For months I enjoyed playing the beta, even with the little problems everywhere, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Then came the last build.
So here are my reasons, in order of importance:
- Ambush maps (i.e.: random spawn, no goal) 90% of the time. I hate it. I am not a thumb twitcher, so I prefer support roles, but they are useless in that setting (in theory they should not be, but they are in practice).
- Starting matches mid-way, or worse; at the end. More often than not on the losing side.
- Low skill point rewards (for a beta), especially with the new skill structure. I don't mind slow progression in the final release, I know I will be in for the long run, but in the beta I know my toons will be wiped sooner or later, so grinding for skill points is not acceptable.
- Instability. I can accept a lot of it knowing it is a beta, but at some point, when added to the other problems, it starts to weigh.
I decided to post because 5 of the 6 other dust players that I know IRL have also stopped for very similar reasons (and reason #1 always seems to be at the top).
So why did you stop playing? |

1. In this build they want to test how ambush maps work. Deal with it. 2. People will rage quit from the losing team. So this is what happens when you join a game mid-way or near the end. This is common in pretty much EVERY online FPS game. However, on this note I would suggest that an option to wait for a new game to start should be added, instead of whining about a mechanic they can't fix. 3. Lower skill points. This is how it would be in the final release, so they need to test and balance the SP rewards for kills, wins, etc. Again, this is not your personal playground, this is testing the game. 4. Instability. Finally something regarding actual beta issues. Stability should be something that is worked on. I can only hope that it is a constant work in progress during the entire beta.
You're not supposed to enjoy playing the beta. Not really. You're supposed to be testing the game for flaws and issues so that the developers can release the game with as few bugs and problems as possible. You're supposed to report the problems and issues you are having.
This is not my first beta, I know what beta is about, but you are missing the point of a public beta (wether closed or open): people are not paid to play. Their willingness to play through crap can only bring them so far before they just give up, which is starting to happen. You say "deal with it"? I am; I stopped playing and I am posting why.
Your points are all valid, but you're not telling me anything I didn't know. The important part is that despite it all, I stopped playing because it started becoming a chore. |

I am not doubting that they are working on all these points, they are nothing new. My post was not to propose solutions, that's for the feedback thread. I just wanted to put out there the reasons, completely subjective, why I haven't played much with the latest build, mostly because I found out that I was not alone. There are and will always be people that stop playing games for any number of reasons (beta or not), but I don't consider myself an easy quitter. I have played EVE for a long time and I have participated in other betas, all of which I stayed with until the release. I still play a match or two on a regular basis to see if something has changed, but nothing like the previous builds. I could say a lot about each point I brought forward (especially the random spawning), and I could mention many other things that are wrong, but this is not so much a rant about the specifics as it is about the global feel of the game right now. And it doesn't feel good to me, mostly because of these points. |
