The "Problem"
So,
if you've been paying attention to all the updates being worked on for future builds, you'll know that things like hit detection and general shooter mechanics are going to (hopefully) be completely revamped and improved. That means that it will (again, hopefully) be much easier for people to kill each other... and die...
...Even more so for people sporting scout suits. Things like strafe speed, ADS sensitivity, hit detection due to latency, and others (that I can't think of at the moment) are all being tweaked and worked on. And it's these things that, I believe, are giving scout suits an "inflated" survivability rate. It sort of augments their greatest strength; their mobility.
So basically when the gun game improves, I foresee a dramatic rise in the number of dead scouts (if they continue to be used the way they are currently) because they are made of glass. A scout will drop in seconds from a militia assault rifle, even down range. Land a few head shots on a scout and they drop nearly instantly. And all this can be applied to every dropsuit type, although to a lesser degree the slower the suit is.
The Solution
If everything goes as planned and the shooting mechanics become top-shelf and everyone is dropping like flies, one thing that would be really cool and increase the survivability of certain people, would be the ability to slide. Sliding would be used while sprinting by pressing triangle (the crouch button). When you slide, you maintain top speed while at the same time, making yourself a smaller target. If used correctly, sliding would increase the survivability of those who are in the right postion.
Scouts would benefit the most from it as they are the fastest and lightest. Assault and logistics would benefit slightly less but it would still be useful. Heavy suits probably wouldn't even be able to use the ability because the amount of friction (due to large surface area and great mass) would immediately stop their pathetic top speed.
In order for this to not be abused, you can put restrictions like an accuracy penalty while sliding (or even take away the ability to shoot while sliding). Or maybe it takes a second for an Assault or Logistics suit to recover and rebalance after sliding while the scout suit can recover relatively quickly.
Overall
I think this would be a pretty sweet game mechanic to have. It's functional, badass and lets people earn virtual style points in intense cover to cover firefights. |

I support sliding rolling diving and climbing and mechanics like these if its properly balance I think they would add a new element to combat, amd would be pretty vool but only if balanced right.
I would also like better feel to movement overall, the screen vibrating as you walk around and bits of hud sway, and natural gun sway would make the experince more immersive.
I think a major point in balancing movement option like sliding rolling and diving is to have stagger stagger would be caused by being shot and would be based of bullet damage to suit weight, so light suits are more easly staggered. I think stagger could slow player down shake their hud a bit and have a hi change to cancel any combat movement a players trying to do. |

Perhaps the scout suit should be one where people should not expect to go toe-to-toe with other dropsuits and win. Maybe scout suits should be about cloaking (eventually), about recon (hopefully via scanning devices of various kinds), and so on. So it could be that there isn't an issue that even needs solving, and that scout suits will find their niche without such a feature.
I have had bad experiences with this kind of thing in other FPS games. I would hate to see Dust turn into a game where everyone is dolphin-diving, or firefights are about people diving back and forth, and etc. Diving looks cool in cinematics. Diving is okay when the AI is doing it in a FPS like Borderlands 2. Diving would have the potential to be really terrible as a mechanic in Dust, and I wonder if the payoff of making scouts able to get into a shooting match with assault suits is really worth the effort. |

If it was balanced and limited and could easly be inturpted by something like stagger so beople cant just jump all over the place and abuse it. Also if CCP puts some effort into it they could make it all flow together well |

since i play a scout a slide/ slimbing mechanic would be awesome, my personal specialty is getting to a nul cannon before any one els and hacking it, so a slide would just make me a bad ass :D i really hope they put it in. |

To what end, though? As a "fix" for the "problem" of scouts not being able to stand in front of someone in an assault/heavy suit and win the fight it'd either be ridiculous or it'd be useless. Either you can dive around like Max Payne on speed, or you can't and the fight will be over without it being a factor.
I mean, in some games sliding is fine. Sliding into cover in certain FPS games, slide-kicking people to death through magic I guess in FEAR games, etc, sometimes sliding works. But for Dust? Seems pointless. With the hit detection issues the game has as-is, and the fact that strafing speed is actually being decreased next build, I think trying to make the gunplay of Dust about mobility and jumping/diving around a lot isn't the direction they want to go with this. |

You assume that dust will all ways have bad hit detection and lag issues, they will fix those and then?
I dont see this a fix to the scout problem but a way for players tobuse a new mechanic to give them more options on the field, I would want fire fights to be abput who moves faster but having this as a underlying mechanic thats simply apart of gameplay wouldnt be bad. It would open new fields for players to use and experment with and it would allow players to interact with their enviroment more and relay more on getting into position rather than strafing that will be extemely important once strafing is made more difficult.
So I think by adding combat movements it would give player a new option to use in battle, I woundt want it to be used to turn fights into a who can move faster thing, but if it was balanced pretty well I think it would give people a option to get into position. It could greatly enhance gameplay providing new options, specialtys, and tactices to the game. So long as CCP puts limits on it to keep it from being abused then this could be a great system that allows people to immerse themself into dust. |

I did just have a thought though... you know what'll happen with sliding if it was a thing in-game? You will almost undoubtedly get people who purposely run straight at you just to slide under you and see if you can trip people up. Or it would get used in very unrealistic circumstances like walking up behind a sniper, failing to kill him, sniper gets out sidearm or start waving a knife around like a useless you-know-what and the person starts sliding around trolling you.
I think if it was just to become a thing it should require you to be running as fast as your character can (forgot the word) first. |

Sorry about the poor spelling did that on my phone
But I do think that by adding combat movements and by allow players of all class use them it could open a realm of possibiltys. Dont think of it as a way to dodge bullet thing of it as a way to get into a position to take a shot or start a fight in a better spot. If it was balanced and limited it could be a valid mechanic in game that gives a interesting element to combat.
But you assume that dust hit detection and lag will all ways be at this level, it wont? Also once strafing is brought down to earth a bit, providing other movement options is vital, but lets stick to CCP example of possibiltys dont limit it to the scout suit let all suits use this simple base the distance of the combat movement off how fast they were goin when they started it.
If it was limited with simple things like staminia requirements, movement requirements, short start up and end animation, along with my stagger idea it would be pretty hard to use movements like these in the fray.
For example only allowing sliding when your character has been sprinting for three seconds and having it end in a short animation where you start out in couch position would be useful.
As for diving make it so you have to be standing still for 2 seconds to use it before it can be used combined with a short animation to start and as your character pullls himself of the ground diving would be impractical in combat sitiation.
Things like that could make movements a valid part of the game that are both fun and fair. |
