Just our of curiosity, if CCP had to decide between (1) high res visuals with continuing lag and time-out issues or (2) slightly lower res visuals which totally eliminated lag, ran at a higher FPS, and improved overall playability, which would you prefer? I know some people have problems with the current visuals, but look at games like MindCraft that opt for playability over visuals. Personally, I think I would gladly sacrifice a bit on visuals if DUST was able to live up to its hype in playability. |

I wouldn't care if this looked like Star Wars Battlefront II if it was half as fun. Which it is. In the end, graphics only take a game so far. Its the gameplay that counts.
Look at UnCharted 3 for example. The gameplay is fantastic. It helps that the visuals are so great too. Now look at MineCraft. Cubes, and yet the game is so popular Now look at Ace Combat Assualt Horizon. Fantastic graphics, but sucky gameplay.

It's called Minecraft.
Anyway, it's a FPS game. If it doesn't perform well people won't play it. Dying to lag or frame rate issues or whatever is unacceptable. |

Star Wars BF1 was better IMO. I think Gameplay always> graphics.
I wouldn't care if this game looked like star fox if it had breath taking content and gameplay. |

It doesn't matter how face-meltingly good the graphics get, it'll only ever be client side issues that result from it (poor frame rate) not server issues such as lag.
And while gameplay should be the main priority, never underestimate the power of eye candy in attracting and maintaining players. Basically, as much shiny stuff as possible without compromising gameplay.
(Also minecraft may not have much in the way of polygons, or hi-res textures, but it is clean and sharp and generally nice to look at - so it actually has pretty good graphics) |

You've seen the high Poly models right? They are top of industy examples of stunning art. Just look at polycount or zbrush central or Google dust weapons.
The question is, do you want dust to be a 8 gb download while in beta ? It might even be bigger. Just be glad you only have to download 3 gb for now. |

I tend to not notice the graphics after a short while of playing. I know from playing COD, etc. that if I actually stop and look I'm shocked at the quality.
So, game play every time! |

Most true gamers will agree:
Gameplay > graphics
Honestly while the graphics in Dust are borderline Playstation 2 graphics (maybe even worse in some cases) I really don't care too much. Sure it would be nice to have everything nicely polished and running smoothly, but if the choice was to have polished and not run smoothly, then to hell with graphics!

Well, don't forget the updates (which cannot be done in the background). Not only is the game ~3GB, but there is almost 3GB in updates as well, and the updates cannot be paused so the PS3 is a slave to downloading until they are done.
I was pretty ticked to have finally downloaded the installation package, only to find out I had to download the biggest update in gaming history (well, MSG4 might have Dust beat here).
So yeah, if the game was 8GB and the updates were 3GB, that would be truly awful.

Gameplay>visuals I might be the only person on the planet that feels this way,but Uncharted 3 played like garbage to me.I think the controls of those games are really lacking. Not that they are unresponsive to your input, rather they feel just sluggish overall.I know that they were going for a more realistic feel with the character movement, but for me,it just takes me completely out of the game. And on top of that, all of the enemies were bullet sponges.
So with all of that said,I have no interest in The Last Of Us.Controls for me mean EVERYTHING in a game.If the controls suck,I won't even bother with it,no matter how good the story is supposed to be.
As for Dust, the same hold true.I couldn't care less about graphical fidelity if there's a ton of lag and the controls are crap.Imo,they still need to fix the weapon swap system and make it more intuitive, and for god's sake, would they please increase the maximum turning speed of the player! |

PC gamers would not trade performance for graphics, which is the point of the thread. Very few people who play competitive FPS games would tolerate poor frame rate or whatever for long, PC gamers or console gamers both. |

The updates replace a lot of content. the total size on your harddrive is about 3-4 Gb. Once the final build is out and it won't be huge test server patches for an update, *other than expansions* The graphics will get better when the textures are saved in a larger format. This will be most evident in the normal maps. Also once the os4 comes out they can just up the poly count using the new graphics tech they showed off at fanfest this year. Up to 2 million polygons in a scene running in real time on a mid line GPU. Up to 20 million polys.
Actully last I heard this was on track to be put into eve online by this winter expansion. |

um... most PC gamers turn the graphics down as much as possible during competitive play... you're crazy, it's the console people who freak out over graphics. This game allready looks better than warhawk did and it's not even done. |

Pretty good graphics? ATM is it among the worst of all PS3 games, even those that came out in 2006/7.
But as I said before, I don't really care (to an extent of course, as you pointed out) but just looking at the character in the "fitting room" makes me laugh every time. For this example, it doesn't even come to par with legacy PS2 graphics.

I brought this topic up because I've been running into lag problems, invalid fittings, and being kicked from games alot recently. Also, since I've been in the beta, there has been alot of CCP's time spent on tweaking screen visuals such as the loading reticule alone. Just wanted to give CCP something to think about to show gamers wouldn't mind if CCP worked purely on core functionality (UI) rather than constantly tweaking visuals. |

PC gamers wouldn't have to trade performance for graphics because they're not on a 7 year old system with limited capabilities (if they're 'serious' about gaming). If the PS3 had gone through the same evolution in processing power as the PC did through hardware upgrades, it would be stellar. You just can't get around the fact that in terms of hardware, this is a very old system when you take the rate of technological advancement into account.
Gameplay > graphics any day of the week, to a certain extent. That being said, there's some developers that can really do some magic on the PS3, we'll just have to wait until full release to see if CCP is one of them. |

For me, graphics are at a point where I don't care (sometimes even notice) if it's getting better and has been there for 5-10 years (minus the not noticing bit). If you ask me, this could look like PS2 games, albeit not the 'photorealism' sought for then, but handpainted or cell shading stuff. |
