I agree with the OP.
Yes, we understand that the current radar system works by line of site. But it needs to work by sight AND sound. It's pretty ridiculous that a tank can sneak up on you from around the corner. Isn't that what black ops variants are for? |

Isn't that what black ops variants are for? If you can hear it, and it's in line of sight, you can look around to see where it's coming from. If it's being sneaky-sneaky, then it's doing a better job than you.
... but it's not in the line of sight. That's the point. If it's not in the line of sight, you cannot tell which direction it's coming from. Forward, behind, left and right, who knows? I should AT LEAST be able to detect which direction it's coming from.
It's not as simple as "it's doing a better job" than me. It's a wonky game mechanic that doesn't make sense and makes deaths feel cheap. Similar to silent LAVs running people over.
I'm not quite sure why you seem to be against this idea. |

I'm not quite sure why you seem to be against this idea. When I said "in line of sight" I actually MEANT "in line of sight" not "in field of view" - If you COULD see it when looking the right direction, but aren't looking in the right direction, that's not the game's fault. Look around more. If you're not watching your back, and don't have someone else watching your back, expect tanks to show up there occasionally. Also, Shotgunners, SMG/AR guys, and... pretty much anything that can kill you. If you got snuck up on by a tank, YOU SCREWED UP. Simple as that. Possible exception of spawning in front of the tank, but then, it didn't really "sneak up" so much as "get lucky" in the same way anyone else can with a bad spawn.
Um, dude, I don't think you understand what we are talking about here. I think there is definitely some miscommunication going on. The issue that we are talking about is very specific/situational. And it probably happens 10% of the time when tanks are in play. The issue is: when the tank is completely "under cover" as in, you cannot see it at all because it's behind a wall or building, it is essentially impossible to tell which wall/corner it's hiding behind unless you can see where it's shots are coming from, if it is shooting at all. (And when I say "hiding", don't take it literally. It's a joke. I doubt anyone is actually trying to "sneak" in a tank).
It doesn't matter if you look around because if you did look around you would not be able to see it. Unless you have xray vision. We know the tank is close, we can hear it. But it is impossible to see it. Our decisions are a matter of luck rather than any type of thought. So it's not that the tank is "doing a better job" or we "screwed up", it's luck. Just. Luck. One guy just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The other guy just happened to stumble across the right place at the right time.
I'm not sure where you thought I was talking about "field of view" but I assure you that wasn't what I was talking about. We simply want the ability to detect vehicles in close proximity by using sound. That's all. |

I'm not quite sure why you seem to be against this idea. We've seen a lot of good gameplay opportunities and mechanics balanced out for the sake of poor playstyles. If you aren't aware of your surroundings, and you're moving as a solo player rather than as part of a squad, you will put on blinders and be mowed over by someone who pays attention to the little things -- like the directional indicator on your HUD icon. Want to avoid being blindsied by an LAV? Look both ways before crossing the street. That's something my 3 year old knows to do.
You are over-simplifying the issue.
And also the directional indicator isn't even a factor when talking about the issue we're talking about. AAAAnd also it doesn't matter how many people you have next to you. In fact, having your teammates spread out creates more line of sight angles; decreasing the chance of tanks rolling around unnoticed (Although it is still best to stick to your squad mates for anti-infantry support).
The battlefield isn't the two-way street outside of your house. More like, it's your house surrounded by an entire parking lot that it populated with hybrid cars (because they are silent) driving Tokyo Drift style. Now instead of teaching your kid to look both ways, you have to teach him to constantly spin around in circles when traversing the parking lot because he won't be able hear the cars coming. But get this, bullies like to loiter this parking lot and throw rocks at your kid. So while your kid is watching out for these silent cars, he also has to be wary of the bullies.
So pretty much your kid is going to either: Get hit in the back of the head watching for stupid silent hybrid cars OR he'll get run over by a stupid silent hybrid car while he is throwing rocks back at the bullies; having no chance to evade said car. I'm sure your kid had a happy life.

Anyways, I'm not sure what is so bad about this idea in the first place (please elaborate if you have an answer for this)? I think a lot of people are just tired of hearing complaints; tired of playing this beta. Ask yourselves: Is this game breaking? If not game breaking, how does it harm the game? What specific game play "opportunity" does this idea inhibit?
Again, I don't think we are asking for much. I'm actually surprised we are having an argument about this (this seems like a no-brainer type of thing to me). |
