Major Spoiler alert for those that haven't read Templar One yet in regards to Sleepers.
The Sleepers are really something else. Alot of the lore was explained in the latest novel Templar One. Think of them as Dark Jove(Kinda). Just how Khanid are Dark Amarrain. Just a faction on there own. It's been awhile since I read the book but I'll take a stab at what Sleepers are. From what I remember they created most of the star gates and tech the Jovian's are currently using. They were the one's that inhabited Curse region and the Sleepers were the ones that created that virus that almost destroyed the Jove race.
Now the remainder of Jove escaped Curse and made there way to the now occupied Jove space while a faction within "The Sleepers" exiled themselves to wormhole space. Once they settled, The Sleepers created a world within a dream (Very similar concept to The Matrix) Majority of the population went into status pods ((((( Refer to start of trailer at 0.57 when the 3 Caldari men find that pod http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIwekfp3p5Q ))))). While the rest plot to destroy. Currently the mighty Empress Jamyl Sarum I has a Sleeper insider her conciseness. If all the houses of Amarr were to find this out. The Empress would be trailed as a heretic and she and the Sarum family would be hunting sport for the entire Amarr empire.
The Sleepers you encounter in wormhole space are only drone guardians protecting their actual masters that are asleep. All Dust players are a result of Sleeper tech. (refer back to trailer I linked) Lucky for us though, its not the prototype tech that was discused in the noval other wise we would all be "sleeper" Sleeper agents waiting for them to delete our conciseness and take control of our body =P
If I stated anything incorrect please tell me. I am just going of memory here =)
When you speak pirates, do you mean the pirates npc that we encounter? Because if you are asking about them, where do I begin. They all have history. I could right up little bits of facts about them as I am very familiar with them all. But I don't want to write up a wall of text hahha =P
As for the Drones... I'm going to guess that a majority of the drones or Rogue Drones I should say are a result from after the Gallente/Caldri wars. There was an interesting theory that EvE players that also forget their drones and don't go back to pick them up are another result to the Rogue Drones numbers. |

I agree, and that's why I included links to the fiction portal. New Eden is an incredibly complex and multi layered place. There's no way to cover everything in one post, so I wanted to cover the things that every single person would know just from living there.

You're welcome. I hope you get into the fiction portal and read more. New Eden had a good story when EVE Online started, and now it's had almost 10 years to keep developing. |

This is a touche subject.
All docking stations are subject to attack by capsuleers. The ones that are, are owned by other capsuleer, not "NPC" docking station. Many stories (I'm talking about lore) have been told about attacks against docking stations but none of these involve capsuleers. |
