So my idea with this thread is to get people's ideas and create the model FPS that the majority of players want. The devs can then use this to base their ideas off of. Or vice-verse.
First up, movement. At the moment, Dust 514 has a unique movement type. Not the best, but unique. It seems to be going for the arcade-y animations of general FPS games like Halo, or CoD, but then also tries to add in weight as in Killzone or Gears of War (TPS). What Dust needs is to lean one way or the other, and to get an imperfect balance. From my perspective, it needs slightly increased base movement speeds, increased turning speed, and a better GÇ£jumpGÇ¥ mechanism. I also think that characters should feel like the dropsuits they are, Heavies need to feel less clunky and more GÇ£HeavyGÇ¥, and overall fluidity needs work. As of now, IGÇÖd rate movement fluidity at a 6-7/10, and it needs to be at least 7.5 or 8 to work well.
Sound: Battlefield immersion is highly lacking. Sure, thereGÇÖs the music playing in the background, and whirring and shooting, but the missing thing is voices. In most FPS games or games overall, players cry out when shot, shouts are heard, explosions have distinct sounds, and players feel immersed and can feel the mood of a true battlefield. At the moment itGÇÖs at a 5/10 (when in a squad using mics) and needs to be at least 7/10 to be fully realized.
Please, feel free to add more constructively, and I'll try to update. |

I see what your saying.
I hate to go back to the eve model, but this is a game by CCP. Eve is successful because it didn't try to be like other games. It would have been very easy for eve to try to be WoW in space in order to grab people. But it didn't, it stood on its own legs.
I think Dust should do the same. Im concerned because Dust 514 seems to be pandering to MAG survivors and refugees from other games, who seemed to be attracted by dusts difference and yet are going out there way to tranform dust into a game they used to play and is now gone. Let dust rather try to stand on its own legs. The people who like it will stay, those who don't will leave.
So many cool concepts have been lost because the devs are trying to hard to keep the present vocal elements of the community happy, forgetting that eventually these people will leave anyway. Look at all the concepts that have been lost to this idea that 'simple makes for more customers':
Drop suit resistances have been simplified down to armour and shield only. The idea of meta levels on items with progression of power and defence have been flattened to the point where they are nothing more than semi interesting footnotes. CPU and PG management is apparently pointless. SP and skills have been flattened so that our limited beta battlefields are more noob friendly. Assault rifles have been nerfed and buffed in time with the fickle mood of the community.
Dust 514 is becoming increasingly shallower as a result of the persistent mewling on this forum. Could it be that Dust is a victim of its own price modelling, as a freemium game, CCP has to encourage people to play so goes out its way to make as many people happy as possible? |

Walking, running and rotation speeds are good enough. Jumps need tweaking.
What really needs attention is how terrain feels under you feet: - Uphill/downhill running should differ - Better sound of personal steps - Slightly better feel of walking (running is okay) - Better modeling of fall damage
and most importantly - FIX ON GETTING STUCK ON WALLS, SMALL ROCKS AND ESPECIALLY HILLSIDES!
(Mountain climbing can and should be difficult, but not the way it currently is. Won't list all that is bad here) |

1) Mag`s immersion and command structure 2) BF3 controls and physics 3) Killzone 3 melee 4) Planetside numbers but not holding my breath ha ha lets aim for a even 200. 5) Tribes2 deploy able computer control turrets and machines 6)Climates and night cycles 7) Reasons for owning territory past money and look i own it. More like minerals needed to make tanks, guns, and the ability to attack in the snow. 8) Having to transport players through NPC vehicles since no one wants to ever do anything but hover over a point and tell everyone to jump, bombing runs that you have to land to rearm , and resupply. Meaning someone has to do the flashlight holding job for the flight sim guys.
Basically i want to feel like a soldier in a huge army in a massive war and not in a sports arena fight death match that gets bet on. Yes i could join the army in real life , but really after playing a lot of FPS over the years the whole death thing doesnt work for me. |

This argument holds some water, but honestly is horribly abused by people.
There is a reason other games gather a wide audience and have been successful. Each game has its own uniqueness, but there are certain things that should just be commonly done for the better FPS experience.
Dust 514s uniqueness comes in being more role focused and costumized then other games, which it has excelled in thus far. But saying people should move away from certain FPS mechanics like balance between skills and low-high tier equipment is something that is inherrent for an FPS.
This argument is sometimes akin to "Hm, we want to make a car, but i dont want to follow conventional wisdom, lets do something really different... no brakes! Yes, lets put no brakes on the cars" fyi, there is a reason why brakes are common place.
The reason why there needs to be a balance with skills/equip is because this is NOT eve, in eve you actually do have a way to combat stronger ships/more skilled players.
Friends who you can call in to outnumber the enemy
Friends who you can call in that are equivilent or better skill then the aggressor
Something that cant happen as fundementally this game is NOT an MMO, it is an FPS, its constrained to a map and support is not obtainable outside that map, OBs just being a certain factor thats essentially only gifted to winning team, which if there were no checks or balances on skills and equipment (as some people would have it) would mean that only one team would get OBs.
Atm the balance is good for the most part, people in protos who are decent players can wreck even more skilled player in a lot of contexts. A mediocre in a proto shouldnt be complaining about how the proto is useless. The additional mods do a siginificant portion in boosting abilities without making it impossible for other people combat them, just takes more effort. As it should.
Only time i support this argument is when people are pushing for less customization or are trying to push less competitive elements of the game, which i feel is straying away from what would make CCPs FPS unique. |

TBH DUST should be EVE on the ground - hard and cruel and you need tactics to win
As it is it is nowhere near it and is very dumbed down now with everything being so close together and vehicles nonexistant or easy to kill |

How we travel across terrain needs to be fixed for sure. Hills especially but anything that has an incline is terribly hard to navigate. Sometimes when I try to jump over a static object that is lower than my toons knees, ill just jump straight in the air. Future soldiers that can't handle a single step without attempting a 13 foot vertical is messed up. Having a vault option where momentum isn't list would be nice |

Well, judging by the way that most of the "top" players post
Remove the HMG And forge guns, as well as Swarm Launchers. Also take out SMGs and pistols Remove shotguns, lasers, and mass drivers. Fix sniper rifles, then remove them. Take out flux, locus, and AV grenades. Remove dropships and LAVs from the game. Buff the breach assault rifle and put a scope on it. Take out logistics, heavy, and scout suits.
Ahhh....balance, according to "top" players, nothing but sweet sweet tanks and ARs |

For core FPS gameplay:
Better more stable frame rate. (here) Reloading animation needs to be synched with reloading completion. (here) Faster base speeds for walking, running, and reloading. (here) Decrease in fall damage, and height from which you receive fall damage. (here) New mechanics are needed to make gameplay really standout. Firing rest of your magazine while dying but unable to aim (here), sliding (here), or something else. |

I agree that the sound is lacking. Everything sounds kind of rubbery like effects were created on playground equipment.
But throwing in voice effects would be a terrible idea and could make what is a somewhat cheesy soundscape super cheesy. Last gasp, help my character is dying sound effects always wear thin in multiplayer when you hear the same crap over and over again. Eventually that breaks immersion. You can't help but process them as fake, or at the very least repetitive, not to mention
"We've taken the lead!" "Kill confirmed!"
We are the mercs. Sometimes we cry out when shot but mainly just curse. Also the dropsuit helmets look like they would muffle any actual involuntary expulsions of sound. So all you would hear is what you would pick up over comms anyways. Like, "Dang, I'm down, I'm down back at B. Need a res, need injector!"
Which is good enough for me. We are highly trained not to grunt and moan like a bunch of pre-schoolers. At least in battle. We save the crying out and shouting for the forums.
Or you could always join a role-playing corp and take it to the next level... |
