I have had a few characters to experiment during the beta, with the help of some comments here, and whatever the strategy I have found that is seems to be better to have many skills at 2 or 3 targeted than a handful at 5. Obviously, some prerequisites override this concern, but I generally think a blueberry would do better spreading things around in the beginning, being a little tougher and hit a little harder, rather than being it all.
Thoughts? Assuming this is true, what is the best opening for that 500k? |

I think it's different for players with different skill levels and play styles. Perhaps folks would be willing to share their experience. This is a great thread to do it. Please help new players by telling them a bit about yourself and how you would kickstart your game.
Skills: 5 is best, 1 is worst
- Quickness: If I see you I get off the first shot (5) GÇô I never get off the first shot (1)
- Accuracy: If I shoot it I kill it (5) GÇô If I shoot it it kills me (1)
- Dexterity: I don't even think about the controller (5) GÇô Where is the GÇ£XGÇ¥ button? (1)
- Awareness: I never get surprised on the battlefield (5) GÇô Where did THAT come from? (1)
Favorite Range: Pick a number 1: Hand to Hand 2: Close quarters GÇô shot gun or sub machinegun 3: Out to about 40 meters GÇô assault rifle 4: Mid range around 80 meters GÇô laser rifle range 5: Long Range GÇô sniper rifles 6: Give me a tank 7: Give me something to fly!
What is your preferred play style: Like CQC, support, whatever you say
What char type did you pick for your Merc? Assault, Heavy, Recon, Logistics
Where should a new player put their first 500,000 skill points? Skill GÇô Level GÇô why it's important to train first.
You can cut the next few lines out if you want.
Quickness: Accuracy: Dexterity: Awareness: Range: Play Style: Char type to start with: Skill --- Level --- Reason |

They aren't going to known everything about team play and character building that the current beta testers do. These are the skills they will be able to identify with. And then giving them skills progression so they can get started could be a bridge into the meat of the game.
There are plenty of other sources for emphasis on teaming, corporations and basic strategies. Many good ones in the stickys on this page. |

It does seem like a stock set of opening build suggestions would be nice for us to compile before the blueberries hit.
I tend to think the widespread advice on core skills (field mechanics, weaponry, combat engineering, circuitry, drop suit command, etc) is sound enough tht everyone should probably just dump the opener into those up to at least level 2. I will have to experiment with my suggestion then report back. |
