As I haven't seen one, I have decided to make a thread to discuss various snipping tactics and how snippers can be a force multiplier for their teams. Please keep posts constructive, not "OMG snipers r OP". And as much as we all may hate them, please refrain from posting about redline KD/R padding kittens who do nothing to help their team. They give us all a bad name.
First off, I would like to share my main fitting. I use a 'Valor' Scout Dropsuit, with a Militia Shield Extender BP, Militia Armor Repair BP, Militia CPU Extender BP, Militia Scrambler Pistol BP, Militia Repair Tool BP (I would run drop uplink, but I don't have enough CPU), Militia Locus Grenade BP, and Charge Snipper riffles. My skills are mostly aimed at making this fitting better (i.e. Snipper Operation IV and Scrambler Operation III). The reasons for the blueprints is that the only thing that this fitting costs is the charge snipper riffle, so I have no qualms about dying in the line of duty. My best match using this fitting was a skirmish, in which my KD/R was 18/0, and I had ~1600 war points.
When I use this fitting, I am able to sneak behind enemy lines to capture objectives, in addition to providing counter-snipper and recon for my squad/team. This, in my opinion, is the ideal way to use snipper fittings, as it is useful to the team.
So let's discuss. |

I use a logi suit load out - more armour & shields, and I get to carry droplink and nanohives on a Skinweave suit. loaded with basic profile dampeners, mil shield extender, mil basic grenade & charge sniper rifle (for the power of hit & low cost of rifle) |

I Use a assault type II DS, the base sniper rifle with a damage modifier, shield extenders, a Toxin SMG, nanohives, and a militia armor repair module. all the basic necessities for long range combat and reconnaissance. My priorities when sniping are (from top priority to least important) enemy snipers/campers, stragglers, cappers, medics, heavies, and grunts.
Tip#1 : whenever you are shooting from your hiding place and you are suddenly compromised?, fend off you attackers as best you can, and if you die or survive the encounter, make no attempt to return to that particular area, always assume that the enemy is the most patient bastard on earth. it will take some effort to find a new hiding place, but mostly its worth it.
Tip# 1.5: have a secondary weapon equipped in your sniper fitting. always keep it out until you either found a potential sniping position or you are moving in between nests. you will stand a better chance of surviving an encounter with a red dot or two if you are found.
Tip #2: If you see a red dot from far away, you have him in your sights but you worry that you might miss? Dont shoot unless you are confident that you will hit. you will save a few extra rounds of ammunition that way. Instead report it to your squad if they are nearby, they will take care of the rest. which lead me to number 3
Tip #3: Always maintain constant communication with your squad, if you decide to hang back and watch the world through the scope, by all means go ahead. but at least make an attempt to warn your squad of any future threats they might encounter from your line of sight. The old saying proves true : as a sniper, you are the eyes of your commander. rehearse simple , direct phrases for when spotting a red dot or possible courses of action.
Will post more tips when i have time

Yeah, I find myself often wishin I had a nanohive to help spawn in teammates. However, the Bp doesn't fit.. yet. When I get the skills, it is definitely going on.

Speaking of redline blueberries (complementary colours must attract them), I tried the complete opposite and went logibro sniper. Failed miserably. :( |

Failed miserably. :( I run Logi/Sniper, some Scout/Sniper and a cheap suit Assault/Sniper when the noobs are too disorganized. Of course, I also run a Militia HMG just to thin the Reds out from time to time.
Logi gives you two or three Equip Slots; Hive - Injector, Hive - Hive even - Armor Rep. Also Prof/Scan items in Low slots are nice. On my three slot I have run; Hive, Uplink, Explosive a time or two.
You have to be careful because of how slow they are. If you are running cover then making sure you get at least two spots to work from. I try not to stay in one for long, successful or not. Sometimes there is no choice. The blasted reds can be persistent when they really want that Null Cannon.
Scout/Sniper can be tricky. They are like paper.
Anyway, normal grain of salt suggested as my major focus is Logi then Sniper. Followed by whatever is needed at the moment, including AV, HMG, Forge or Gunner on whatever needs one. |

Yeah, as I said, I mainly use a scout snipper. They have room for improvement, and should have more dropsuit based perks (i.e. higher jumping, etc.). |

I just wanted to share a snipper perch that I have recently learned to love. At this map, to the left of A, the lower of the two hills is a great spot for providing cover fire towards B and C, and is able to defend A quite well. In addition, running and jumping off the top is high enough to use inertial dampeners, allowing you to land safely and escape if someone attacks you from A. Anyone else use this spot? |

At grid D3? (referring to the map) I might know where the spot is, i like it because it overlooks B and C, but its also becoming well known to the campers, had to pick off quite a few in the last few matches i used a sniper fit.

Huh, i learned something new today. never thought of using that place, you'd think with all the mayhem between C and A, that place would be a nightmare waiting to happen. glad to know someone found their hunting grounds haha. my spot would be on the side of the mountains just north-east of the supply depot in grid D5. there's a small, slanted ledge i hide behind so that i wont be popped by snipers from B5 and from stragglers from A |

@Hunter Junko and @Dominus Fatali. Thanks to both of you. Since one doesn't get to pick the map it will have to pop up for me to test. I have used to the East of A but it is troubled by the Red Line and can only cover A and C. Although not perfectly. If the squad is busy contesting or holding B than A and C need support as a single Red in a LAV usually gets all WP crazy. If I pick them off then I don't have to get a LAV and repeat their path.
I spend most of my time doing Logi but sometimes using my Sniper Proficiency is best for keeping their MCC under the hammer. |

Before the reset I played a Heavy sniper, running the Kaalakiota (most expensive sniper, its a tactical), Skinweave heavy, damage mods, 'Six kin' SMG, no grenades (what sniper needs them?!) and either profile dampeners or armour rep. I typically went with assaults or spots where people place nanohives (as well as having ammo capacity skill). The Heavy suit meant unless headshotted that I would stay alive after several shots, as well as making the SMG worthwhile. My skills for it were sniper OP 5 Prof 4, Weap 5 (Those 3 are ESSENTIAL by giving maxed out little sway and 30% increase damage output). I also had sidearm sharpshooter and various CPU skills, as well as SMG operation. These arent essential, just makes life easier. I remember though someone saying bullets having damage drop-off, so I wasnt sure whether to get light weapon sharpshooter or not. Can anyone confirm this useful for snipers? |

i know you and your fatboy-fitting, i almost tagged you a few times D:< Lol all jokes aside though , no. as far as i know, Light weapon sharpshooter dosent have damage drop-off. simply increases the maximum effective range for any Light weapon ( AR's, Sniper Rifles, and I'd hate to admit it, but lasers as well.) |

The majority of the snipers I've run into aren't very aware of what's going on around them. This is only three days of experience talking, but playing as a sniper with a fair bit of paranoia comes in handy. If you think someone is watching you, there's probably someone lining up a shot. Having one side against cover, keeping a clear view of the objective, spawn points, and hills/roof tops has been serving me well. I look around thinking "if I were an enemy sniper, where would I be?" and sure enough, I see a little head pop out from behind a hill like a slow game of long distance whack-a-mole. Unless they are on the other side of the map and my shot is off by a few pixels and their buddies see it and track me down, I've been able to get between 8 and 10 kills before I have to move on.
Make no mistake, there are no delusions as to my skill. 90% of my successful shots are flukes. |

... And if you think im joking... im really not! I don't think you're kidding! I am pretty sure you were trying to Forge me just recently. Missed. Nyah. You certainly keep me honest though.
I operate two ways in Sniper mode. One is from a particular perch or series of perches/nests. Watch the objective and defend the ones we captured. Some days I can defend two objectives all by myself. In particular if the entire battle seems to be focused at B on Manus Peak for example. Second is reducing clone count. Picking off the Logi, the Red too far from help, already down half armor. I don't mind only getting +25 if the counter goes down. Stopping the Heavy HMG or Forge Gunner so my Blues don't get overwhelmed by them. Counter sniping is included in both I suppose. As is stopping Reds that are crossing open terrain.
I will try carrying the rifle with me but so far I am terrible with hip firing that sucker. I can do better with a tactical AR but this character doesn't have access to them and I cannot afford the SP. I will definitely try it with my Enforcer.
I did get a +75 Assisted Kill nailing a Drop Ship today. It was a nearly perfect experience. They were being really disruptive and had taken missile shots at me, thank god missiles are so broken. I put two or three rounds into their side and it reacted all crazy like they do and never came up again. Then the message showed up. Sweet!
