Any answer you get is just speculation at this point.

But to speculate, you can buy old PS2 and PS-One games through the playstation store, so it shouldn't be too difficult to do something similar with the PS4. Further, when the PS3 first came out, the original design was backwards compatible with a quick download iirc. Either of those two is likely. Regardless, we're in the middle of the digital age. I don't forsee this being too big a problem.

 Based on past CCP habbits

They will release a client similar to ours on the PS4 it will basically be a port until the PS3 population dips to an acceptable level of 'pruning' at that point they'll discontinue PS3 support and go full PS4 support so anywhere between 1-2 maybe 3 years after ps4 launch will they shift over then take full advantage of the ps4's specifications.

It's possible they could have more visual options available to people playing the game on the PS4, so there might be a bit of cosmetic difference at least. But yeah, as IWS said, they wouldn't really go full-bore with making Dust into a next gen console game until the PS3 playerbase has mostly migrated over to the PS4. Which would be a couple years after the release of the PS4, I guess.

CCP kept two separate EvE clients running for a fairly lengthy amount of time, so I imagine they'll do something similar with DUST.

Its been suggested that the game has been pre emptively designed to run as-is on the PS4. With CCP admitting a 5 year plan on development this only makes sense. And with the PS4 loosely confirmed through leaks to use cell processor tech, both systems could conceivably access the game simultaneously with no emulation required.

DUST also runs on intel arch, at least earlier iterations did and as a developer I see no reason why it shouldn't be relatively easy to get it running again.

That is for them to know and for you to find out.

PS4 architecture is PC based (AMD APU) as opposed to the current CELL based PS3.
Unreal Engine 4 will run quite happily on a PS4, so it's highly likely that there will be two clients for Dust, one UE3 based for the PS3 and one UE4 based for the PS4.

All that said, it's also possible that CCP's current engine (Carbon) could run quite happily on a PS4, so it's also possible that the PS4 will get a Carbon (or newer) based client instead of UE4, that is pure speculation though.

CCP's single shard server architecture means they can effectively have as many different clients as they like, for as many different hardware configurations as they want to push Dust out to.

I suspect the actual reason for running UE3 on the PS3 is that they may have a "Free License". this is because UE3 is FREE to develop for NON-PROFIT software. Seeing as Dust is FREE TO PLAY it may well be that their license for UE3 is FREE, they monetize by selling AURUM, which is obviously not covered by the free license of UE3. It's a very smart move if that's what they have done.

Please don't lambaste me for any inaccuracies, I'm only speculating, but as an Indie Developer (and ex-IT bod) I know a "little" about licenses, hardware and stuff and have looked into UE3 for a few projects.

it is assumed that it will be the same look and feel early on but then durring one or more of the expansions happen they may go for an overhaul to foucs on the PS4's power. its a matter of how many ppl will adopt the PS4 early on to make that decision similar to the way they upgrade things in EVE.

 1) They haven't figured out how to get it to run properly on the PS3 and you're worried about the PS4?

 2) There's no release date for this game on the ps3....and you're worried about the ps4?

 3) There's no spec sheet on the ps4 and you're asking about capabilities?

 Seriously? I mean...really?

 1) it runs fine on the PS3, the main problem is balance which takes 90% of dev time

 2) release date is "early next year"

 3) there are plenty of spec sheets around (AMP APU, 8Gb Ram, Blu-ray, etc), also PS4 dev kits have been out in the wild for a while now.

They will just have 2 clients one being more graphically intense than the other. Maybe even 1 client with just an option to notch up the settings, after all eve doesn't just work on good spec and bad spec computers and laptops, it also runs on mac and Linux as well now if I'm not mistaken. As long as all clients chat with the sever in the same way, it matters not how the actual client works
