I've been thinking about the ammo system from EVE, and haven't seen a reason as to why we can't implement it over here on the surface. We would be able to load a gun with a certain kind of ammo for a bonus to cost and damage, as we seem to be using the same kind of free ammo that the freebie ships in EVE use.
Say you had an HMG, costs 8,000 ISK (for arguments sake, give or take). We could load it with EMP rounds for an extra 1,000 ISK or so and it would do bonus damage to shields. If we grabbed the advanced HMG, we would spend 36,000 or so on the gun itself, and 1,000 ISK still on the ammo, due to it being the same ammo size and type.
This also works in reverse, being able to use special ammo on Militia guns to maximize damage early on and over multiple kinds of firearms, drawing from a separate batch of skills.
Any ideas? Yea or Nay? Anything at all would be appreciated.
Other examples using the above HMG could be Phased Plasma rounds for extra shield damage and a bit of armor bonus, Fusion ammo would have a small armor bonus and a AoE effect on the point of impact similar to a blaster turret, but scaled down to match, and Titanium Sabot rounds could add a decent amount of armor damage, with a small bonus to shield damage, while Carbonized Lead would be a weaker, but cheaper form of Titanium Sabot.
THIS IS BY NO MEANS LIMITED TO HEAVY WEAPONS OR PROJECTILE WEAPONS. I merely used the HMG as I am most familiar with projectile turret ammo in EVE, and it is the only handheld weapon I was positively sure was classed as projectile. |

EvE lasers, projectile, and hybrids all had a ammo that was the base line, this could be what we have now. There were several ammo types to reduce range with more damage or increase range with lower damage. Projectile could also change damage type with the ammo. Lasers only did two damage types so there was less variation. Hybrid damage type only changed ratio of kinetic and thermal damage, not much difference anyway.
There was also pricey faction ammo, this boosted damage with no skill requirement but was expensive.
Guns could have a ammo slot, if left empty they work like they do now. If ammo slot is filled weapon uses stats with bonus and penalties of the ammo type. A module could allow carrying extra ammo of the same or other types to switch to. Or, maybe something like a nano hive could be dropped by logi to allow equipping different ammo type.
Ah, switching ammo types mid battle... had completely forgotten about that, thanks for bringing it up.
As for ammo modifier vs upgraded ammo, I'm not sire what you are getting at. You have to buy any bullets you fire in EVE, so I'm not quite sure what 'base line' ammo is, would you please explain? |

Medium damage boost to armor, mild damage boost to shield, 50% shorter firing range sound fair to ya? :D |

Well, nomatter what CCP says, most people will swear by certain weapons for different HP types, like they'll say Forge Guns are better against tank shields while SLs are better for armor, or that Laser Rifles will strip your shield bare in a flash while taking a while on the armor... I haven't USED a LR, so it's all hearsay to me, but people seem to feel armor and shield may have inbuilt resistances already. |
