day events

Ccp loves live events, including huge events that happen in real time along with released fiction. As in by reading the eve novel you could read aboit events yet to happen in eve and be there in eve to be part of it. The end of the book was the event that launched the expansion. With video breaking news , and real change to the eve universe.
Expect dust to have epic live events and story lines that tie into eve and launch expansion features |

As is apparent from the news, the orbital part of the event had player involvement in EVE.
Was there a matching set of DUST matches with mercs on Vellaine III fighting a holding action while waiting for the extraction ships to make groundfall?
(I figure it's unlikely, and it would have to be "called" based on a normal match since there aren't any of those art assets or proper game mode in the program yet, but it doesn't hurt to ask.) |

SInce our starmaps are offline, something, anything in game on the DUST side would be nice. Even a mass email.
Do most mercs know where we are when we fight? Where their local system is located?
I've been fighting for the Guristas off and on, was interesting to see they were sponsoring instant battles. But again, something more on the DUST side, in game, would help to get people involved.
Was also wondering, will this live event mean that if we chose OMS Ambush that we can call in OBs from actual eve pilots participating in the battles above the planets? Something like that would be awesome.
But at the very least a few NPC propaganda emails in my merc's inbox would be be great. |

So, right now the instant battles are shifting around to reflect the unrest in New Eden. Every week or so, they'll shift to match up with live events. For this first Event in the uprising storyline, there was no representation in DUST other than mentions of mercenaries in the news.
However, there are plans in place to ensure that there will be physical DUST events that mercs will be able to involve themselves in. These will come in the form of rolling battles, set up in contract form by involved parties.
Initially we're going to test the waters with this type of thing, until we're comfortable enough to move on to larger things, pending player participation and available manpower and ingame assets.
Hope this answers your question |

I believe that we mercs need to start thinking of ourselves and marketing ourselves as not in conflict with our space faring bretheren but as descendants of a common anscestor to whom we more faithfully point back toward. Capsuleers and empyreans descended from planet dwelling men who emerged through the eve gate and colonized space. Many then grew too proud.
But the reality is, they didn't colonize the emptiness of space. They colonized the masses between the emptiness. We are the guardians of those footholds, safe havens, homeworlds, and rich bountiful lands. We are the children of the terran race who point toward a better future for all. We cannot let factuous bickering between empires degrade the progress that we have made.
We should rise up and remind the universe of the importance of the planets from which all living beings came. We are the land-dwelling guardians.

I've read all 3 books and this is very exciting stuff. game modes set up as contract types will really give this game depth and variety. it will also let us craft our own experiences. this sounds like an extraction game mode where you have to get the 'friendlies' out of a hot zone. if so you just added yourselves a bunch of new fans. skirmish and ambush variations can get bland really quick..but this? this could be EPIC.
can't wait for the PVE or PVP modes where our mercs can try to accept contracts on the lives of random CEOs, or prominent NPCs like Muryia Mordu, Empress Jamyl and maybe even Heth. hope you have some 'single life' no respawn game modes on tap. would really add to the suspense and excitement. |

can't wait for the PVE or PVP modes where our mercs can try to accept contracts on the lives of random CEOs, or prominent NPCs like Muryia Mordu, Empress Jamyl and maybe even Heth. hope you have some 'single life' no respawn game modes on tap. would really add to the suspense and excitement.
The new game modes are a very interesting suggestion. It'd be cool to see an extraction mode, or skirmish/ambush.
However, in terms of backstory, a single life event wouldn't make much sense for immortal clone soldiers

agree there. unless of course one mistake meant you woke up in your clone back on the war barge. [wink! ] while we know it can't be in the majority of game modes, maybe one single-death mode just for a change of pace? respawn dominates FPS and u guys are the one dev that takes chances and does something different.
either way these modes have us really excited! |

If there is no local CRU or mCRU, then it is single-life. Getting from Point A (grab-point) to Point B (extraction) within a time-frame, with little support and with no (m)CRUs handy ... could be fun. |

totally agree with that. would be really skill based too. say it was PVE: send a 4 man team of Seraphim Mercs in to snatch an NPC or assassinate one of these CEOs or politicians and see if they can deal with the guards, take out the target and then get out? in one life? if u got killed you would have to watch in the 'dead room' a la socom? would be exciting! |

u could do pvp as well. one side could accept the kill contract and the other could protect the npc. go with a time limit before the facility got locked down or something.
just make sure u dont show either side who accepts the contracts. 2 many people will be scared to go vs imps, pfb,si, lotis and other major corpz. |

OK WAIT. Whats going on? i must have missed something here because im not sure what all this means. Story line coming to DUST? Is that it? me confused.. |

Yes, the intricate and involved backstory of the EVE Universe is going to start playing out in DUST as well. Or, rather, DUST is going to be kicking in the EVE lore's front door and wrecking stuff up.

O.O The dream that we've all had... Envisioned by the Gods that called themselves CCP... Is finally on the point of being realized. The possibilities are endless! We could have news agencies reporting on this - I already know of the Immortal Mercenary press is on its way to being established. Plots could diverge, converge, and create.
As a writer, my mind is literally in meltdown right now. CCP, you took a while to get there, and one heck of a fright while we waited, but boy you got there, and you made up for it one hundred-fold!!! |
