I see all of these posts and topics saying this gun is overpowered or that vehicle can't be killed, etc. I just don't understand how people can say this with so many factors in this game. If you use a militia AR you can tell how powerful your gun is by what skills you have, but you never know what the other guy has, really. Someone may put all there skill points into AR proficiencies, weaponary, light assualt capacity, sharpshooter, etc. Now to them there gun is over powered but to me who puts skills into logi things it's not. I just feel there are to many factors in this game to really know , what weapon you were killed by but also what skills were you killed by.
So I'm wondering how you can say a gun is overpowered with these factors at hand? |

Because if you look at the mass driver it takes 0 skill to really use. Its an ******* weapon, you dont have to hit your target to be effective. You know, like an assault rifle, or pistol, or laser rifle, or HMG, or submachine gun, or shotgun. 12k sp and youre ready to kill everything, but a tank. |

Now let's not get hasty in saying that it takes no skill to use. I am with you in that everyone and their mother seems to be picking up a mass driver these days and I also see what you're saying in that you don't have to hit your target in order to deal damage, but that's the point of it. It's supposed to be an area-affect weapon to use for crowd control. People don't use it in that role though; they toss on a nanohive and just rail shots at everyone they see. |

You don't know that X person has Y amount of health. Most people in this game do not have a base health like in other FPS's. So your assuming a base that you feel would be fair and then making your comparisons and contrasts off of that assumption. But what if you are just not putting your SP on the right defensive stats or not putting you SP on the right offensive ones.
How can anyone know this. |

Are you saying this from experience or observation?
I ask because I've never used one, but I have noticed some guys are just deadly with it, while others I can completely dance around and avoid getting hit. Seems to me that there is some skill involved. The blast radius is not nearly as big as one might think. |

I used it before the wipe and I can attest that the weapon is actually fairly difficult to use properly. If you use the assault version, your blast radius is significantly larger, but it lacks any real stopping power - the only way I could kill people was due to their own confusion because of the rapid grenade blasts and their own panic shooting. Anyone who took the time to aim at me and ignore my shots was able to kill me 90% of the time. On top of this, the standard version requires you to get almost a perfect hit to kill anyone, combined with the fact that the round arcs, it takes a lot of getting used to to actually hit anyone.
I think most of the complaining about Mass Drivers is from people who have died to lucky shots or simply panicked from the exploding grenades. If you actually try one, they are pretty simply, but hardly over powered or unstoppable killing machines. |

Personal experience, it was my toy before the wipe. Vastly easier to obtain kills. If you cant use it your hands are broken or you lack the basic skills to track trajectory. |

Based on the responses, I think some people probably have a natural skill with it, and others don't - similar to playing pool some people can visualize the geometry and other can't. |

yeah same with the laser. Some people are just really good at staying at 60m and keeping a laser on a moving target. A lot of time I can just stomp laser users. But there was this one guy who wiped our whole squad solo from range, 3 of us had mass drivers and he was in a scout suit. He didn't care that we should of won, he just ZAP ZAP ZAP and won. Maybe he had a suit with 2 complex damage mods, and an advanced laser. Because if we had the larger AOE gun and more skills maybe we would of won.
I agree with the op 100%.
The point is no matter what sp and isk you have spent, a really good player with a weapon is just a damn good player. As far as the rest goes you'll never know what they have fit or why they could win. In eve we get killmails, hopefully something similar will help in dust. |

I think the best way for a developer to determine if a weapon is overpowered, it to see if there is an unnaturally high percentage of players using it. Granted some weapons like the AR are going to be more used that say a mass driver or laser rifle since its more flexible, but I think its safe to say that if people start flocking to a certain weapon, its a good way to tell if it is overpowered. |
