When you are setting up your Fitting, you can compare the different items available to you. What is Meta Level? I've read that it's the "quality" of the item, but it doesn't seem to show in the stats.
For example, when comparing the Militia Assault Rifle, the (Standard) Assault Rifle and the (Advanced) GEK-38 Assault Rifle: Cost Mil:690 / Std:4000 / Adv:17640 CPU Mil:30 / Std:23 / Adv:47 PG Mil:5 / Std:3 / Adv:6 Damage Mil:30.0 / Std:30.0 / Adv:33.0 Rate of Fire Mil:750.0 / Std:750.0 / Adv:750.0 Accuracy Mil:56.0 / Std:56.0 / Adv:56.6 Clip Size Mil:48 / Std:60 / Adv:60 Max. Ammo Mil:300 / Std:300 / Adv:300 Reload Time Mil:3.5 / Std:3.0 / Adv:3.0 Meta Level Mil:0 / Std:1 / Adv:5
The major difference is in Meta Level, but the actual difference between the standard and advance versions don't seem to warrant the extra costs.
What am I missing?
--edit---
my point is that between the standard and advanced, i pay 441% more ISK, use 204% more CPU, and 200% more PG all for just a 1% increase in accuracy (from 56.0 to 56.6) and 10% increase in damage (from 30 to 33). |

From what i can tell the your meta levels affect the isk payout of the mercs that kill you. that means the folks with the adv/proto gear are both more dangerous and profitable. |

what? why?
It's actually a good thing if the other guys make more money when they kill me when i'm using high level gear. Other people having more ISK means that they will use better equipment - with higher meta levels. If everyone has a higher meta level I make more money per kill. This makes it easier to save up for that shiny new LAV i've been looking at.
Would you really restrict yourself to militia gear to try to use some form of economic warfare to try to force others to stick to militia gear as well? |

it just seems odd to go from 4,000 ISK to 17,640 ISK just to get in increase from 30 to 33 HP.
why would i pay an extra 13,640 just so that i'm a bigger cash-cow to my enemies when i die? i have entire dropsuit fittings that are less than 13K |

theres also a bonus to your effective range, so its not just an extra 3 points of damage, its also that it will do damage further out. |

Luckily for you I have got most weapons in a handy little thread at the top of the forum in a sticky regarding ranges. Don't forget to calculate taking your sharpshooter skills into account. |

yes, thank you Musta Tornius.
i saw that thread. unfortunately my PS3 is in the living room and my PC is in my office. it's a bit of a pain to run back and forth to compare when i'm trying to setup a dropsuit.
it's great that the info is there and it's obvious that range is taken into effect on the battle field. i just don't know why they don't give us that info in-game. it's not like they make us figure out how many bullets are in a clip by counting them as we shoot. |

When you've got millions saved up from constantly running cheap gear, that extra little bit of damage won't look so expensive. |

In EVE meta level is rather like the "generation" of item. Think of the "next generation" IPhone. Some stuff about it is better than the previous generation for some folks, some isn't. In EVE's open economy it doesn't even directly effect the item's cost except in the case where the price is fixed by the game. In general, if it is an item you can build it will be more expensive to build if it is a higher meta level.
As for what it's used for in Dust 514, I speculate it does not have any more direct meaning than it does in EVE. |
