We have pagers?
Oh! That is what that is.
It was not a number I recognized.*
Sorry, had to pop out for a bit to meet with me chums.
On the phone with the wife.
Hear now, having a spot of dinner. Could use a bit of quiet.
They have an app for that. Here I'll start it. Oops, look at all those messages from Sunday. I wonder what happened?
Thought something big was on the telly because the client count dropped like a rock.
Feel free to add your own.
*I actually heard that one in real life. |

This is just me being snarky about the incredible lack of response by anybody related to CCP while their beloved Tranquility Server dumped Kitten Barf all over Dust and its Beta Testers.
Too subtle for ya?
How about this?
Hey, CCP That Was A Rotten Kitten Eating Lousy Job Of Paying Attention To Your Beta Testers On A Sunday!
Better now?
Inside computing server joke: long, long ago technicians used to have pagers to respond when something had, gasp, gone wrong on the server. Normally in off hours like evening or weekends. |

Lols I have to carry one of those dam things around im Lucky if I get a weekend off. So I agree poor show on ccps part however in sprit of the thread. Once in a 5 man team we left the pager on a table and once it went off we all just looked at it. Was funny to see 5 grown men cowering in fear over a small device knowing one of us was about to not get any sleep that night :-) |

Okay, before the days of the ubiquitous* smart phones. People, normally support personnel, carried around a little black box that was smaller than a package of cigarettes. It worked by magic, meaning I have no idea and probably radio, that it had a little teeny, tiny, poor, bad, miserable LCD display that could display ... maybe 40 characters. Some could only display A telephone number.
Now, this support person is a human, wasteful I know, and foolishly expected to Have A Life(tm) when they took the job. But, management figured out how to remove that life by sticking them with said pager. Whenever the pager went off**, the person would have to call the number back. On yet another device! Not even internet enabled! Dreadful. Tragedy.
Then a series of various arcane procedures would take place: logging into a server remotely or driving to the actual server and performing what ever needed to be done to get them Tubes flowing once again.
This Did Not Happen on Sunday it would seem to me. But, I am just guessing. And being snarky***.
Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pager
*means they are everywhere. **a message appeared on the miserable LCD display. ***how in the Kitten was snarky not in the dictionary? Hmph. Fixed that. |

No this is about doing the basic job of running any type of server in this modern yet very, very server intensive age.

Nope, not justified. It's not like they bought 10 year old server software off the shelf and installed it.

This is just snarking 101. CCP failed at their basic job. I am a customer. I can Snark. It is a consumer right.
FYI, CCP has a business based on servers. There are standard business practices associated with maintaining operational servers over a weekend. Ignoring a constant stream of protests, complaints and obvious server related problems is not acceptable in this type of business. Even if the primary product is a video game.
We are trying to hammer out the remaining issues of a Semi-Closed Beta prior to the Open Beta. Doing that with Zero company support wasted a significant amount of man (merc?) power and showed no recognition from CCP that it even cared about the efforts by so many that are primarily for the benefit of CCP and their bank balances.
And, so far, I see little innovation. Technically, none. I see the potential for innovation but none has been delivered to date.
I was in the computer business for three decades and this is not how you do it. If they don't know how to do it then they seriously need to learn. I thought, mistakenly, that they already knew how because CCP has run Eve Online for 9 years. 9 years and they make a rookie mistake like this. A simple posting would have eased this situation. A series of postings that directed the sub-forums to the announcement, "We have a problem. We do not have an ETA. Watch this space for resolution" would have been a lot. We got on response to one of dozens and dozens of complaints. Bad support practices, thy name is CCP.
TL;DR It is Monday afternoon GMT. We have one posting, you have to hunt for it.
CCP, do the basics, then deliver the promised innovation. That is all I am asking for. |

Right, and all of those virtual forms you signed when you first downloaded the game pretty much said: "We make no guarantees, so don't *****". You're complaining about server issues from a company that is combining two games into one with an EXORBITANT amount of data from both, right now to item codes and entire economic databases that span and entire virtual univ-
You know what, **** it, you're absolutely right. You could obviously do better and CCP should hire you right now.

Sorry even in beta and test phases u still say their is a problem so don't waste man hours chasing problems and red herrings. It's simple bad practice. But I can forgive if the alerting software failed to trigger which I can understand just after a migration |
