As DUST University, like its sister corporation EVE University is a training corp, we thought it might be appropriate to have a thread here in the training room for members and non-members to discuss anything about Dust 514 they'd like and ask question about DUST University itself.
But first some brazen links:
EVE University DUST University Dust University on Facebook DUST University on Twitter DUST University Wiki Our Director of Operations twitter feed
We are currently in the process of providing a private discussion forum for our members but I feel a public forum would be a good idea for both Veterans of the closed beta and those newer players joining from the open beta to come together. |

Get weaponry up to V ASAP. With a complex damage amplifier and a bit of range I can chew through a heavy in one clip on average.
Also contrary to popular opinion, there is extra damage on upper body and head area. So aim high. |

Elitism is the very last thing we want.
If your idea of being in a corp is so that you can dominate and want to do nothing but win then we're not the corp for you.
That's not to say we don't have some good players. But our goal is to be a relaxed place to be, where people are willing to squad with new players and not worry about losing. A loss can be just as an important a lesson as winning, perhaps more so. We don't expect players to stick around either. If you feel after a short time with us that you've learned enough to strike out on your own, perhaps start your own corp, then we're happy to see you move on.
And no one should forget that this is a Beta. Dust in two years time will be much bigger and much more involved game than it is now. Industry, the marketplace, the ability to fire back at Eve player, deeper interaction with Eve and that's just the stuff that CCP have hinted at. Dust is going to be much more than just tactics and how to use team chat. CCP wouldn't make a game that DULL.
In fact, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if in two years you could have a successful Merc that doesn't even fire a shot.

Fox Gaden wrote:I posted this in the Recruitment Thread, but I think it would be more appropriate here. (It did bump the Recruitment Thread though...)
So I am new to Dust. Am I understanding correctly that I can join a squad of other DUST University members and then when I sign up for an Instant Battle the people in that squad will get assigned to the same battle? Or is it the squad commander that queGÇÖs up the squad? How does the mechanic work? How do I join a squad of other DUST University members? I saw about seven DUST University members on this morning when I was playing in the last hour before down time, but I was not sure how to go about playing with them, so I just signed up for an Instant Battle solo.
Thanks for the question Fox.
The squad mechanic is not the most elegant I've seen to be honest. Standing orders in D-UNI IS to X up in corp chat and ask to be invited to a squad or create your own and invite others who are asking in chat. However to invite someone to a squad you've created you first have to add them to your own contact list and send the invite from there. It would be much simpler to just high light an X'ed up player in Corp chat and invite them from there. It's a much requested feature that I'm sure will be added before launch.
Open up the chat channels by pressing Select, then using the d-pad highlight the chosen player and press X. A drop menu will appear with Add Contact as an option. Select it and press X. The player is now on your contact list.
To create a squad, press select again and highlight the squad box with the d-pad and press X. A drop menu with Create Squad should appear, press X and you've just created a squad. Using the d- pad again to open up the squad, you should find your self at the top position with three empty spaces. Highlight one and press X again and Invite Player will appear. Pressing X on this will call up your contact list. Highlight the list and select the player you want to invite and a cross should appear in the box next to their name. Press O to come out the list and then highlight send and press X.
The invite should then appear in their notifications where they can choose to reject or accept, the latter causing them to appear in your squad.
Should you be invited after X'ing up in Corp Chat, you will recieve a notification, which will flash briefly. Open up the chat menu with select, highlight notifications and press X and the notifications will open up. Select the invite and accept.
Once in the squad it is the Squad Leader who selects what battle to join and the squad will follow him in. This is the same for Skirmish, Ambush and Corp Contract battles. |

Oh I doubt that any of our 182 members would claim to be anything other than competent at best. I certainly wouldn't.
Our goal with DUST University is not to train you to be the best but to provide a relaxed place to get better, pass on what you've learned, have fun then move on to make your own way in New Eden should you wish. If being the best is what you want we happily point you to (in no particular order) Betamax, Zion TCD, Imperfects, What The French and many others.
We see the core Dust player as someone who is bored with COD and wants a different challenge. Who's tired of abuse screaming 13 year olds in their lug hole. Over time we want to build up a database of knowledge that's free to all to browse.
This is a long term project. Eve online is nearly 10 years old and EVE University has been in existence for 9 of them. At Fanfest 2023 when Dust celebrates its 10th anniversary, we want DUST University to be there too. |

In furthering the education of our members I arranged for G I A N T to meet us up for a couple of corp battles last and kick us silly on the battlefield.
Which they obliged to do spectacularly well.
Many thanks must go to Arunis Gen of G I A N T who kindly stayed and chatted to us in squad, for over an hour, about our performance and gave some really good advice to myself and some of the other members that fought.
I learned a lot, not only about tactics but also more about the corp UI in Dust which until I started running a corp of this size I didn't need to know. So a big thumbs up all round. |

Badwolf Jones wrote:From what I know about the Eve Uni in Eve Online, they run classes from learning the basics to advanced skills like surviving in WH space.
Have a few of questions:
1. Do you see the Dust Uni holding it's own training classes, if so, how do you perceive these being held, in game or through mumble & UVT? 2. Will you require guest lecturers (a vocal member from PFBHz perhaps?) to come forward and give classes on specialist fields etc? 3. Do you intend to have 'training' corp battles against other corps? 4. As I understand, many join E-Uni and stay for set period of time before moving on (graduating) join or start other corps, do you see this happening with the D-Uni. Do think it's members will remain long term? 5. The E-Uni is famous for remaining neutral with New Eden, therefore will the D-Uni be involved Faction Warfare and Null Sec warfare? 6. There is no six. 7. Has Kelduum got an alt in the corp and can I shoot him?
1. Yes, but we're awaiting forum integration so D-UNI members can use Mumble. I'd rather they didn't HAVE to pay to use a UVT in a chat room but the beauty of it is that those with a UVT can join the same class chat channel as mumble users are using in Eve and Dust and still hear a UVT equipped teacher and type questions in chat. That sort of sums up what we want to do.
2. Yes, once the technical backend stuff is done. See above.
3. Yes. I'm just trying to sort out other stuff at the moment and the hours I'm doing at work over the next few days is making that difficult. But I'm setting up corp battles from 18.15 GMT to 8.15 GMT every hour, everyday (if I forget one day I apologise in advance), so use the filter to find those corp battles and join them to play some D-UNI guys.
4. If players want to stay in DUST University, they are free to stay as long as they like. If a new player learns the basics from us and move on in a week, I'll still be happy and indeed delighted. Its what were here for.
5. Dust Corporations have no standings at the moment. Why would they? They're mercs that fight for anyone with the Isk. Should that mechanic change then we will try to remain neutral but for the foreseeable future, its a free for all. I personally hope CCP keep it like it is but who knows what they have coming...
What is this 'six' you speak of?
7. Kelduum has brought a PS3. He has an alt in DUST University. No I'm not telling you who it is but it's not difficult to spot.... |

Thats good advice there from Try Harder. Take note.
This is the sort of stuff we want posting on here, hints and tips that others can refer to.
It might not work for everyone, everyones style is different after all but if works for you and you think it will help, post away.
DUST University is not planning to go Hardcore. Our goal is to provide a relaxed environment to learn about a game that is only going to increase in complexity as time goes on.
We also want to introduce FPS players who are perhaps feeling a little jaded with the traditional FPS games currently out there, to a game that while in its infancy, has a background lore that has been over ten years in the making. A lore that has, in my opinion, the greatest gaming community on the planet.
I was a MASSIVE CoD fan. But after MW2 it was just getting repetitive and stale. Even Halo was getting dull.
I'm a console gamer. Always have been. Eve, other than CIV5, is the only game I play on a PC and I play it because I feel a part of something that sadly you don't find in console FPS, as much as I love them, and that something is community.
Now if I can be a part of bringing a quality FPS into that community and lore, I call that a win. If I turn into Headshot Doug doing it, well, thats a loss
