Hi,
I was wondering where people put there early(ish) skill points. I kinda referring the ones after gunnery and range etc.
In EvE I tend to ensure I can fit everything first before trying to squeeze things in, so Engineering and Electronics makes sense, however I am really not very good at this game and a part of me says "why fit more expensive things when you are barely breaking even on skill-books and militia gear".
I'm just wondering where you put your skills. Also, if possible, can you please state your chosen play style and why you put the skills where you did.

As we are still in beta and have numerous wipes ahead, I wouldnt worry much about perfecting your characters build skillwise. Just train the minimum amount required to try new weapons, dropsuits, vehicles etc. Find what you like and have fun. Once the game goes live you will have a good idea where you want your character to go and what skills will help you most.
After upgrading your weapons and range, if you havent already learn the shield and armor skils to allow faster recharge and bigger hp. That way you can take a few more hits even in militia gear, giving you more chance of getting to cover where the extra recharge should help you recover quicker. |

Started out getting Weaponry up, early on stay away from level 5's
As i train more into better modules i train the fitting skills as i go. Normally at the start of the week i do one level 5 and then smaller skills the rest of the week. |

Since I find the base weapons sufficient I've been putting my skill points into survivability. Shield upgrades, drop suit command, caldari assault drop suit, ect. Of course if you want to go heavy armor you spec into armor and not shields, but I'm sure you got the gist of it lol |

look into passive advantages
obvious skills
mechanic +5% to armor amount per lvl
armor upgrades -% reduction in pg usage of armor mods
dropsuit command -5% scan profile per lvl
shield operations +3% to shield recharge rate
shield upgrades 3% reduction in cpu usage of shield mods
shield management is a good one as its passive +5% to shield hp per lvl
other skills
profile dampening -5% sig radius per lvl
long range scanning +5% to scan range per lvl helps see enemys a bit earlier as u detect them further away
endurance +5% to stamina per lvl ( also unlocks abillity to use cardiac stimulant)
vigor +5% to stamina recovery per lvl
hacking +5% to hack speed per lvl
profile analysis -5% to scan precision per lvl

go defensive or offensive? hmm good question , i pile on offensive skills first and play less aggresivley then add defensive so i can play how i like more. get most things to lvl 3 before really specializing. |

Depends on your gameplay. If you have played FPSs before you know what kind of gun you like. ARs or shotguns or HMGs. Long range or short. AV or AI. The second thing you need to see is whats your gameplay style;- bunny hop around, sit and snipe or be a fatty and run around.
Then decide on if you want to drive vehicles or fly dropshits!
Based on that let me know and I can guide you to your best options in terms of skill trees! |

i wouldnt be too sure about that they are seeding TQ today so it wont be long till we are on there. thats 1 wipe. how many after we hit TQ is anyones guess. could be zero upwards. |

On a weird note, I'm trying to fly you in EvE right now (cool name).
So far in my Dust career I kinda liked Logi and am starting to like Assaults a little more, at least since I switch to the Tactical Rifle, which has significantly improved my aiming skills.
I am in now way skill enough to bunny hop and shoot, as I can barely shoot and find cover in time at this stage.
I've not really tried vehicles other than jumping some abandoned ones. I can certainly drive a jeep thingy around without crashing it, not sure if that makes me good or not.
But I think overall, I'll almost certainly end up a general merc or logi.

ps. Thus far I have put most of my points into Shields (regen and max), Armour, Gunnery and have started playing with sensor dampners, which seemed to me to work quite well in my last game. It might just just been luck, but I was managing to shoot people before they were able to respond, whcih I put down to not seeing me on the map......
pps. How do I test a dropship? is it cheap enough to try? |

First, I would highly recommend you find a heavy or a bunch of heavies that you can roll with. I would recommend carrying a nanohive and a repair kit and/or nanite injector with you. This would be great to help the heavies. In addition you will have plenty of cover to take pot shots at people from behind a heavy. A heavy's weakness is long range. This is where you would come in and take out the dudes trying to take out the heavy.
Recommended skills: Weaponry Mechanics Light Weapon Sharp shooter Light Weapon Ugrade Nanohives level 1 Repair systems level 1

You can buy the standard militia vipers or gorgons. No skill required here. I think they are about 130K a pop! Skirmish maps at the back are great to test them out.

Whatever you want to do, you need money. So, start farming ISK. If you have AUR, that's perfect, you buy the BPOs items, and run full milicia.
With this fit, just up the "basics" skills : Shield Operation lvl4 --> Shield management, Mechanics, Weaponry, "Your weapon" Operation, Light/Heavy/Sidearm Sharpshooter (depend of your weapon again), maybe some rapid reload,
When you upped a little bit "Your Weapon" Operation to lvl3, run some AUR weapon, and try to fit it on your milicia. If you can't (and you won't be able ;)), up Electronics and Engineering, maybe some Light/Heavy Upgrade (to earn some CPU ;)).
And when you have more money, go look for the A-series dropsuit (for logi, it's just heaven ;))
Well, in general, this is my thoughts : don't use ISK till you get enough and have fun with it.... |

I don't want to farm anything, but making more than I do now would be great. Other than getting kills do you have any tips on making more ISK?

isk wise nothing above advanced is worth considering in most cases when your starting. Just like eve I think it's best put your skill points into support skills 1st.
You'll hit the cap soon, but you need almost all of your isk for skill books at the start so I would focus on making your militia fits better. So yeah weaponry to 4, fitting skills to 4, put some skill points into the stamina skills for longer sprinting. One of the biggest skills to aim for is the 2nd tier shield skill which gives shield hp per level.
Then while you get up your fitting skills I like to skill up to level 3 in 3 weapons. I went for sniper/mass driver/pistols.
Also I'm still saving up to finish buying all of my support skills :P So it'll take you some time. |

When I say "farming", it means : don't play with ISK items, but with BPOs, AUR items, or starter fits !!!

Milicia Gears on the market : find AUR items in the menus
And make more ISK ? As a logi, it's so simple : put nanohives, medic, repair (it seems that you're not earning any WP, but ISK maybe, I think so...), make assistance, keep a heavy back, let him go forward and get ennemie's bullets. |

Depends on what you want to do. If you want to get close in and kill crap, I suggest Mechanics ASAP as it is easy to get and gives you an armor bonus. You should get Armor Upgrades so you can use armor plating in your low slots. I run militia gear basically with Mechanics 3 and just run around capping people with a militia shotgun. (I have ZERO points toward shotgun usage, only weapons 5) As I learned how to use Shotguns effectively, my KD ratio keeps heading towards 1, as I am now getting more kills than deaths in matches.
My favorite suit's setup is a militia assault suit with 2 militia shield extenders, a militia armor plate, a militia shotgun, a toxin SMG, militia locus grenades, and a militia nanite injector. This allows me to run and gun rather effectively, if you avoid open fields and giving AR's the distance.
My filling skills are electronics & engineering at 3 and Shield & Armor Upgrades at 2,
So if you want to follow my footsteps, I suggest Mechanics 3 t least and then some fitting skills so you can fit two shield extenders and armor plate. |

I'll check this out this evening. I know I have Mechanics three and my shield regen and max shield are at 4 I think. So, I should be tanky(ish).

I think the first question you need to ask yourself is how you are going to make your skill points/isk moving forward.
If you want to do it by killing, i would recomend the AR.
So
A kill gives you 50 warpoints.
AR operation III Light weapon sharpshooting II/III Light weapon capacity II Light Weapon rapid Reload II
Weaponry IV/V and whatever suit you are planning on running to II.
Plus defensive skills.
IF warpoints is your game then you need to figure out which way you want to go:
Nanohives give you 20-15 warpoints on use. Nano injectors gives you 60 warpoints on use Drop Uplinks give you 25 warpoints on use.
Nanohives and Nano Injectors use the same skill: Nanocircutry
You will also probably need some survivability skills. |

This is very very similiar to how I was running in previous builds.
My only worry in this build is affording the better equipment. However I have most of the things that you have suggested above, including the tanky skills. Though, I do need to work on Nanocircutry.

Right now, try doing what I do (since it's a beta and you'll have plenty of tries to get it right)
Try several different playstyles (maybe 2 per update)- once you find one you like, go with it (if you find 2 general ones you like, make a hybrid of those- sniper + LAV driver= RAILGUN SNIPER!)
Once you find what you like, mess around with some skills that look like they would be useful- with the random railgun sniper idea, you might want to look at scanning and turret skills. If a skill doesn't seem to help, make a note of it. Also keep other random ideas in mind (with my LAV driver [not sniper, so I don't know how it would work], I found that hacking is useful in case I need to "borrow" an enemy vehicle or take an installation out of commission) Also try writing down what works well
After you've tried everything else, take what you've found and put it together in a test-character.
warning, this will take much longer than it seems- you may even need to wait for future updates like how I'm waiting for artillery turrets to be added |
