Pro tips to the newbies regarding the two game modes:
Ambush - The spawns are random to the point of stupidity, so get together as soon as you can and stay together. A large group of players keeping each other alive and well stocked with ammo while killing everyone usually win the match. A smart player will have a Hacked Drop Uplink in their suit fitting for this mode, as it allows your teammates to avoid using the random spawn system and spawn in a safe place. Just make sure that the uplink is not being camped or fired upon, as it can be destroyed.
Skirmish - You want your team to have more control points than the enemy does, so make sure that you hack and defend the ones that you know your team can hold on to for a while. Note that a skirmish match can take a while to finish when both teams are semi-competent, so its quite possible to stage a surprise comeback later on. Hacked Drop Uplinks are also useful here, especially if they are deployed near a control point.
Here is some general advice for both modes:
CRUs - Clone Reanimation Units: essentially Drop Uplinks that are hack-able and have unlimited use, but much like its smaller counterpart, is quite vulnerable to firepower. When you see one of these babies without any enemies nearby, hack it for your team ASAP, as you would be giving them a free spawn point!
Supply Depots: For all of your ammo and refitting needs. Just stand near it and it will feed your guns with yummy ammo (nomnomnom) and give you new grenades to throw at stuff. Want to change to a different suit, or is your Killswitch just not working out for you? Well you can easily change your fittings and so forth via the Depot as well. Note that it has to be your team's Depot, so make sure that it was already hacked by your team before trying to use it. Just like the CRU, it can be destroyed, so take note of that.
Turret Installations: Large structures designed specifically to be a complete Turret Kitten to the enemy, use these to defend control points or to clear out enemy vehicles during an attack. They are hack-able and destructible, so make sure your team has many of these as required. :)
