Hey fellow mercs.
I am currently trying to figure out this whole dropship thing, I am a big fan of flying but i am finding it super difficult to afford to do this. its a job nobody really seems to take and yet it is the most expensive one and doesnt compensate at all. I kinda wish there was an insurance style thing like in eve.
Anywho I know this is still beta and what not but I just want to get some help from fellow mercs on which way to go.
My last game I set up my gorgon with as much armor and shields as i can stuff into its little trunk. Im flying around dodging swarm missiles landing in my safe zone to heal, repeat. about 5 minitues in One shot while making a turn. still said i had quarter armour, i hit the armour repair, but i was burnign and went down.
So i quickly by another and say hmmm, lucky shot. I make sure to keep my speed up and start making my rounds again. 30 seconds in. forge gun to the groin.
so i say **** this. go to the back of the lvl, call another dropship with the idea of just practising in the safe zone to try to get even better at flying. and I mean as far in the back as you can go behind my buildings. 40 seconds
forge gun
So this is my frustration, it seems to be soooo easy to take down the most expensive thing. but hey maybe i suck at it.
so should i be going Myron with shield tanking? or can you use the gallente ships and armour tank?
should i be waiting until i can afford the better ones so they dont die so quick?
am i not understanding a fundemental part of flying? I thought it was supposed to take skill to shoot these down with a forge gun.
Love the game, would really like some help.
Last question, what are the best weapons to have on the drop ships?

Man ... you miss your role about month...
After missile 'nerf' and common knowledge how to take dropship down... you got hard time. Dropship in 'big picture' are only fast taxi. And it is the way that dropships are now. Month ago dropships are like gunships going 60:0.
I have hope that this help you. |

dropships are useless since the missile nerf and peope barely use them anymore.
when i see a dropship it never survives, i grab my forge gun or if i am in my sagaris i will one shot you. btw flying dropships is not the most expensive, i believe that tanking is the most expensive job. just 1 hav fit for me is 2.3m isk |

Since missiles were the only viable weapon for the DS and now missible are only effective against LAVs and installations, we pilots don't fly much until they release a fix . CCP has said they are working on more ways for a DS to get points but that will most likely not be out till January 2013. Another reason your having trouble is that the game has not been reset for 2 months, thus many of the vets in dust all have proto level forge guns, these will one hit any low level ships, so work on upping shield management, mechanics and adding in armor and shielding.
For learning to fly, I would suggest going with Line Harvest Map (4 points) as it has plenty of space in the back that you can fly to. DS have a larger red zone so you can fly to the outer edges out of the range of forges and swarms. Just be sure to fly low enough behind mountains or out far enough, depending on what side you are. A tip for flying a DS is to treat it as a helicopter. |

I strongly suggest the spawn area of Manus Peak in Skirmish mode. It is the safest for dropships by far.
My Dropship Flight School thread might help.
Practice now because we just might get paid for flying next build. |

I've been a dropship pilot in every build except for this one. Dropships only exist to be destroyed now. They actually have no tactical value outside of reducing the size of your wallet. Dropships are 100% useless against all but the dumbest of players.
It's quite sad, really. |

Dropships are not entirely useless. It's that people keep using them the wrong way which is why you see a bunch of dropships falling out of the sky recently.
The dropships are meant for transporting personnel deep within enemy lines so that they can put drop uplinks and wreak havoc. They are not meant to be flying tanks. |

So what you're saying is they're an expensive LAV with no actual useful qualities. Nice one. |

Honestly deposits in the full release will only be LAV in the air. They are transport vehicles. If you wanna kill stuff we have to wait for the fighters and actual gunships. But also. Maybe it's because you are new but it usually takes about 3 shots with my forge to take down a dropship. It's not proto but still |

How is it usiing it wrong, when the only way to get WP is for your gunner to get kills? I use a M-CRU on my dropship, people spawn on it, drop out and I get 0 WP. Is that the way DSs work, by giving the pilot no reward.
So ya the DSs were used the right way, the only way to get WP. Now they are floating coffins and no existing, cause any pilot that is worth his salt ain't bringing in one till they can defend themselves and get WP for its other abilities. |

You know I don't even want a defensive weapon. I just want to be able to have people spawn in my Dropship, get points from that, fly off towards an objective and not get gunned down by a single forge gunner in less than a full clip, ya know? I wouldn't mind taking a more passive role if i didn't get smashed so easily.

True weapons aren't need, appreciated, but not needed. But counter measures are also defensive and those we need, plus a lil more shields and armor. |

CCP Blam! stated in his Dev blog that dropships were his favorite vehicle, but you wouldn't suspect that based on the Codex build. Nerfed handling, rediculous ceiling, ineffective chassis mods, and a lack of effective propulsion mods combined with the missile nerf put pilots out of the poor job we had. I'm not sure he's playing the same game we are. I certainly haven't seen dropships being used as he describes in his video, and if they were it would be out of pure generosity as it would yield no SP.
There have been dozens of feedback threads suggesting fixes so I won't repeat them here. I will just hope that the next build will give dropships a real mission and make piloting a paying profession for the first time. |

I liked how the first Planetside game handled rewarding pilots of transport ships. Any passenger's actions within a couple of minutes of ejecting would yield assist points for the pilot. In Dust, this would work by giving wp to the pilot, if a passenger hacks installations or gets kills shortly after leaving the dropship. That, and some wp for having ppl spawn in would make the vehicle slightly more worthwhile. |

Hey guys!
thanks for all the replys and I have read and reread the flight training guide by Skihids over and over :).
It helped alot, until i read the end of the topics when you guys talk about how its useless to fly now :( thought i was just missing something.
Anyway so about shield tanking vs armour tanking. Might be useless to fly right now but i want to starting skilling in one of those directions. What are your guys thoughts?
Skihids you only had shield tanking on your page, sadly i already skilled into gallete :/ should i switch now or is armour tanking viable?
PS..
I played alot of Leauge of legends before this game, i want to give a high five to the amazing community in Dust 514. if anybody plays lol you know it is the worst community a game has ever had.
good job :) |

Stick around I'm sure the community won't dissapoint.
Some good posters out there but a lot of trolls to wade through, feedback and request has the least trolls and any good ideas are discussed there.
As far as armor dropships, they don't have as much of a rock when hit by swarms, are better against forge guns and weaker against swarms. Armor slows you down and armor has a burn that will destroy your DS once it hits that threshold.
I think shield is better from what I hear and experience, though things can and do change. |
