A five year roadmap with twenty years of "crazy" ideas to sort through. I'm astounded if not happy to hear the news. Just saw this article posted up by Destructoid, and figured I would share this with everyone else here. It's rather short, but a hopeful message if you ask me. It shows that as always CCP is devoted to New Eden taking care of both their fans and games. Now that is some devotion! Glad to see some developers and publishers actually care (still).
CCP has a five year roadmap for Dust514. |

I imagine by the time we're at the end of the 5 years we'll have our own rep working with the reps from Eve Online to make sure everyone & everything is getting proper consideration and our voice is being heard. |

You see compatibility issues? How do you figure that? CCP was running two separate EVE clients when they made the switch from DX9 to DX10 (right?), not to mention if the PS4 has backwards compatibility they won't even have to create a separate client. |

CCP is building a universe. Platforms are just access points into it. If the PS4 is not viable, they could just as well go PC or, if MS works with them, the Xbox 720 or some other alternate platform.
I have an OUYA pre-ordered, and only wish it had enough power to support Dust.. that would be an ideal platform for a F2P game.

I'm guessing the graphics engine isn't up to the PS3 level though. |

The backwards compatibility is what I'm talking about. Sony hasn't been real forthcoming about details of the PS4 under the guise that they don't want to shift focus from the PS3. Assuming backward compatibility is assuming they are going with similar cell processor technology. Development has been an issue at odds with the PS3 for multi platform games because of this. Sure exclusive titles look great but XBOX has been easier to develop for. I'm not saying DUST won't be on PS4...I'm just saying we will see :) |

Looking forward to PC (if it happens). Not so much for battle controls which sadly enough I find the dual shock controller adequate, but using a proper interface for all the menus/markets/manufacturing would be nice.

It'll be a great little media player and indie console, if nothing else. It's basically what Apple should have done with Apple TV 2 years ago.
Additionally, to think it's a trivial thing to make a new console, is a little amusing. ;) |

this game is confirmed to be intended to outlive the PS3, its a CLIENT not a dvd-rom, compatability shouldnt be an issue as long as the next gen consoles support access to the DUST client. its like EVE Online for the PC, doesnt matter what PC you have, long as it has the minimum reqs to run the game, itll continue running. and with the future compatability that CCP works into their games, i doubt that the next gen consoles will fulfill CCPs visions, refrence below link, or look it up on youtube yourself

Eve is almost 10 years old and still being released. Why would Dust be any different?

Its not about the software. Its about the hardware. If the PS4 uses a cell processor then they will simply be able to emulate most PS3 titles. The PS4 is not going to be designed around having the hardware to support games from both systems if they go in another direction. Sony has made it pretty clear that backward compatability isn't high on their priority list moving forward. If it was then every PS3 would have the additional CPU to run emotion engine from the PS2. The bottom line is that backward compatability is expensive and that expense is passed on to the consumer. People would rather save money than be able to play a 10 year old game on their new console (in most cases lol).
If DUST is already planned for the PS4 than I guess that settles it! |

@Brahma
Actually it will be released this year, barring any unforeseen circumstances. But it will still be improving but the end of those five years. As for the PS4, CCP already said they are still waiting on Sony for the relevant tools needed. |

Thats why they chose the unreal engine over their own in house engine that EVE is build on, Carbon.

i may have been making a wrongful assumption that consoles are anything similar to a PC, but i still cant imagine that a PS4 would be that far different from a PS3 that CCP wouldnt be able to 'hotpatch' dust to be compatible with both, but it does leave you to wonder, what happens during the transition? ps3 players playing against ps4? or ps3 only until enough players have ps4s then ps4s only? ive yet to see a client style game(like WoW or EVE or SC2 or DUST that you download) on a console before, and thusly have not seen the transition to next gen for it. it should prove intresting to see how SONY and CCP handle this task |

Not to mention that Carbon has a ridiculous hardware demand. You only need to look what happened to Incarna back in 2010 when the Jita Riots began. |

from what i understand, carbon is just the name they gave to most of the core programing they have, its not that they created new tech and called it carbon, just took what was applicable to other uses and made it the baseline for building their other projects, including DUST and World of Darkness. |

carbon is CCPs game engine, built from the core of eve code though, incarna, was supposed to be cutting edge for years to come though was the concept/purpose, they were even looking at including Ray Tracing at some point, which currently takes something like 5 minutes to render a single photo |
