I look at this two ways;Yeah, they aren't doing much advertising of the game, but you have to ask yourself why?
Maybe it's because they figure, why do mass advertising on a game that isn't even finished yet?Maybe they are hard at work getting their crap together so that they don't have to patch the game within the first few days of launch, like 90% of shooters today. If this is the case, then I applaud them for that.
Secondly, maybe there's something in their deal with Sony stating that Sony will do all of the advertising, meaning that Sony will bear the majority of the cost to advertise the game. While this game will be connected to EVE,the one thing that EVE has going for it is that it's subscription based.Technically, even though Dust is F2P and is microtransaction based, there was a mathematical potential for Dust to not make one penny off of players. While people have spent money on AUR and the Merc Pack, there's pretty much no way that they will make nearly anything close to what they would've made had it been a $60 game.
So back to my point,If Sony is in charge of marketing and advertising this game, you can bet that they will do the absolute minimum considering that the short returns just won't be there, yet making Dust not very economically viable. Now I think that they are banking on long term returns through micro transactions, that will carry over into the next console generation.
If they can get a 50k+ people to spend an average of $5 per week for,say seven years(the supposed time it takes to fully upgrade a character's skills),well,it's a huge win for them then,to the tune of $13,000,000/per year with a grand total of $91,000,00.Let's just assume that Sony takes half of that cut just for CCP being on PSN,well,$6.5 million per year isn't a COD haul by any stretch, but for a game that's F2P that Sony doesn't really have to do much work for,not bad for them.

Veigar Mordekaiser wrote:Microtransaction games are often extremely profitable, so I'm not sure I see your point... at all... My point was in regards to your question.Try reading it next time.BTW,this is the first time that a we are seeing micro transactions in an MMO shooter on console,so I wouldn't extrapolate whatever statistics that you have into Dust.

General Stonewall wrote:statically F2P MMOs make way more money in general than P2P MMOs do so the guys above doesn't make much sense or least imo it doesn't i know you F2P over P2P MMOs making more money is debatable but statics don't lie at least majority of the time anyway . micro transactions are perfect way for them to make their money back but with them jacking prices i don't see myself buying anymore aur until they fix their major bug problems so new build which i would like too see but if its going to cause more problems then no . but i would like them to fix majority of their problems like the lag and invalids along with a few other problems before they do anything else . until CCP does that not getting another red cent out of me .
Please name them and show numbers, but regardless of that,I'm not even disputing which one makes more money anyway.Part of what you aren't taking into account is that you can pretty much bet that Sony has their hands in the pocket of CCP's micro transaction earnings, which is why I said that short term,it's not huge profits, but long term it is.
If COD comes out every year,as it already does, and makes one billion dollars in 16 days like MW3,then how do you figure that Dust comes close to that?Remember, this IS a shooter first, and in a gaming space that is very fickle.

It isn't a coincidence that so many MMOs are going this route. People don't like paying monthly fees. They do like paying small amounts for cosmetic stuff, convenience stuff, and new content. If you read about the musings of MMO developers on this issue, it's clear that F2P is the future of these games.
Thank you for following up.Again though, this isn't a regular MMO,nor is it on PC,so the established model for F2P on PC may not be the same for console shooters.Just something to take into account.
