"New build due end of the month" "New PS3 Slim to launch September 25th with Dust 514 bonus content" "Dust 514 at TGS" "Open beta 2012" "AUR changes September 24th".
If you connect all the dots, you'll realize something big is coming SOONGäó, something involving a new build, an open beta, an influx of new players, and a big shiny announcement to glue it all together. However, the announcement should come first, not the event. My question, is where is the announcement? You've only got three more days til the 25th CCP, you choking?
My point is, we need news. We as beta testers, need to prepare for what's coming. Also, you as a company have to create some new hype, because honestly, there is very little hype about Dust 514 right now. If you announce your big event on the same day that it happens, how many people do you think will attend? If I told you I today, that I was going to throw a party yesterday, do you think you would come?
News CCP, it's good for the community, and it's good for your wallet.
Edit #1: Good job CCP, you released some news! Unfortunately those of us that are playing for free are completely unaffected by it. I hope this doesn't mean you're planning on the next wave of users playing on Precursor, because quite plainly, it's unimpressive and not much fun after about half an hour.
Edit #2: Forum activity is quite low, possibly due to lack of interest in the game? Maybe the lack of information provided has something to do with this? *hint, hint*
Don't get me wrong CCP, I like surprises, but being completely left in the dark leaves very little room for excitement.
Edit #3: A point made by Gnaar Amarr, which I have expanded upon.
The new PS3 Super Slim is set to launch with Dust 514 bonus content, so it's a simple task to infer that it will also include beta access.
Now, there have been tons upon tons of reports of system crashes, hard freezes, soft freeze, infinite load screens, various other possibly system damaging bugs, all of these made in times of both E3, and Precursor. There have even been reports of people having to physically unplug their PS3 because the hard shutdown (hold the button for 30 seconds) didn't work, and as well there have been reports of outright system failures ("My PS3 is BORKED man!").
This is all important, because if the new PS3 Super Slim does launch with access to Precursor, tons of people are going to be reporting all over the web "My PS3 came with the game that broke it!" "I got the YLOD from Dust 514!" and various things of the like.
Launching the new PS3 with Precursor would be terrible for CCP and Sony because competitors would say "Hey look, Sony can't deliver a sturdy product, and CCP breaks your system right out of the box!" It would be terrible marketing for both companies.
Edit #4: With only -20- hours left on the clock, can CCP push out a decent build for the incoming beta testers? Can they prove to the community that $30 of bonus Dust 514 content made the new PS3 Super Slim a worthy investment? No one knows just yet! Find out tomorrow on the next episode of Terrible Marketing Skills (Level 1)!
Edit #5: In only 3 and a half hours it will be September 25th in Iceland, and it will be 7(eastern)/8(central)/9(mountain)/10(pacific) and a half hours in the U.S. So CCP, are you ready for all the new-comers with PS3 Super Slims to play for an hour and leave due to crashes, freezes, and "Server Is Full"? |

We as beta players already have the skills needed to land on our feet with a running start. There's no reason to ruin the surprise, suspense, and whatever awesomeness they have tucked away for everyone. |

Yet if you ask what EVE most people get a dreamy look and say "that space game?". I'm confused about how CCP can suck so bad at market Dust 514, when EVE effectively advertises itself. |

If this new build is supposed to dramatically improve the game, then all those that have given up with Precursor/E3 wont know something big is coming, because CCP has said nothing. We as beta testers are supposed to test the game, find the bugs, and suggest the fixes, that is our primary function. However, we also create the hype, we tell our friends about this epic game we are testing (within the bounds of the NDA) and give them our extra beta keys. We are as much an advertising group as we are a testing group. |

First off, the devs can play any build they want, as it is only distribution through PSN that is being run through Sony QA.
Secondly, CCP doesn't necessarily know exactly when Sony gets through testing a build. IIRC the last couple times they announced only an 'expected sometime next week' kind of announcement.
Thirdly, CCP has said multiple times that they're going to grow DUST in the same way as EVE, slowly at start and continuously rather than the typical flash-mob followed by slow decline. |

Still, I'd like at LEAST a teaser trailer. I just rewatched the E3 video and got all excited again. We need something like that, a teaser to get us theorycrafting about what they will put in the next build. Also, an announcement that says, "Sometime this week, you'll see a patch, as soon as it clears Sony."
Here's my question, they submit to Sony and Sony tests it for a week and either accepts it or rejects it. Doesn't this process seem meaningless when WE'RE the testers and Sony let Precursor through with the freeze of death during gameplay that forces me to pull the power cord to restart my system? Why doesn't Sony just wait until Open Beta or Release before doing their whole certification process? Or just assign a small team to consistently test Dust on a weekly basis? I think Sony is soaking in money from CCP considering most games only have to be certified once for release and once for major patches (barring failures). Loosen up Sony and give us our build! |

First time I heard about EVE it was two years old. I heard about Dust three months before beta started. I'd say that's a good increase in marketing.
I don't see what the hype is about. We are testers. This doesn't give us any special privileges IMO |

(and all the other DUST marketing replies)
Most games aren't marketed very heavily while still in the BETA phase, especially one which wants to draw in as many casuals in as possible, who happen to be the people who say 'Aww man sh*t graphics, this game is obviously sh*t, COD is sooooo much better, why are there no kill streaks, my online name is xxxSiP3REliTexxxx, and my vocabulary extends up to words with two syllables' (translated to proper English of course, so we can understand it) (and ok maybe i over exaggerated a bit) . They also wont be notice the fact that the game play has BETA written all over it (literally and metaphorically), and think that what they are seeing is the finished item. (ive seen allot of comments like that already on videos that are already up on youtube)
What im trying to say is that DUST's TMG wont be very kind on beta footage and gameplay, hence the minimal marketing.
This game is going to have a long shelf life, with re-builds and new builds and tweaks and fixes all the way along, like EVE, if the marketing mill (next door to the rumor mill) starts a few months late the game will still be around when the casuals get a whiff of it
Also talking of the rumor mill, 'connect all the dots' (from the first post) does that just mean putting all the rumors together and see what gargantuan behemoth of a future you can contrive |

Well, let's see. CCP is only a small, privately owned company whose HQ is in a country is about the size of an island in the north Atlantic where the population is smaller than it's subscriber base of 400,000+ players.
Resources are limited and they also have to devote some resources to maintaining Eve Online.
So far, they are doing just fine for a company so limited and small with only a few offices here and there around the world. Word of mouth and in game events appears to be the most effective form of PR so far. |

Remember eve didnt have a much of marketing mass early and EA tried its best to shut it down with buying westwood for its earth beyond game which they found unable to maintain and shut it down which resulted one of eve's first boost of players, many other scifi players since then have migrated when thier newest craze has left them wanting more but sequel seemingly evaporate.
Freespace, Homeworld, Nexus, the list goes on and more recently STO and TOR (you would not belvie the nubmer of comments saying how much better eve space combat is over TOR) |

EA used to be good up until they got money hungry around 2005ish. Now they just need to die out so CCP and other great gaming companies can have a shot at the big leagues. |

I know right? I wish I waited to buy bf3 instead of waiting at gamestop for midnight release, now that they released the premium edition for $60 that includes EVERYTHING!, thankfully I didn't buy any dlc or go premium and end up spending $110 on a friggin game lol. |

At least Microsoft is not as bad, almost every studio they gobbeled up has gotten better, or gone thier seperate ways and was given back thier old property, IE FASA devs got Mechwarrior Back, Bungie was able to walk away. Crimson Skies was given back to its developer as well. Bunch of others, only major one on my list of game studios devoured and not done well with was Esemble studios responsible for Age of Stratagey Games such as Age of Mythology, Age of Empires and Age of Nations and several others. |
