So there's a massive amount of back story in the fictional universe in which EVE Online and Dust 514 take place in. This is available at http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Portal:EVE_Fiction.
This post is an attempt at making a TL;DR version for those of you who want to understand the world you're playing in, but don't want to dig deep into the role playing universe. It is divided into two sections. First is a short background about the stuff you as a player may want to know, but your character would have no way of knowing. The second is all the stuff that your character would reasonably know about the world around him or her.
Stuff your character has no way of knowing The people of earth discover interstellar travel and all sorts of cool stuff, and settle all over the place. In AD 7987 a wormhole is discovered that leads to a place in some other galaxy, they call the place New Eden. Two years later they begin colonizing the place through this huge stargate they build on the wormhole. People split into all manner of groups in New Eden and colonize star systems by building "local" stargates. One day, the wormhole collapses. Shipments of supplies etc stop and many of the colonies perish. Society in New Eden sort of goes Dark Ages. Bunches of time passes and new societies are formed, having no contact with each other. In the turmoil, all this history is lost. More here.
The world history your character would know People in New Eden (re)discover space travel. They find a bunch of stargates built centuries ago and get all confused. They find the remnants of an ancient stargate with the letters "EVE" written on it. These are Amarr (they like God and stuff), Gallente/Caldari (these were from the same solar system) and Minmatar (tribals). The Amarrians figure that Minmatar make awesome slaves and enslave the entire race. The Minmatar aren't super happy about that and eventually rebel. Gallenteans like rights and democracy and presumably are all hippies. The Caldari like corporations and doing what you're told. The Gallente and Caldari split up and fight each other. The Gallenteans don't like the Amarr because of the whole slavery thing. The Caldari like the Amarr because the Amarr don't like the Gallenteans.
There's also a fifth race known as Jovians but anything you hear about them is a lie or rumor.
More about the states here. More about history after the Dark Ages here.
These states amass vast empires in space, controlling many solar systems and countless planets. The area made up by the states is known as "High sec". If a spaceship pilot commits a crime in high sec space, the cops will blow up his spaceship.
The border lands of high sec are called low sec, and are sort of like the wild west. Some of the low sec regions are engulfed in territorial wars between the states. Those wars are known as FW or "Factional Warfare". Other areas are just hives of scum and villainy. If a spaceship pilot commits a crime in low sec space, the cops will put stickers on his spaceship that let people know that pilot has been very naughty indeed. Low sec space and high sec space are usually both included in the collective term "Empire space", although this is sometimes used to describe high sec only.
Outside of Empire, there is nullsec space, also known as 0.0 space. Some areas of nullsec are controlled by non-player factions, but most are controlled by groups of spaceship pilots. They make the rules in nullsec. There are no crimes in nullsec according to the police. You could blast through the shields and armor of an unarmed freighter, tell him you'll let him go if he gives you 50 million ISK and sings you a Christmas song with all the references to "Christmas" changed to "Mittens", take the money, post a recording of the song on the forums, shoot the ship anyway, blow up his escape pod and use his frozen corpse as a hangar decoration, and nobody would even bat an eye.
More on non-player factions here.
Pod pilots So the one good thing to come out of Jovian space is the pod. It's basically an egg with goo inside that a pilot can float in. He can control an entire spaceship through a hose connected to his head. This replaces the entire bridge crew of a starship. Starships are still fricking huge and lots of people work aboard them. If the ship explodes, all those people die. The pilot just ejects with his pod though. If his pod explodes, his consciousness is downloaded into a waiting medical clone, instantly. Sucks to be the crew, I guess.
One effect of being immortal and flying around in ships the size of cities is that pod pilots are total dicks. Life is cheap or free and your problems mean nothing to them. This has made them both feared and revered by the people who don't spend their lives in eggs filled with goo. Think of them as rock stars who are really spoiled. But with lasers.
OK that about sums it up I think. There's tons more to be found at the fiction portal if you want to keep reading.
Oh, I almost forgot: TL;DR Amarr like God and lasers, enslaved Minmatar and don't like Gallente. Caldari like corporations and order, hate the Gallente and don't like Minmatar. Gallente like freedom and vegetables, hate the Caldari and don't like the Amarr. Minmatar like drums and spears, hate the Amarr and don't like the Caldari. All spaceship pilots are assholes. |

You skipped over alot of stuff, like the jove kicked the crap out of the amarr with as much effort as you would use to take out the trash.
This allowed the Minmitar to rebel.
The cops as you call them are Concord, and pertty much have the power to do anything, until the minmitar brought in a titan and blew the Main concord station to scrap.
These are all important bits that make the peices fit together
Also Concord doesn't have any authority on planets, so they can do nothing to Bunnies.
Yes, the idea of making a quick guide is to skip over a lot of stuff... |

I don't think I did.
I personally find this part of the story fascinating, and have visited the battlegrounds of Vak'Atioth personally to take in the sense of history. However, in the grand scheme of things it's just the Amarr naval forces having their asses handed to them, and not something that they would boast about. This is evidenced by the treatment of those involved on the field. The result of the battle, on a universal scale, were basically nil, except for the chances it provided for the Minmatar Rebellion to flourish. This was an inevitable course for history, as any disruption in the naval capacity of the Amarr Empire would have yielded the same result, just on a different day.
Make a case for why the battle of Vak'Atioth would be universally important or at least common knowledge to all the people of New Eden, and maybe I'll include it.

Well, yes, at least in Dust 514. But what made you think that? I tried to be as neutral as possible, did I fail?

I don't pass judgement. To some, this could be a compliment. Obviously, to the Caldari, it's not. |

They walk around outside their capsules when they want to tease you about sitting in couches. See, told you pod pilots were dicks...

I agree, and that's why I included links to the fiction portal. New Eden is an incredibly complex and multi layered place. There's no way to cover everything in one post, so I wanted to cover the things that every single person would know just from living there.

You're welcome. I hope you get into the fiction portal and read more. New Eden had a good story when EVE Online started, and now it's had almost 10 years to keep developing. |
