Hi,
I had a crash during the game last night and didn't think anything of it and turned the machine off. I turned it on again just now and DUST loaded just fine until I tried to enter my skills menu, then it crashed again (turned the PS3 off, same as last night).
Now it will not turn back on. I've turned the switch at the back off for a few minutes or so and back on, but when i got to power up, the green light only stays green before turning orange for a few seconds and then it all turns off again.
Has DUST broken my PS3 and what should I do?
Regards

This is very worrying. My PS3 is used to be run for very long periods of time as we stream movies through it and it's not uncommon for us to sit down and watch two or three movies in a row.
My PS3 has never crashed before and only started doing so with this game.
I've had a look at the safe mode setup and will try it this evening, but I don't think I'll be playing this game again until CCP confirm this is resolved.
I think someone from CCP should say something about this. |

Well..... unless someone from CCP (unlikely I know) posts in this thread with some advice or whatever, then I'll be making a post in General.
I can't see them taking issue with that as the header of this forum is Technical Support/Bugs.
I'd hardly call breaking my PS3 a bug and if they don't help me then there isn't a lot of support going on either.
I hate this crap.... and I don't mean the breaking of my PS3 (though I dont like that either), but how can no one respond. If it's been reported before and no one has had a response.......... not good!

Ty,
Not sure what to do following your message.
It sounds as though this can't be fixed thus what is there to 'risk' trying the safe mode?
Unless this thing can be fixed, but other than thinking it's something to do with overheating, how can I describe the problem to someone?

Right.....
Safe mode doesn't work.
The system turns itself off about 1 second after trying to turn it on. Thus I do not have time to even get into safe mode.
Any other ideas?
I know nothing about Consoles..... are they something I can take to some shop somewhere and get repaired?

Man..... the Mrs is going to hit the roof!
She hates these games and now, no films, no Tv series, and I might have to buy another console........ NOT GOOD. |

To be honest, after looking on You tube I'm kinda at this point.
Almost all of what I read referred to the system overheating and the soldering joints breaking.
There are two very popular videos that show how to fix it. Now I'm used to taking PC's apart but DAMN, there are a lot of screws in a PS3!!!
I'm really not sure what to do. If this is a common fault with Playstations then surely there is a responsibility from Sony to repair or from developers to ensure that don';t create games that overheat on systems that they know are likely to do so.

One thing that did make my laugh in my moments of despair.
It seems many people agree that DUST can cause the system to overheat...... sadly I think they are refering to the messy kinda and not the game.
Seriously though, after playing DUST and having the livingroom door closed (to noisy) my Mrs complains that the room is baking....... kinda all makes sense now.
What I don't understand is how the complete melt down has only affected a few of us.

It's a ****** situation, but one I can't do anything about.
The thing that worries me is that even if i brave a repair, such as the ones on youtube, where you completely stip the system, with the heat that this game/my machine generates, all I am really doing is exasperating the problem to a point where I will need to buy a new one at some point.
So, is the real question; Will CCP be able to create a build that is less demanding than the current one?

Thanks for all the replies...
I'm certainly feeling less devastated than I was previously.
One thing that is confusing me is some of the terminology that people are using.
The two You Tube videos I've seen show them stripping the system right out.... all parts taken away. Clearing the old compound, heating the motherboard a little then heating the CPU/GPU much more, letting it cool and then re-applying new compound paste.
Is this process the longer term fix and is it what is referred to as re-flowing?

Jax
*edit*
Cranium, I have a fat PS3, no idea on HD size or anthing and have had it a fair few years and I do not ever recall clearing out vents or anything.
other than movies, I very rarely use it.
However, There is rarely a time when playing DUST that the fan is no on overdrive. I wasn't aware that this was not normal behavious as I don't really play games on it. I just figured that DUST was a demanding game and put strain on the system............little did I know. |

Isn't that acheived when they heat the entire motherboard?
Disappointing to know that going to all that trouble will only be a temporary measure. |

Yeah... true, but I kinda half want to try it now just to know that I can do it.
Also, if I can get it to work for a bit and it doesn't last and I get a new one, I can always re-do it and shove it in the bedroom and stream wireless to it there.

YAY............. it worked.
Played a quick game last night and the fan was a lot quieter and ran less, so I guess the new thermal paste and a clean out has done it good.
No idea how long it will last though...............
