I've had it with dropships in every single match. Every single one. They never go down and the gunners all go 30/1 or better every time.
Why is that? Is it because dropships are OP? Is it because the pilots are all uber l33t triple OG? Global warming? El Ni+Ļo? No, that's not it...It must be their unparallelled mastery of aerial combat maneuvers, right? RIGHT?!?
Maneuvers? What maneuvers? They're like Han Solo evading fire from an Imperial Star Destroyer by moving slightly to the left. A circle is not a maneuver. That's what you do when you are untouchable.
The reason they are untouchable is obvious. I see nothing but little dainty rockets gracefully flying in formation behind them before finally pirouetting right in to the side of a building. I see very few accelerated balls of superheated deathfire. Where are the other forge gunners?
I'm usually the only one which tends to make me a somewhat conspicuous target. Forge Guns are the tool for the job. Fighting dropships with swarms is like trying change a flat tire with a wallaby.
To the other forgers out there: Send me a message, add me as a contact, smoke signals, pajamagram me I don't care. I'll look for you in a game. You're probably like me and a lot of the time say screw it and just run around with a militia fit assault or just leave because honestly screw that crap. Some more folks need to put on their big people pants and train even just a little bit into forges (oh wait, no...there's the SP cap. Good call CCP). We gotta team up on these stupid kittens. |

Y'know, every time a dropship hoves into view I feel like I'm playing that darn boss level in Half-Life 2 again. The one with the helicopter. It's definitely an "OH SHEEP!" moment for a Logi.
I'm torn. It makes the game exciting the first few times, but since with my logi suit I'm too slow to outrun or dodge, and have no way to fight back, I just die every time they swing by and it gets boring. Particularly on that big map with the oil rig looking thing.
Dropships confuse me anyway. I thought they were aerial APC's meant for fast, tactical insertions of ground troops, and instead people use them as a replacement for ground troops. |

Combine a swarmer with anythign that has a big enough impact on the dropship to force it to slew around (so far my favorite is the small rail turret on teh back of a blaloch).
Or if you're a hot-shot with your forge gun, I'll gladly waste a few swarm rounds to flush that bird for you (when dodging swarm missiles I've noticed they tend to fly flat trajectories to keep their speed up)
Myself I'm a **** poor shot with the forge gun, so I settle for putting a few swarm missiles on them so they have to move out of my area of operations (more to make them go away than to make them go boom, sadly) |

The confusion stems from a conflict between the textual description of the dropship and what it is effective at and actually gets rewarded for. The text highlights transport, but small maps, excessive knockback from swarms, and no SP reward makes it both risky and mostly pointless. Proto level small missile turrets on the other hand are both very effective and rewarded.
Dropships can fall to swarms if they slow too much, and that happens on occasion due to the low ceiling and high hills combined with the dusty atmosphere on one maps. However forge guns are their natural preditors. A top tier gunner can solo a ship, but it generally takes two lower level gunners coordinating and that doesn't happen often in pub matches. In that sense they sem OP in pub matches at the same time they are very UP in corp battles.
I tend to lose enough ships such that I'm always on the verge of running out of fits, so it seems fairly balanced to me right now. |

There is a lot of ppl who spec'ed into FG. The problem currently tho is that you are de-incentivised to actually spawn as AV to deal with that pesky DS.
A) the game will spawn the AV heavy in the middle of red-dots who will take turns on the poor bastid.
B) The blue dots are just that. They don't give a $h!7 about the idiot AV guy who's trying to for the team - they will not provide anti-infantry cover.
C) Even if you against all odds, lang a couple of FG shots into the hull, the DS will just fly off the map and rep - you will not get points for scaring it off and it takes a dumb DS pilot to keep ignoring FG after being hit numerous times. So being AV simply does not pay in the classical sense of the word.
I don't expect this problem to go away until there are solid corp battles where your corp needs your AV skills to help and will reward you. In the random pick up games, your best strategy is too run far away from blue dots so that DS is busy killing your teammates and hopefully not after you. |

AV does have a difficult time in Ambush where they spawn randomly, but that isn't an issue in Skirmish. I lose most of my ships in Skirmish for that reason combined with a need to concentrate on the objectives. AV knows that I'm coming by and they know it's safe to spawn in. I enjoy the challenge of flying in Skirmish despite the much greater danger. It's rewarding to supply close air support for a team push on an objective because it requires much more planning and skill as well as braving significantly increaed risk.
A favorite spot for a forge gunner is on a peak behind the tower on B. It's protected from long distance shots and standing on the top protects them form splash. Any ship swinging around the tower will be slow due to hill being so near the flight ceiling leaving little altitude to trade for speed. That's probably the most dangerous spot to fly on any map.
The poor spawn mechanism combined with no natural objective makes Ambush mode more of a losing prospect for AV, though it also makes it a touch more difficult to call in a ship in the first place without getting shot at before it's even delivered. Granted the former is more troublesome than the latter. |

Most Forge Gunners I see only Forge Gun when there is a tank or dropship on the field. otherwise, they play Assault or whatever, and when HAV or Dropship hits the field, they run to the Supply Depot to grab their Forges.
I'm weird and stubborn. I ALWAYS run with a Forge, even when there are no vehicles in play.
still working on the Infantry problem, but right now what i do is take shots at Infantry with the Forge if I have the distance and opportunity, and try a combination of Grenades and SMG to defend myself in relatively close range. Need to skill up in Grenades though soon. working on my defensive skillpoints at the moment. |

No
Vexen Krios wrote:I've solo'd a few but only with a breach I can hardly ever take one out by myself but I've done it This was true for a while but as people get the SP for better fits it becomes extremely difficult if not impossible to to solo kill one of them so long as the pilot and gunners are decent. The problem is that once ironside gunnlogi's, LAV's that you couldn't OHK, and these hit and run dropships started showing up it suddenly got real hard to blow stuff up. Most if the people using forge's with garbage fits got tired of dying and didn't want to invest any more in to it. Then the people that were in between ended up all alone and they couldn't solo kill anything anymore and they got sick of dying so they quit. Now that brings us to where were are now. There's a dropship in the air every single match almost, frequently two of them. And yet I'll still be the only forge gunner out there. |

Yeah mainly I use tier one stuff but it gets the job done most times but if they are beefy vehicles the best I do is keep them moving. |

I feel your pain. I usually end up switching between FG and HMG. But after I loose three suits, I go militia as I'm a mediocre player at best. Well at least until they fix mouse sensitivity, then I'll get better. |

A good Forge Gunner, or a pair of decent Forge Gunners working together, can rip a Dropship apart pretty quickly.
Swarm pathing is a known issue.
If you have a Swarm launcher, don't fire as the Dropship flies over, and don't fire while it's moving any direction but towards you.
Watch its route, place yourself in the Dropship's circling path, and wait. When it's heading TOWARDS you, fire.
Sometimes, the missiles derp, and swerve away from the target for no reason, then come back and chase it like they normally would. Sometimes they derp and DODGE the Dropship so they can get behind it and look pretty. But sometimes - just sometimes - they actually fly on a rational collision course. And when they do? Totally worth it. |

Tried assault forge. Did not like it. Hard to use it from behind a cover and when playing forge you gotta use cover carefully, since heavy suits move so slow. |
