Implement a sidearm (or possibly equipmement) slot unit that does no damage but that creates a 2 dimensional shield, large enough to cover a crouching person against a shot from a single direction. It should not cover the head of the player holding it though. It should only be active while the "fire" button is pressed.
The primary use of this would be to protect other players when hacking or calling in vehicles, orbital strikes, etc. primarily against snipers. It couldn't be activated by the player doing these activities themselves.
It wouldn't help against splash damage.
Snipers can head-shot the player holding the shield and then shoot whoever it was shielding. The shield should be visible to some extent so the sniper knows it is there.
Maybe shields create interference such that you can't activate it if there is another one in close proximity to avoid creating impenetrable shield walls.
This would make it harder (but by no means impossible) for one sniper to stop two coordinated enemies from hacking an objective (assuming they know where he is). Two coordinated snipers can take out the hacking team almost instantly though. Teamwork wins. |

In my opinion this would essentially be a futuristic riot shield. I think it could work.
Would the player using it become immobile or would they be able to crouch walk with it? |

Portable shield generator for the support slots would be more effective. Acts as a deployed device and errects a shield wall that absorbs much of incoming damage until it is depleted. Work for you? Works for me, and something I could see making sense to implement in game.
Save the Sidearm slot for sidearms; you might still need one, and it makes more sense to have it in the support slots. Also, this would mean Heavies couldn't deploy them as they have no support slots afaik. |

It is difficult at best to stop someone from hacking an objective. They can stand off to either side and/or squat. That gives six zones the sniper has to cover and from experience that isn't happening. Once one Merc is down the others normally pay attention and try a different position. Maybe you should try that before changing the game so you can be successful.
I know there are better snipers than myself but the best I have done was three or four off one objective. Yet, that was over two separate hacking attempts with the Blues having retaking it in between. On a single attempt the best I ever did was two Reds killed with several having their shields stripped but the SMG at my back stopped me from getting more.

I had just been thinking of making a thread about this.
Deployable cover could come in two varieties: armour and shields. They act the exact same way as armour and shields do on a dropsuit, only you are able to deploy it and hide behind it, but they are unfortunately destructible.
Both the shield and armour variants would have it's pro's and con's: shield covers provide a larger area of cover, and possibly even allow friendly fire to pass through, but suffers from generally lower HP and high CPU costs. Armour, on the other hand, has higher HP and maybe some of the higher-tier covers even have weak armour hardeners built-in, but as they are completely static, you have to expose yourself in order to open fire on anyone. Armoured cover would also be able to be repaired by repair tools, although if it's receiving too much concentrated fire, it may only delay the inevitable. Flux grenades would obviously destroy the shield covers instantly [depending on the HP and DMG], but would actually have no effect on armour covers other than maybe disabling the possible armour hardeners, but normal explosives, provided they did enough damage, would still tear through armour covers. |

I like this idea, I wouldn't mind if it was a deployable shield that only lasted around 20 seconds and had maybe 700-1000 hp, maybe more. It could be great for alot of situations, personally I wouldn't mind sniper stand offs. Both snipers have eachother in their site waiting for the shielding to run out, first one to make the shot wins \o/ |

It should cover the head, but being a shield it obviously would only be good covering fire from one direction on a 3 dimensional map.
it should also reduce mobility when equipped, and not allow sprinting. |

I like 2 of the ideas here, a mobile sidearm shield for mobile squad tactics and a immobile equipment shield. I think they should both have a certain amount of HP they can absorb before failure and possible recharge/overheat. |

Was considering creating a thread when I decided to just search first. Anyways, I think this would kind of be a awesome idea for an equipment. I hate to use another game as an example but like a previous poster said something similar to the shields in Halo not the bubble shields (though those would be pretty cool too) but something small enough to cover a single person from one direction of fire. Something completely deployable. Just drop and wait for activation. And maybe with the different variants they be useful in different situations. Such as the standard single person infantry shield only as wide and tall as the user. The more expensive one capable of protecting 2-3 units. Then maybe another sacrificing height for width. Which would increases the width of the shield and curve it to give the user a greater protection from fire of alternate direction. |

imo, this sounds like utter crap. Most people already complain about heavies having too much health and many other stupid things.
Imagine this scenario. Shotgun guy comes sprinting towards you with shield out and his head is only visible and when he gets close enough he just turns it off and switches to his shotty and OHK's you. Unless you are a king motherfu****.... you will maybe land one or two headshots maybe if he is running straight at you, but not while he is jumping around being a shield fairy.
And what if a heavy uses one. You think you are safe because you are just out of his range.... not. Puts up the shield and slowly crouch walks towards you to get in range and rapes you.
If this was implemented, only way i see it as not game breaking is if it takes up your main weapon slot. |

lol, "anti sniper shields". It really won't help you against snipers at all. Especially, if it doesn't cover your head. Good snipers don't have much problem landing a headshot at 400+ meters. lol
Just call it what you want it to be: a riot shield.
Add some variety too. Armor Shields, Energy Shields, and Bubble Shields
By it's a very function alone, it should be highly effective against all small arms fire, and should occupy the primary weapon slot. Maybe something like this:
Armor Riot Shield = can only use and move while crouched. last the longest maybe indefinitely. can't see from behind it. allows for peek-out sidearm fire.
Energy Riot Shield = can use and move while standing. limited duration, that will require deactivating to recharge. you can see through it. allows for peek out sidearm fire.
Bubble Shield = cannot move while deployed. duration depends on amount of damage sustained. draws energy from your standard shield. since it provides full angle protection, no counter-attacking is possible. |

sounds to me like a hardlight hex sheild, sounds grand, and possible, but we gotta find out if CCP is willing to do this. and Jath, that sounds interesting, but the Armored shield looks like it would take a weapon slot |

Yeah, I'd have the Armor and Energy riot shields take up a primary weapon slot, and have the bubble shield be a module. |

that... works spectacularly, though eventually both LightHex and Armored sheilds would need a fix of some time, because power units fail... and enough shots of plasma or slugs to a peice of metal would wear it down.
... lightbulb.
okay, Energy based weaponry, like the AR, LR would do less to the armored sheilds, since there is no actual mass hitting them, just little heat blips. but slug based weapons would still do full.
the LightHex would have the opposite, stuff like the AR could wear it down faster cause it owuld draw more from the power unit, but stuff that fires slugs, meaning SMGs and Sniper Rifles would do less |

Good idea, adding my thoughts...
Support Drones. Fills equipment slot. Different varieties to choose from depending on "Drones" Skill level or some such. Once deployed, stays in the location that it was deployed. Similar in size to a drop-uplink or nano-hive. Has pre-determined HP that is modified based off of a relevant skill.
Armor and Shield Version covers radius or plane comparable to same skill level Nano-Hive with a difference in area and HP depending whether shield or armor.
Use animation and controls that are used for remote explosives to tell the drone to move to a new location. Temporary, weak barrier with obvious tactics.
And just another thought...
Hologram drone. place-able and not movable (maybe?) Emits 1 or more (based on skill level) images of your character in random location within the drones radius. (Final Fantasy "shadows" concept) Kinda like a shield in that it protects you because the enemy might shoot at an image instead of you. Image prolly needs to distort or disappear after some shoots it so that the shooters knows what's happening. (It is just a piece of equipment after all) If someone watches as you deploy the drone they will be able to pick out the real you....unless you can shuffle in with the images. Not so great in the middle of a fight but could help with snipers having to determine who's who. Just a thought, needs refinement. |
