I've been wondering about the origins of the Dust universe; who are the people in the opening cinematic, what battles or wars are we seeing and hearing people talk about. Is that Jamyl Sarum? Why does she sound so reasonable at first and then starts screaming bloody murder. Anyone have a handy link or two? |

Because by killing everyone who Opposes the Amarr, noone else has to die. |

Tony Gonzales "Templar One" is kind of follow-up on his first book "The Empyrean Age". As having read both of those, would recommend starting with the "The Empyrean Age" to get the background of the Factional Warfare and the lead characters of the "Templar One".
Both books are the best EVE Universe sci-fi to current date. |

The nice lady in the video is Empress Jamyl Sarum of the Amarr Empire, the largest faction in New Eden.
She's kind of a big deal, viewed as an "Ambassador of God" by her people, and has more or less total authority over the Empire. It's hard not to be a little crazy when your people view you as the voice of God's will, but all things considered she means well. Probably.
More information on any topic or empire you care to look into can be found in the Fiction Portal for EVE Online, the shared universe that Dust takes place in.
If you're interested, you can read short stories about New Eden here.
Friendly warning: bring a floatation device. This is fiction that has been worked on together by a dedicated team of writers, fans, and fans who became dedicated writers. For ten years.

Bald man in the video is likely Mordu, leader of Mordu's Legion mercenaries who served as the neutral ground for technological development of the soldiers. |

Also, the reason Jamyl sounds reasonable and then batshit crazy is because she basically has a split personality problem. In very broad strokes, when the Amarr have a succession the candidates from all the great houses undergo the succession trials. The losers are expected to commit suicide. During her attempt at succession she lost.
She had herself cloned so that she would survive, but something went horribly wrong and now essentially has two personalities inside her fighting for control. The way the books describe it, it's a lot like being possessed. After this all happened she went into exile, but eventually became empress after returning to save the empire by destroying a minmatar fleet.

Wait a second...Eve books? You mean books inspired by Eve? Like..erm..books based on Eve universe?
IMO, Eve players make the history and I doubt those books cover any of the events that actually happened in New Eden. |

Like an actual book set in the EVE universe of New Eden, a real novel.

Actually Empyrean Age directly references events that happened in-game. I just learned this weekend that if you fly to a certain system you can look at the burning wreck of a station whose destruction was detailed in that book. GM event not player driven, but still part of the game. The guy who wrote the books was heavily involved in creating the lore. |

The events happened during deployment downtime of the Empyrean Age expansion. It was very nice to see the story developing further and further during a expansion deployment.
