When I am in my PS3's menu deciding what game I want to play, the two things that enter into my mind are entertainment and accomplishment. If a game accomplishes both of those I will probably play it. When I "beat" the game, I usually don't pick it up much anymore.
For example, when I hit max level and opened all the weapons on BF3, my playtime on that game winded down to nil. So with DUST514 there needs to be an incentive to keep playing. The SP system and acquiring skills accomplishes that. But at what entertainment value?
Is logging into DUST going to be a chore I have to perform everyday or is it going to be something I look forward to playing when I get home from work?
This is why I think CCP has their work cut out for them with the SP system. It needs to cater to so many player types it's VERY hard to get it right. A "perfect" SP system would make the HC gamer that plays 6-8hrs a day and the casual gamer happy with everything theyve accomplished on a dialy basis. Making it not only worthwhile to log in, but fun.
I have a great time grouping with my corp. mates, but in the end don't we also want to further out characters at the same time?
I feel for CCP since this will be one of the biggest questions they have to answer. EVE side players are used to a long character training (think months and years). The average FPS player isn't used to waiting months to further skills, which is going to be the retention challenge presented to CCP.
Figure i'll add in another idea besides the obvious.
1). If anything, this new SP system is a 100% marketing factor, mayking 1 & 3 day boosters worthless, so people will buy 7 days as it is more AUR efficient. As Cyn said, this is less total SP then our weekly cap is now. Before if we get 90% of out SP, we could usually hit lv4 or maybe 5 on a 2x multiplier skill. Now, you are looking per week to get to lv 3 of a 2x multiplier skill. This new system is to passive. FPS'ers usually want to see what they are doing having some worth. As it is, you are looking about 2-3 weeking to hit lv5 gun Operations; and close to 3 months for a proto suit (assuming my off top head cal'c are right). My opinion, that gun game, etc wont be the make or break; but SP system will. As it, i find this SP system will BREAK the game. It really becomes a chore to get on now; so can get your Sp & ISK (as who knows who else might actually be in game once TQ hits)
2). Pending on how the 1sec=5WP goes; if it is in a secondary active SP gain; players can go into a match go 0-1, get 0 WP now (which is a problem, that SP gain translates literally to abilities) but if the game lasts 15min then you still get 4.5k SP simply from being ingame playing |
