In dust, snipers can be a determining factor in any battle; good cover fire, over watch, and defense can turn the tide of a battle in your favor. This guide is designed to help you become the marksman you envisioned yourself as. This guide four four parts: making a sniper fitting, staying aware, getting in position, and pulling the trigger.
Part 1, making a sniper fitting----------------- Snipers need to be fast, agile, and stealthy; therefor a scout drop suit is best for the role. As modules go i recommend a shield charger and a profile dampener, these will help you avoid detection and survive long enough to escape if you are. For equipment, it is almost a requirement to have a nano hive, it does not have to be a good one (a militia tier nano hive is good enough). The nano hive will re supply your ammo when you run low, this is a necessity when you plan to snipe for a long duration of time. Next comes choosing the sniper, while the militia sniper is ok it will not hold its own against anything but militia drop suits, so you should buy an upgraded sniper. I recommend the charge, tactical, or (my personal favorite) the far sight sniper. The tactical sniper is a low damage sniper with a high zoom, making it good for engagements at a long distance. The charge sniper is like a railgun, it needs to be charged before firing; it can either shoot fast, low damage shots or slow, high damage shots. The farsight is an AUR weapon that deals the same damage as a fully charged shot from the charge sniper.
Part 2, Getting in position----------------------- choosing a good vantage point is crucial in being effective and staying alive. Your position could either get you killed and obscure your vision or it could cover you and provide clear shots. No matter what you choose, one thing that stands above all else is NEVER try to quick scope. the barrel sway in dust is so substantial st first that getting a hit at close range is near impossible. even if you manage to get a hit, it wont be a one shot kill, so quick scoping is utterly ineffective. Now lets talk about finding a good vantage point, when sniping you should only focus on one task at a time. The vantage point should give you a clear view of your objective and provide cover from enemies. As cover goes, you should choose a spot that covers you from areas your not watching, aka to your sides. you should not snipe from buildings in the middle of the action, or the pipes on line harvest. Next you should drop your nano hive in an area with full cover and is easily defensible. Also dont snipe where there is more than one other sniper, it is early to find you that way. One thing to avoid is cover which impedes your movement, counter snipers will shoot and if they miss you will need to vanish before they can ready another shot.
Part 3, staying aware---------------------------- Awareness is a factor that defines a good sniper. While you should not quick scope you should not look down your sights all the time. My strategy is to stay out of your sights until l spot enemies and then scope in, this keeps you aware of your surroundings and increases your chance of spotting enemies. One mistake i see many snipers making is that they don't check for counter snipers, you never know if your in someone's cross hair. During times when you are not shooting at infantry, you should scan high buildings and cliff sides where snipers may be hiding. Should you take a hit or hear a shot whistle past, you should run, not fight. This is where the high mobility vantage points come into play, run to a covered area and find another vantage point. Also, even though this seems like common knowledge, leave if you see a teammate get killed.
Part four, taking the shot---------------------- The most important part of being a sniper is shooting your enemies. While stationary targets are easy to kill, you will mostly encounter moving targets. getting head shots is difficult because of the current lag and the hit boxes, so aim for the body unless you are shooting a close range stationary opponent. for most drop suits, it takes one to two hits to kill ( heavies can require four or more), so make sure that the enemies are not near cover, giving you the time to fire another shot. When the target is moving i advise positioning your cross hair in an area where they are running. Drag the cross hair in front of them, then stop and fire when you think the time is right. Never shoot at targets when your within their range. Also never shoot at snipers who are near cover and looking in your direction, they will return fire and expose your position. Lastly you need to prioritize your targets here is a good order to follow; : 1'st enemies at your objective, 2'nd other snipers, 3'rd medics, 4'th heavies with large guns, and last you should target assault grunts.
I hope this helps you in your career as a marksman,
Untill next time, Nix Zaroch |

Don't forget to crouch too. Reduces sway greatly.
And I find when a group of enemies blunder through my sights, or when I spot multiple enemies before I scope in, I get confused as to who to aim, so this prioritising thing sounds useful. I'll try it out next time I ditch my logibro duties.
I also find it better to aim for targets heading for or already engaged with your team. They're too distracted to see you or even know you shot them until they're down. And when they're headed for objectives they don't exactly strafe; that want to hack and they want to hack fast. I've seen some who run straight, undeterred by my fire, until I kill them, cause they're so set on getting to that null cannon.
The downside to that is if I focus on those whose attention is not on me, then I leave alive those whose attention is. I pay the price, literally. Sniper rifles are expensive.

AV infantry should have higher priority if your team is fielding tanks or dropships(swarms tend to like the same places as snipers for perches, so I look for both at the same time).
You should be pointing out enemy locations if you and your team have their mics on(this is the difference between a bad sniper and a good sniper regardless of kills unless you are playing as a squad support ground sniper).
Here's a simple one that very few snipers actually follow and will save you more than you would think: move out of view when you reload - if you're not there when a counter sniper is scanning perches then you won't be seen and if you are you will not be in the exact same location when you go back. You will also be more aware of your surroundings when you do this and a well placed grenade or two will solve any immediate problems and allow you to get to another location. |

Nice good tuto, as a survivor u need to have this skills in your soul, but some noobs will soon become snipers pros, soon the campers will be a real threat. Camping isn't my area since I like to move around helping my team, but it's nice to know how to do it if I need to cover my team in skirmish battles. |

Nice post Zaroch,
I'd like to add something informative here, but i can't because i'm a terrible sniper.
To all snipers that learn something from Zaroch's post here, please stop shooting at me. I haven't done anything to you and i promise if you leave me alone i will not hunt you down. (That was a joke)

I was playing once as a sniper in a scout suit and ran across a friendly and an enemy facing each other not shooting, not reloading, not moving... nothing. I figured they were friends or something that were thrown on opposite teams. They both looked at me but didn't fire, we all stared at each other for 10-20 seconds, so I left them alone and moved on. A few seconds later the red shot me in the back and killed me. Moral of the story: I learned my lesson and if your a red dot Imma gunna shoot at you. |

Psychology: Lets face it, snipers will be hated with a burning fiery passion. It comes with the territory. Don't think its just a bad rep, the campers racking up the kills was never the reason why the sniper role is hated upon; it only added fuel to the inferno. A good sniper is able to hold down the enemy from his or her position with little effort. If they try to fight back it is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. A good sniper is literally a ghost.
moving on, we may be immortal but the perishable things in our dust life are what we hold sentimental value towards. that gun you've liked for a long time? same rule applies. even that bad-ass fitting you've put together? doesn't matter.
Picture this, your moving on towards the the objective, your feeling pretty good about yourself, MCC is taking little damage then... BOOM! shields are gone, half your armor is taken out. best part about it? you don't know where it came from. sure an arrow points out where the damage was but that's just in the general direction. in the back of your head you panic, you start to run, bunny hopping, to find a place to bunker down, get your shields back up but its too late, in the middle of your second jump a second shot rings out, BOOM your dead. sound familiar? Now imagine a team of snipers doing their job. Let that sink in for a while.
4 snipers, 25 rounds per sniper, 10 kills at minimum per sniper times 4 equals 40 kills and double that in kill assists. that equals 120 kills by a sniper/sniper assists. that's easily 4/5ths of a total clone count per game, should the blueberries capitalize on that advantage.
That, is why we have a bad rep. |

After capping the objective, another sniper takes you out, or attempts to but yet again fails miserably. Both snipers now stare at the recently capped objective, but make absolutely no effort to recap it even though no enemies are around. Within minutes, the team with all the red-line snipers controls no objectives.

^U Mad? >:] sounds like that happened to you Lol I kidd, I kidd
but honestly, some of us know that they are not equipped for close range combat, with only a pistol or an SMG for self defense in the even that someone manages to suprise attack us. lets not forget to mention that some sniper's fittings are paper thin, thus making us extremely squishy. doesn't stop some of us though.
if it were me I'd inform my squad that someone is capping an objective, they would make the effort to try and take it back, while i provide long-range support, alerting them of enemies heading their way, while thinning the herd.
Safe hunting,

Well Junko,
Politically speaking your offering only a skimmed view of sniping under a very controlled circumstance. The fact of the matter that every players experience with snipers is circumstantial but can be summed up in average.
Bad Snipers are a waste of space for allies. Good Snipers are an annoyance for the enemy. Great Snipers are a force to be reckoned with.
Now i don't know you very well. You may only Snipe. I'll ask this question all the same. Have you ever been in a team that was comprised or attacking an enemy team consisting primarily of snipers (i'm talking about 1/3 ratio) because I have. Most people know this, but i EXCLUSIVELY run as a Logibro without exception (minus two games where i rolled as a heavy for teaching purposes). Anything at the NT-511 Level or higher can Snipe my Cheap fit in one body shot and my most expensive fit in 1 Headshot.
Having 1/3 of the enemy comprise of snipers is extremely frustrating because I kept getting killed off by many different places. However, we won that match with relative ease. This is my opinion why:
Lack of communication for one. The best way to use that many snipers is to form a grid. If you don't do that what happens is that all the snipers kinda huddle together facing one direction looking for the same targets and start competing with each other for +50 WP.
Counter Sniping. As mentioned above the competition between many snipers for kills will lead to them taking risks and being counter sniped due to tunnel vision.
Lack of ground support. Snipers don't get up close and personal which means that there are going to be some objectives they can't protect unless the enemy doesn't have a clue that they're around. This usually means that allied Ground Troops will be overrun by enemy forces which makes the capturing of Objectives easy.
Snipers can be easily avoided. Honestly it's not that hard. If you want to know a weapons weakness then use that weapon for a couple games i say. Snipers have a very fine line they shoot in which means as soon as your out of their scope they can't hit you and there are numerous obstacles the enemy can use to exploit that. The only place Sniper was every extremely prevailing was Manus Peak and, to a slightly less degree, New Manus Peak.
^ This ^
Is what i see in most games when there are an abundance of snipers in a game. They are not useful but you don't need 6 of them when 2-3 could do the same job. There is such a thing as excess and because of the one track mind most, not all, snipers have they end up just not caring about whether or not their Team wins or Loses, and even if they are they still don't try to get their hands dirty due to the limited CQC that a Sniper has.
THAT is why snipers are hated.
(PS: Let this post be a lesson on what not to do as a sniper.)

I agree on all points, and i actually would say thanks for bringing it up. im semi-dedicated to a sniper fitting, but i might try going logi-bro first get that up before i grab the sniper rifle.
but to answer your question: yes i've been on a team with 1/3rd of snipers once, we lost easily but my squad and I were at the top of the charts.
Here's my way:
I never huddle up with a group of snipers and start competing for WP. Im a lone wolf when I snipe, but my priority is towards my squad and the people around them. no one else. if they decide to defend B till the last man, i'll be sure to thin out the herd as much as i can. If they make a dash for C although they are going to run into a large blaster installation? i'll throw myself out there as bait to distract or if im close by, i'll try to eliminate the gunner. if we are losing badly and they make a suicide charge towards any objective, then i'll drop the sniper rifle and use the AR
Thats my answer.
Good Hunting.
P.S: if we ever squad up, i'll be sure to keep an eye out
