So, I've only been playing for about a day, browsing the forums, yadda yadda. So far, what I've seen is unique in certain ways (high-level customization, RPG-style skills) and very much the same in others (people very reasonably advising me to learn the maps).
The former is what I signed on for. The latter is very, very not.
I fully realize that DUST is in an early stage, so this is more about the future than the present. For now, I will be content to hone my skills and develop my character. But for that future....
I do not want "Battlefield" by another name, only with crafting and RPG elements. I do not want an even match, with "shields" and "structure" for my team's FAV functioning as a slow countdown of "points." I do not want to look on the field and see something well-worn and familiar.
I want to plan an assault on familiar, standardized structures on unfamiliar terrain. I want to plan that assault as though I were cracking Fort Knox. I want to watch the defenders setting static defenses a good five minutes before my boots hit the ground, knowing that the ideal-- wearing down their clone supplies or destroying their field command unit-- might not be achievable, but also knowing that, failing that, a few demolitions charges around the facility's reactor will produce an acceptable outcome where my client is concerned.
On the flip side, I want to lay down defensive kill zones in advance, knowing full well that the enemy only has to get through once to claim victory. I want to have real reason to grimace when orbital bombardment starts raining on a hardened position. I want to curse as I watch hostile troops solidifying their control over the complex, and to direct our team's demo expert to blow the charges we set on the main reactor ourselves, knowing that denying the invaders vital assets is more important than the facility's survival.
DUST 514 is an addition and expansion, functionally, of Eve Online, one of the most cutthroat, merciless games in existence and proud of it, a game in which a "fair fight" occurs when somebody makes a terrible mistake. The kind of matches we have been playing would work for Alliance Tournament-style organized fights, and might (MIGHT) be passable for faction warfare, but for nullsec control? Conquest of PI sites? It's hard to imagine Eve players, accustomed to hardened facilities and massive fleets, feeling comfortable leaving the fates of their holdings up to a more-or-less even fight on a battlefield everybody has memorized-- a "match" that has more in common with a sporting event than a battle.
And Eve has so much more to offer than a few terrestrial planets.
I want to watch something huge and living pass overhead in the depths of an ocean world, yell in surprise as a slaver dog drops on my face, see a teammate blasted off a walkway to plummet into the swirling, multicolored clouds below, and get sniped right through my visor by a sniper hidden in an alien forest. I want to drive a tank through a freaking plasma storm.
If that comes at the cost of having to fight the occasional battle that was over before it began, I say that's all to the good. Perhaps you can have an "arena mode," complete, at the high end, with seasons and televised viewing, for those who favor playing a sport over going to war. |

You gotta crawl before you can walk, walk before you can run. They need to iron out the wrinkles in the base of the gameplay before they can bring out any major changes/additions, otherwise people will be QQing about an FPS with broken game mechanics that just feels "tacked on" to EVE. Most (not all) players are going to be PS3 patriots and are used to triple A shooter mechanics, anything less will not hold their attention for long enough to ever consider buying an Aurum pack. I do understand what you're looking for but I'm willing to wait for them to get the various bugs, kinks, quirks and glitches out before they open up a few thousand planets for us to fight over. |

And somebody find out a way to get CCP to see this thread, because they really need to take this to heart. It just so happens that I have the email address for Hilmar Veigar P+¬tursson (CCP's President) and that he now has an email with a link to the OP. I have spoken to him in the past and he is an amazing person. I can only hope that his, and CCP's, goals for DUST match up with what the OP's vision. Because I, and many people I know, will pay serious bank to play that game.
And before anyone asks: No, I will not share his email address.

If I understand the initial vision for Dust correctly, this might be in the works, at least for battles over actual terrain.
I fully understand the idea behind making pub match instabattles balanced, but when you are actually battling over somebody's planetary interaction (PI) installation, the defender should have an advantage- provided they actually prepare effectively.
I also recall something about procedural maps, so hopefully as they iron out the bugs in that (I've seen some changes in the buildings, but not terrain yet), we will get that "I don't know this map" feeling more and more.

B and C can be surprisingly close from time to time.
Roads, sniper positions and the like don't change but the infrastructure certainly does. C is sometime below ground and others above.
The bad side of that is Defender Turret positions can be useless more times than not. Same for the Turret at C. Also some of the random building placements means entire buildings are just a waste. Nothing facing any useful direction or, my fav, no ladders going up to the platform.

Great ideas. I believe that they were in the original design directions for CCP and Dust514.
I suspect that recent reactionary* hot fixes have lost more than they have gained.
Having to learn maps is terrible for me as it does tend towards no more than a common broshooterdude Game in my view.
Procedurally generated should mean you cannot learn it. You have to go in and learn it now. Fight it now. Win or lose it now.
That however is not going on now.
Who knows if it ever will? Certainly not I.

I'm all but sure that this is going to be unfair in the future, and that's a good thing.
Picture it now - Being completely surrounded by an enemy force that's preventing any supplies from coming in.
Every fit will have become irreplaceable and you've got nowhere to run with well supplied ground forces knocking on your door, and a fleet raining fire down on you.

One it's not in early stages it's close to open beta so pretty far along,
You are playing a battle field game skirmish = conquest or didn't you notice the similar ring a roses play style.
It dosn't matter what planet your on you have 8 (i think) maps and thats what you get no matter where you are not even randomly generated maps just the same ones.
Only thing dust dose is you get to choose skills which some need to be just incorperated in to others, and you lose your stuff when you die, so it's not so unique.
Oh and the teams are still to small for these large scale epic battles that I was lead to believe I would be involved in |

Thank you for the excellent feedback.
What you describe is very close to our vision, and we are building towards this, step by step, and this kind of feedback is extremely encouraging so please keep it coming. We will be adding new features and mechanics during the coming months in preparation for this.
It will of course take us a while to realize the full vision and as you know, we are very committed to hardening the core shooter and persistent system aspects of the game before we introduce the more sandbox style in-match gameplay.
