I posted this in the Recruitment Thread, but I think it would be more appropriate here. (It did bump the Recruitment Thread though...)
So I am new to Dust. Am I understanding correctly that I can join a squad of other DUST University members and then when I sign up for an Instant Battle the people in that squad will get assigned to the same battle? Or is it the squad commander that queGÇÖs up the squad? How does the mechanic work? How do I join a squad of other DUST University members? I saw about seven DUST University members on this morning when I was playing in the last hour before down time, but I was not sure how to go about playing with them, so I just signed up for an Instant Battle solo. |

0 Try Harder wrote:Why would anyone want to join a dust "training" corp run by people who don't play fps games? @.@ It's like me joining a corp in Eve to learn about Eve by Call of Duty players who have never played a MMO. edit: do you even have a presence in dust? I haven't seen any of you in battle, yet you keep making all these posts on forums about how to play. How can you teach others how to play when you spend more time on forums than playing the game
I assume that during the Bata the DUST University members will be working on learning the game themselves so that when Dust officially launches DUST University will be able to offer experienced guidance. In Bata I would expect DUST University to be attracting new players, EVE Vets, and people who like helping others, and offer an environment where we are all learning together. What I donGÇÖt expect to encounter in DUST University is a feeling of Elitism.
I am sure the idea of DUST University will attract the type of FPS vets who like to take Newbs under their wing and show them the ropes. I am sure that by launch DUST University will have plenty of experienced FPS instructors, as well as many EVE players who have played DUST since early closed Bata and have gained experience as the game developed.
Of course I am new to both Dust and DUST University, but this is my expectation going in.
Also, Goonswarm were not experienced EVE players when they joined EVE on mass, and look how that turned out. Granted, they never claimed to be a training corp, but it is an example of a group of people joining a game that was not familiar to them and quickly dominating. |

Thanks Kevall. I hope they simplify that before launch.
0 Try Harder, I think the thing you are missing here is that DUST University brings a tremendous amount of credibility from its association with EVE University. The people managing DUST University may not be top FPS players, but they will attract skilled FPS players who enjoy teaching others, because they have a level of credibility that no other Corporation in DUST will have. Unless of course, Agony Unleashed makes a Dust Corp, but then you probably donGÇÖt know who they are either.
I have never had any direct association with EVE University when playing EVE, but I have used their published material to learn how to setup my overview for PVP combat and learned many tips that made me a far more effective pilot.
Kevall Longstride is not claiming that DUST University is currently the best place to go to learn to play DUST. The Goal is for DUST University to become the best place for new players to go to learn to play Dust. It will take time to find good FPS players who want to teach. It will take time to learn what the best fittings are. It will take time to develop skill training plans to help new players quickly become effective in their chosen specialisation. It will take time to figure out what the most important things for a new player to learn are. But DUST University is a flag for those interested in teaching others to rally around. And DUST University is a corp that EVE vets will know is forgiving to newb mistakes and forgiving of the stumbles people take while learning.
In EVE, EVE University is dedicated to helping new players become competent in combat. They teach the basics, and they research their material to make sure they are not teaching bad habits. In EVE players who are experienced in combat and wont to learn from the best go to other sources, but I donGÇÖt hear anyone accusing EVE University of teaching bad habits. I expect DUST University will be the same once it gets going. It will teach what new players need to learn to become competent on the battlefield.
The current phase of EVE University though should be considered the drunken faculty retreat where people get to know each other and bat around ideas which may or may not eventually coalesce into curriculum.
EVE players are coming from a game that has been around for 10 years, so you must forgive us for taking a more long term view.
[Edit: Or what Kevall said He is so much more concise. ] |

Well, when you go to the root of these forums, you should see a DUST University section with General Discussion and Corporate announcements forums. We stuck all our guides and training material in the Corporate announcement forum if you want to brows through them. If you have any questions, ask them on the General Discussion forum in the DUST University section.
If this is the first time you have logged onto these forums since joining DUST University, there may be a delay of a few hours before you are able to see our Cooperate forums. |

GotanLoctar Sparta wrote:I am a Noob in all respects. Came over from Halo 4. I had one of my friends help me set my character up along with my suit and weapons. I have tried to go in and train my guy up. Not sure if I've done things the right way or not. My armor and shields suck and my primary weapon takes forever to kill anyone. I don't have a clue about nano hives and feel like a complete moron. I'm reading the forums and hopefully this will give some definition to what I'm supposed to be doing.
I went into leveling up and I thought trained my guy up. Spent some sp and isk on weapons and suit. I probably just wasted all the isk and sp. Noob mistake I guess. Is there a guide that can walk me through the entire process. Boneheads like me need to KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid. Any help would be appreciated. I take criticism well. Don't hold back. As a Halo 4 vet you are a step ahead of where I was when I started. I had never used a consol and had not played an FPS since Doom in 1993.
If your FPS experience makes you fairly competent at hitting your target, then skilling up your Weapon skills in the weapon of your choice early is recommenced as a strong offence can be a good defence (or a Dead merc canGÇÖt hurt you... unless he dropped a remote explosive..).
If you donGÇÖt have a lot of confidence in your aim, the first skills you should be going for are the Shield Upgrade and Armour Upgrade skills in the Dropsuit Upgrades section. These gives you 5% more Shields and Armour respectively. (Good to skill into early.)
If you want to add something to your fitting and you donGÇÖt have enough CPU or Power Grid, then level up the Electronics (CPU) and Engineering (Power Grid) skills as needed.
Equipment: Goes in an Equipment slot. 1 Equipment slot per suit, except for Logi suits which have anywhere from 2 to 4.
Hold R2 to access your Equipment wheel, select the Equipment with the Right joy stick. When you have the equipment out, press R1 (same as shooting) to deploy or use. (Nanite Injector is the exception to this.) Light tap on R2 will switch you back to your primary weapon.
Deployable Equipment: - Nano Hive: Gives people ammo if they are close. Higher level ones can heal too. - Drop Uplink: Dead mercs can respawn from your deployed Drop Uplink. - Remote Explosives: (Under Weapons skills, Explosives, Demolitions) Deploy using R1. Detonate using L1.
Nanite Injector: - Revives an unconscious merc. Do this by pressing the circle button when you are close to the body, before they bleed out. This is quite buggy at the moment.
Tools: - Repair tool: I have never used one, but I think you target a friendly and stay close to them to heal them. - Active Scanner: Point and shoot to actively scan a cone shaped area in front of you for enemy. Their dots will show up on your teamGÇÖs radar. |

Arikos Noren wrote:Hey all, I had an idea I wanted to run by the D-Uni heads of office. I would like to start a Basic Training unit for new players or players just starting on a new fitting they haven't played before. I served in the military and would like to transfer the tactics I learned and utilize in game to the newer players that don't really know how to function in a squad. I'd hit squad tactics and how they change depending on game type, map and what stage of the match we are in as well as how to utilize cover and work toegether. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks. It is a good idea, but you should probably post it in the DUST University private forum. D-Uni management would definitely see it there. It should be just below the Announcements section on the root forum index. This thread is in the public Rookie Training Grounds forum.
