I think jet packs are a great idea! I also think that they should be available on all dropsuits, and they will just be limited to an amount of boost versus the dropsuits mass. That way counting up in flight time and flight speed of dropsuits with jetpacks, the list should go: Heavy, Logistics, Assault, and Scout obviously at the top.
What I would do to keep the jet packs from being OP, would be a very limited flight time, somewhere around 6-8 seconds. Jet packs should either take up a high slot or an equipment slot, either way they should be passively active and would be activated simply by holding down x after a jump.
Weapons should still be usable while in jet pack flight but only in hipfire, a reduction in accuracy would accompany flight. Another possible way of reducing OP'ness would be to have the added weight of a jet pack reduce run and sprint speed slightly, 3%-5% possibly.
Operation of the jet pack should also include pushing the left stick to change direction of boost and having the option of not choosing a direction to gain strictly vertical boost. Having the ability to jump directly into jet pack flight will also change jet pack behavior, both by jumping in certain directions with momentum to increase flight speed and jumping up to increase climb rate.
Dropsuit types will affect flight as well, as scouts jump higher and sprint faster than other dropsuits more momentum/climb rate, can be achieved by activating the jet pack during a jump while sprinting. Inherently a faster momentum/climb rate, boost from the jet pack will be achieved on the scout dropsuit due to the lighter weight.
Having the jet pack equipped could also increase a dropsuits scan sprofile making them easier to spot on scanners. |

I should have mention in my post that having the jet pack equipped, would be an actually visible item on the back of the dropsuit, matching in color and style of dropsuit. In the case of heavies and logies, the backpack currently equipped would be changed to accomodate the jet pack, and the scouts and assault suits would have to have a jet pack backpack added to their dropsuit designs. |
