So I decided to dump all my starter SP into the new nova knifes....bad idea >_< Visually they're very cool since you dual wield them, the problem is that you have to charge them. When charging the nova knife, you can't sprint or jump without breaking the charge. This means you have to first get directly on top of them, charge, and strike, all the while hoping that they don't simply backpedal away from you, as you take continuous fire from them. Also since they're their own weapon now, it's much harder to switch from gun to knife in the heat of combat.
As is, nova knifes are very disappointing. I'll do some more testing tonight, but as is, they've left a very bad taste in my mouth. Any one else try them yet? |

Maybe you should try less charging and more sneaky sneaky stuff.
Do some rogue ish back stabing with a light and see if that suits you better.
But yeah if back staby **** doesnt work either then yeah thats a problem. |

By charge I mean you have to hold down the trigger to charge them, and keep it held down until you release it for the attack. |

I haven't seen much good use, Fused grenades kill me before any distance is closed.
They are charged and let go like said and it might be difficult if they move right out of the area in time with the knife. and to recharge before you take them down would be some hell of nice timing. |

Shotguns do it WAY better. As it stands, you have to be really lucky to get up on people and kill them, since they have to be completely still to hurt them. |

Not that I'm in any hurry to spec in knifing, but I would imagine there will be a proto Nova knife crowd. They'll have (by suit and SP) an incredibly low sig radius, high scan radius, and ninja around the battlefield sneaking up on people as a profession.
You just dont have the SP and module investment yet to make it worthwhile. |

Bearing in mind that the Skills make the damage Stack up.
the Protoype Viziam (maybe Ishukone) Nova Knife has a 0.5 second charge time and 190 damage.
That's enough to kill a scout suit in one! easy! the bonuses from the skill requirements alone make this very powerful if used well.
As always militia and basic are pretty useless unless you have all level V skills.
you gotta have advanced or prototype.
example:
Scout type II using modules to increase scan strength and range while reducing signature. equipped a M209 Assault Sub, Nova Knife and Nanohives
there's you ninja killer. stealth around people on the edge of their radar, then swoop in with a quick spray and slash, then off again.
of course it's speculation as I have not unlocked the Scout II yet but I can see this being a plan. |

I'm not talking about the damage, the stats are fine. It's actually HOW the knife works. Basically, using the knife eliminates your mobility, which you NEED in order to get kills with it, since if your opponent simply strafes or backpedals, you'll miss and have to charge up for another swipe as they're shooting you.
I'll repeat, the actual WAY you use the knife seems counterproductive to the whole, stab him in the face process. |

I hacked an objective while a fight for another one was goind on, and I sat there with the knife out. Some moron drives up in an LAV and starts to re-take the objective. I crouch walked behind him and let him have it; the knife removed all of his shield and 90% of his armor. I finished him with a quick melee, and then I got sniped... |

First things first, you should be able to attack with them using R1. It feels REALLY awkward using R3 to use your primary weapon, especially one you have to hold down the button to charge. |

they are terrible weapons compared to rail gun technology. energy usage is too high and you have to discharge heat constantly. |

One of my most satisfying assists today came from the use of my Nova Knives. You aren't going to get anywhere with them unless you get the drop on your opponent, in which case killing them outright or wounding them badly is child's play. Took an Assault suit down to 10 armor with one strike. If you train up your melee skills, you can boost it even beyond that. |

I still think that there will be a few people that get their personal kicks by ninja knifing. Apparently there are a few of those sickos within the dev team, enough to make an avenue for that to happen. These won't be high kill count people, they will often quietly sneak into an objective, take it, silently kill a red defender (as a previous poster did).
I have not played FPS games before this, but I have watched others quite a bit. Nothing gives more wood than a knife kill, in gaming ..stuff. Looking at the new skill tree and module additions, stealth knife hunting has a future. |

I think the whole point of the Nova Knives now is for stealth; why would you even THINK of running into oncoming enemy fire now when you know you're going to die really quick. Just shoot them with the hip-fire for God's sake.... |

For all the dev effort that went into a chargable knife, I'd sure like to hear how this mechanic came to pass. |

If you are going to put it in a weapon slot, you should control it with the weapon attack button. Especially if you have to charge it.
edit: Or you could leave it as the crappy R3 button and allow throwing of a fully charge knife with R2. :) |

Well, that and a machine pistol with an extended barrel and magazine so that I could drop cloak, pour an entire magazine into my target(s), cloak up again, and run away. I'm normally about average in FPSes, but being invisible gives me a bit of an unfair edge. |

There is my 5 notes about nova knifes
1) Dont know how knifes working, i mean it can penetrate shield or armor or just doing about 200 dmg/ per charge overall ? cause with 200 dmg , and max skill you coudnt kill anything better then militia stuff on 1 charge, more charge are so difficult when target moving 2) hand to hand skill now dont upgrade knife dmg ? What about myofibril ? Just bonus melee dmg, but is still knifes melee ? or sideram handheld weapon- - which is relate to optimal skills which is funny 3) cannot use charge knife in sprint is annoying, cause you cannot improve your base ms (by kinetic modules, you can improve only sprint speed), and most of assault and logis dropsuit are slower than scout only by 0.5ms, they can easly go back and shoot you down 4) knife attack animation looks like dual attack, but really dont know if dmg is aplied 2 times 5) it can be some info about dmg you doing include your skills (i can see only base dmg with weapons in dropsuit fitting window) |
