I have taken some time off, and came back to the new "handgun" type iron sights for my assault rifle.
First let me say that I like the idea of iron sights, and if the big and bulky sights that are obscuring most of my field of view were changed out for something more realistic for a shoulder fired rifle, you would be heading in the right direction.
I have to agree with many of the posters on this thread.
1. Yes, Iron sights are a must, they work when batteries or your optics otherwise fail, so please keep the iron sights, but... 2. The iron sights are pistol type sights that take up WAY too much of your field of view, thereby obstructing your visual cone. 3. Yes, the iron sights should be made much smaller as the previous given examples (links) show. One needs a large field of view to be able to fight effectively and crowding your cone of vision with big bulky close in iron sights is a drawback. 3. As a previous poster mentioned, we should have the ability to at least customize the sights to our wishes. If someone wants a large high-power sight on his assault rifle, not a problem... he will pay for any close in shooting by the magnification penalty which could not only be the natural penalty of being too closely zoomed in, a speed penalty for presenting the rifle could be added to balance the additional accuracy. 4. In 2013, I can purchase an Aimpoint $700 micro T1 to put on my iron sighted AR15 that has collapsible spring loaded "pop up" sights that I have co-witnessed. I hate to think that this far into the future (in a relatively free trade market that Eve Online is) that such attachments/enhancements would be unavailable to those who can afford what they want, especially at the price of some of the other accessories and modules that we can already purchase.
Also, since we are talking about modifications to the sighting system of the game, I would like to add that having day/night, and then allowing attachments like lights or night vision to our visors as a module would be a great bonus for those of us that like a little more realism and challenge in the game.

I don't have any problems with the current model though, it seems fine.
The fact that you love the current model is great, honest, I am glad you like them, I like the idea of having the option as well.
My point here is that there are many of us who don't like the big bulky sights (for all the aforementioned reasons) and I think that having the option to fit different sights (iron, magnifying, or holographic) on your rifle would be the appropriate thing to do. These new sights could have their own drawbacks and penalties to balance them.
Today as a civilian in America you have a virtual cornucopia of sights you can fit to your firearm (handgun, rifle, shotgun, sub-gun), and I tend to believe that in a future society where there is a free market (relatively speaking) and the state no longer holds the monopoly on violence, I can't imagine that individuals would be limited their our choice of accessories. |
