Until today, I haven't touched a mass driver since last build; the biggest problem was fixed, but there are still some odd things with it.
- While there are actual explosions now, sometimes they still don't seem to deal damage
- This may be my imagination, but I seem to be moving more slowly with mass drivers than with assault rifles
- So little ammo. I now understand why logis are always shown using mass drivers; not because that's the best weapon for them, or because it's a minmatar weapon, but because you need a stockpile of nanohives.
- The sights are still useless- I would much rather have a helpful sight than a realistic sight.
- Damage doesn't seem to be correct- the splash damage is supposed to be much higher than the direct damage of a tac AR, but in reality, it isn't
On the plus side, mass drivers are now the bane of LAVs everywhere. |

I have level 5 mass driver operation and level 2 proficiency. Even with the exo-5 mass driver I barely do anything against anyone with shields...which is pretty much everyone.
Once their shields are down though it's a one hit kill for pretty much anyone I've run into as long as they are in my 6 meter blast range :P
Even so, Mass drivers need to be more effective against shields, or come with a variant that explodes as an emp blast. The only way to counter someone who is using lots of shields is the flux grenade. This works very well when encountering a group of enemies.
The biggest problem with the mass driver is the ammo count, and the fact that splash damage also affects the user :/ |

I used flux grenades with mass drivers last build, so I guess I'll try it again, I like the idea of the emp variant.
For now, I guess I'll try directly shooting someone with it (unfortunately, projectile damage is still worse against shields than armor)
I might even go as far as switching to a type II logistics, to counter the reduced speed and allow me to get into melee range faster. |

I'm having quiet a bit of success with the flux and mass driver combo and my skills in it are not half as high yet. Just don't get caught in close quarters and don't get caught alone. |

+ 1 to having a bigger ammo count. Currently running with nanohives to keep myself topped up (and others ofcourse). Im still not the best with it as sometimes it seems with splash its not allways applying, even when the red dot is in the blast radius. But that could be my aim
Oh and I have MD at V prof at 1, so its not like im using the basic one. But using the MD is fun |

I'm with you on that one- when my team actually stuck in a pack, I went 7-1 with it (well, 1 of the kills was hitting a heavy with melee after I ran out of ammo); and with the 1 death, I was still bleeding out when the battle ended. |

They need to add a reload in between each grenade. Popping out 4 at a time like that is insane. And people want to increase the damage to it??
If that's the case...increase the damage to my AR. |

The sight is pretty useless but I'm fine with that. Mastering the grenade arc is part art and part science (and all joy). When you can get those long range kills it feels good!
It is a good weapon for logistics because we generally have the ammo to keep it happy and fed. It is also a good choice for logistics when we are doing our job and not taking point.
When I get to play with a good group, I follow them. They take point get most of the kills sure, but when they need to take cover the mass driver discourages reds from advancing (often finishing them off). And my lack of kills is usually made up with support actions anyway. |

I did try it...just not my style. Either way, I was asking for a reload not a decrease in damage. Adding a reload after each grsenade classifies as a nerf?
Edited: Well, maybe it does classify as a nerf |

You will likely die going up against anyone solo(I tend to go 1 and 1 when I use the mass driver solo - it works much better when you use it as a support weapon though). |

from what ive seen of corp mates its one to range, two to kill and one to fire uselessly at the guy heartlessly mowing you down with a GEK... while it may be ok at an occasional cheap kill it is still out shined in usability compared other weapons in the light classification AR's, LR's, SG's, SR's. for it to compare to any of those as a mid-long range main weapon it would need a drastic increase in available ammunition and 6 rounds in the chamber, much less direct damage, with a wider area of splash and possibly a flux variant. though to be honest this weapon served a better purpose attached to the bottom of a gallente AR in the 2009 fanfest demo.
EDIT; or it could stay as it is to join SMG's and SP's as a neat option for a side arm. |

Last build the massdriver was my favorite piece of bang bang, and will be again im sure when the game goes live.
My best tip for aiming practice would be to get in a skirmish match, and then go find some out of the way place that you can practice with. Until we get some kind of training 'boot camp' map level with weapon ranges this is your best option. Its a beta in any case, so sluffing off during a pub match to get some basic techniques down is no biggie IMO.
Then you find something to use as an aiming stake, an obstacle, terrain feature, or whatever. Lay down a hive if you have to and fire away until you get the trajectory down. Vary the ranges for different trajectories, shoot on the the move, and also select aiming stakes that are tall enough that you can practice shooting into elevations.
Of course, then there is also hands on combat experience shooting at live player targets during the match.
That's just my best advice. I am a longtime player of the Tribes series, using the heavy suit and the mortar it can carry (dont wanna think about a heavy suit here carrying an oversived mortar massdriver, lol) and most of my training and practice my tribe (clan) provided for me was along these lines.
Course, we also had a serve that ran nothing but the custom Boot Camp map that one of our tribe members designed, and it was always full of new players out practicing. It had ranges and targets for almost every weapon in the game, plus obstacles courses for jumpjet and maneuvering practices.

MDs are fine its an explosive weapon so does more to armor and less to shields its working as intended. We dont need an EMP one u already have Laser Rifles which are effective vs shields but weaker vs armor lets not try to make every weapon be good against everything. |

KInda viewed as easy mode by a few peeps I know. Put one on an alt of mine with a scout suit and it seems kinda epic in cqb and for some reason seems to cause a fair bit of fear. Perhaps the effects are being confused with a small missile turret and that why so many run from it not knowing its just some noob spamming a mass driver. |

I've been running with a mass driver as logistics for the last few weeks. I figure I'm support and don't worry too much about my KDR. My goal is to keep my team alive, supplied and pushing forward. When my team is pushing up a bottleneck I'll lay down fire to keep the enemy hopping around and give them a chance. If I get a kill I figure I'm lucky.
I agree though that many time in close quarters combat I know the enemy is in the blast radius and they aren't taking any damage. On several occasions I've snuck up on a sniper and setup a perfect shot within fairly close range and they've had time, while I'm reloading, to take aim and snipe me. Yeah, something is wrong with blast damage. |

I agree about the explosions sometimes not causing damage, it happens to me from time to time.
As far as reloading between rounds the maximum fire rate is 1 per second, that's slow enough IMO. |

Something I've begun to notice as I start to focus more on this weapon is that the Mass driver has tactical use for a squad outside of it's damage capabilities. The blast creates a pretty thick cloud of smoke(much more than any locus grenade) after the explosion that can be used to obstruct the view of an opponent allowing squad mates to close the distance and make the kill. |

I seem to have horrible luck fighting against Mass Drivers.
Worse than my luck against Missile Turret spam, actually.
If I'm running from your Mass Driver, it's NOT because I think there's a vehicle. It's because I know you have a Mass Driver, and I hate fighting them. I don't know why. I occasionally come out on top, but a regular Mass Driver is scarier to me than an Advanced Tac AR. |

This seems to be my go to secondary weapon, was SL but not this build, and always enjoy using it.
There are noob aspects to the weapon, mainly it being a noob tube, but it does have big draw backs. The ADS is just horrible and can't see anyone ever using them, reload time, pretty hefty on cpu/pg, and limited ammo with usually only 4 rounds ( I think there are some with 6 but not sure).
The most problems I see with AE weapons are on hill sides with different elevations, same with precision strikes, the explosions don't seem to register.
Another problem with MD is that every once in awhile ill be shooting but the rounds don't shoot, it makes the sound and does the animation but no rounds are being fired. This has gotten me killed more than once so ya that needs fixin'. |

I think the sights are fine we don't need a even more noobish sight that just shows you were it's going to land(like most games do with grenade launcher type weapons.) That should come with forethought and experience. |

There are still duds/no shots but they're far better than when they were first introduced.
Hip firing is more accurate than using the sights right now so something else would be nice(maybe a clear sight instead of metal).
Don't forget about the camera shake the enemy gets when your shot lands nearby which helps a lot with support, not quite as much when you're alone. |

Currently, the first 3 shots of a MD are to take the shields down, and the last shot takes out the armor. If there was an EMP variant, the first shot of it would take down the shields, while the last 3 shots would be to try getting through the armor. |

To your point about mass drivers needing to be more effective against shields, I think that's solved by squading up with 1 or more laser rifle users.
Some might argue that it's too much effort, but I personally would prefer this game to require more teamwork rather than evening out every weapon. |
