Heavies feel off to me. I play one (most likely poorly) and seem to die all the time to SMG's and Assault Rifles. Even in situations where I turn a corner, HMG spitting out bullets, and suprise 3 Assaults they turn and kill me in an instant before I can take even get one into low armor. Now I'm not asking for an 'I win' button, and this probably sounds like "Waa, I suck and cant kill people - fix it" and it probably is. But I just envisioned Heavies as the 'infantry tank' with the Minigun that mows down everything in front of it while being slow and extremely vulnerable to snipers / being flanked.
Idea
So I had an idea. What if Heavies were treated similar to Light Vehicles. Since that is essentially, lorewise, what they are. They would be extremely resilient to small arms fire (ARs, SMGs, Locus Grenades) but could be targeted by AV grenades and swarms.
Benefits
- This would make the heavy the infantry 'tank' many envision it to be.
- This would provide a hard counter to infantry (HMG + resilience to small arms fire)
- This would provide a hard counter to heavies (AV grenades + Swarms)
- This would provice more reasons to skill / use AV fits.
- This would justify the high ISK cost of heavy fits (the Proto B suit costs more than a tank)
- This fits within the Rock / Paper / Scissors balancing theme.
- This would cut down, some, on grenade spam. (People will fit more AV grenades to kill Heavies)
- This will match with the idea that Heavies are tanks (Any infantry can still OHK a Heavy, they just had to use an AV grenade)
Provisions
- Perhaps make Heavy fits cost even more to compendate (though they already are expensive)
- Perhaps make armor Heavies even slower.
- Perhaps make the damage resistance be gained X% per level of Amarr Heavy Dropsuit.
- Perhaps remove the Sidearm / Grenades from Heavy suits (Where does my HMG go when I throw a grenade?)
Final Thoughts
We are wearing Amarr Heavy dropsuits and no self respecting Amarrian is going to create a Heavy suit that can be taken down by basic anti infantry weapons. Amarr are slow, heavily armored, and resilient. Taking down a Heavy tanked Amarr Battleship in EVE requires many ships to focus fire it. Treat a Heavy like a Militia LAV (resist wise) on legs. Multiple people working together can kill it with ARs, but a single AR stands no chance and the player would need to use an AV grenade instead. |

I take it you're using the skinweave/milita? Get out of that and into the type-II as soon as possible.
Heavies are fine. |

i don't have a problem with heavies it's the zero spool up HMG with their speedy turn radius that gets me. |

Heavies are fine. And yea, anything other than the type-II is a deathwish unless you only plan to use the forge gun. |

Granted, that requires more SP, but even a type-II with only 25% more armor is so much better than the type-I. |

Heavies are fine. I am in a Type-I right now. Maybe that's the issue. I used to play Assault and it just seems like I'm still in an Assault suit, only MUCH slower.
Either way, like I said above my issues is most likely skill / gear related. Hopefully I'll figure this out.
Thanks ya'll.

Yea...the Type-1 heavy suit doesn't work at all for running an HMG. Even though it has more overall HP it has very low survivability due to the amount of time it takes to repair it. You're probably not going to survive 3 on 1 if the assault are any kind of decent if you go heads up. The type-II gives you some options as far as controlling the pace of battle, finding cover, recharging shields etc. while with the type-I your options are basically stand there and hope you can get them before they get you or run for cover and get shot in the back until you die.
Type-II heavy suit is honestly mandatory for running that HMG. |
