Shields are more useful in close quarters combat - as they are slightly resistant to kinetic weapons and explosives. At a distance they get their faces melted off very fast by a laser rifle.
Shields use the high slots as the main tank modules, but armor uses the low slots leaving room for better mods. not to mention the armor mods are by and large less cpu/pg hungry than shield mods.
shields do regenerate to max cap by themselves with no other rep tools or mods - but only if not under fire. my life has been saved many times by an armor rep mod keeping my health up in the middle of a fight.
I have found armor tanking to be more useful to me, but everybody has their kink.

While Talos is most definitely right ( I wouldn't argue with a Nordic god after all) I believe a big part of it also falls under what suit you use the most. I personally tend to stick with shields because I play assault, and the Caldari have always been known to use massive shield tanks. Like their most infamous Battlecruiser, the Drake (which I do in fact fly currently ) |

Armour tanking, well it doesn't have the befits shield tanking has but nor does it have the same flaws. Unless you're in a scout suit your going to have at least 150 armour points as a base. Plus infantry mechanics (the skill that increases your base armour points) has no skill requirements and is easy to skill up. Lastly you can be repair remotely with a repair tool The big flaws are that armour plate modules reduces your overall speed and they don't upgrade well either. You'll need a separate module just to self repair, which penalises you the more armour you have, because they only repair a few points a second. To make it all the worse both of these are low power modules so your need to make some tough choices to which you use.
Shield tanking on the other hand, is better than armour tanking because your shields come back by themselves, it usually takes between 18-28 seconds to be fully revived your shield. This is because unlike amour repair your shield repair at a percentage of your total shields. Further more if you get knocked down and subsequently get revived (with a nano injector) you will come back up with full shields. But there not without a massive flaw. Should you be hit with a flash grenade your shields will just vanish. The other flaw is that you don't have a lot to begin with, the average suit has between 100-125 points of shields, extenders don't get good in till you've got complex ones and the skill that boosts your shields is not only has a large skill requirement has a fairly high cost too. Like the armour skill it'll only boost your base value not total value. Oh and can't repaired with a armour repairer.
I would have to say arguably shield tanking is better than armour tanking but both types are tank are kind of subpar unless your running around in a heavy suit with it's massive base values. A heavy running around with Heavy VK.0 with two complex amour plates and fully maxed infantry management skill can have a grand total of 1042.5 Armour Point Equally a the same heavy running around in a Heavy VK.1 with three complex shield extenders and maxed infantry shield management skill would have 596 Shield Points |

what parts don't you understand? i'll be happy to explain further if you need.
Yes, the odds are that shield tanking will be better for you in a medic role as you'd be able to jump in and out of cover to do your roles, and since you aren't going to be the main source of damage for your squad it'd would be just fine for you to use your high slots to get your shields upped instead of using that slot for damage mods. |

Wrong, this is not eve online. It's not based on percentage it's based on static points. 22hp/s not 2% of total hp/s. Although im still under the assumption that you get increased regen the lower your shields are. |

Sounds like CCP is using the EVE mode of thought. shield tanking as more individual sustainability, but armor being more beefy overall. the problem is armor is far more remote repair dependent. will see if the pattern holds true here once i get a few rounds in. just got the beta download. trying logistics. seems pretty cool so far. looking forward to graduating from the militia **** gear though. |

Actually, as my personal opinion, i think Shields currently have a lot more viablilty than Armor in Terms of Survival.
To elaborate, i'm reffering ONLY to my experiance with Dropsuits as i have hardly any experiance in Tanks.
For one, if you equip armor modules on your Dropsuit you suffere a Movement penalty that not only affects your sprinting speed but your Jumping Height (proven for Logistics but i'm not sure of the limit on other Dropsuits).
For Two, if you have LESS armor it's easier for a Logistics player to get your armor back to full since they don't have more armor to repair. I can repair a Type-II Heavy much quicker than a Type-I so as long as you have a Medic at your back and you have the ability not to get killed as soon as someone looks at you it's got quite the ability to survive.

It is about the people you are fighting, as a chain-gun wielding man/tank it is good to have shields that you can use to have a i primary defense that is regenerating fast will keep you in good shape for when you get gained up on. Armor is good when you get hit by a sniper or are running across the map to get to another firefight and your shield keep getting downed. Both are good to have, and so i have the regen for both on my suits. |

odds are the type-II has a higher base shield regen stat than the type-I. I'll check myself next time I log on. |

Its also worth pointing out that shield tanking can be assisted by PG and CPU modules, if you have insufficient fitting skills or are just squeezing more on lower meta suits. Armour does not have this luxury. It does allow you to fit damage mods, which can shorten fights.
Overall, it seems shield is low skill point friendlier. |

AS a Rule your first skills should be maxed in Shields, Shield Regen, and Mechanics to get the most protection possible. Then your weaponry and weapon of choice. The Passive skills are some of the most potent.

To be honest,
Shields are better for a Heavy. More specifically, you don't just want shields alone but you want the Type-II, B-Series, or VK.1 Dropsuits.
They trade less armor for more Shield and more Speed. Which increases your chances of survival and attack significantly. If you'd like more details I answered a similar question to this, in GREAT detail, in a post "A little heavy help." here in the training grounds.

Armor is crazy high hp that can be repaired under fire. It's not as universally useful as shields, but it has a purpose. |

Do you think the game would benefit (balance wise) if they added stronger resistance towards armor? i mean the main thing about shields is that they can recharge naturally and MUCH faster than armor can which is what makes them more viable. So if you were to give Armor a bonus that Shields didn't have i think they'd be alot more viable.

If there were a module for armor damage resistance that fit in a high slot a decently tanked heavy suit with someone actively repairing they would be nearly unstoppable. As things are now i've been able to win the dps game using a SMG vs a HMG heavy due to the fact someone is actively repping me. |
