Skills
One thing I've found, is it's *much* better to get a lot of essential skills first to at least 3 or so, than going straight for IV or V in one certain skill to get that extra 5% bonus to damage or hp/shield etcs. Getting Weaponry to 3 is easy and a big one to get , gives you a 15% damage increase on any handheld weapon, no matter whether it's light/heavy etc. Instead of trying to get it to 4 right away you can get Armor Upgades to 2 or 3 and get yourself an extra 10-15% armor on any dropsuit you use. You could also get a couple ranks in electronics/engineering skills to make fitting gear easier or to increase shield regen 5-10%, without a ton of sp investment.
Fittings
Also, some things that help if you are just trying a certain weapon/equipment combo and just want to see how it works etc, don't forget to try even militia PG or CPU upgrades. They have no cpu/pg cost and give bonuses to one or the other, making it easier to try out a combo without having to invest heavily in skills or upgrades etc.
One thing I'd recommend doing that I wish I had done sooner is putting the 40k sp into Grenades for the Locus grenade. It takes 9cpu and 2pg, freeing up a few points to cram something on you want to try, combining that with the pg/cup upgrades will give you a lot more fitting options for testing gear. It is the same damage as a militia grenade, but you can hold 3 instead of 2 grenades and they only cost around 1400 apiece I think. Just one map, whether you win or lose, would replace the money you spend to buy 50 of these grenades. Practice a lot with grenades, you can hold down the grenade button to prime it before you throw so it explodes earlier after you toss it. With proper timing you can even get them to explode in mid-air, meaning you can more easily hit enemies behind cover, or who have a tactical height advantage like up on a walkway or building etc.
Help the team out and get faster sp gains!
For an easy flow of warpoints to help get more sp, one thing everyone should do is make a dropsuit setup that uses the militia uplink. Spawn points are crucial in any map, but especially Ambush and such. Drop a few uplinks and hives early in the match then maybe one or 2 times later as you spawn. Not only will it help out your team immensely, if you have an uplink/nanohive combo you can drop 2 of each even with just a militia setup. This gives you a good chance of random +25wp from spawns and +10wp from resupplying friendlies, even after you switch out to other gear. They do not poof upon your death or switching to a different dropsuit setup, so you can even use your own uplinks/nanohives after switching!
One last thing, consider using a militia smg instead of the scrambler if you want a much deadlier close range option! They don't have the range the scrambler does, but they have an incredibly fast fire rate and do 20dmg per bullet. They have a 64 round clip for the militia version or 80 round clip for the basic smg that costs around $4k or so. And as others have said, dont' forget to buy one of each of the militia weapons and modules/etc and try them out to see how they would fit your playstyle and fittings.
I've only played a couple weeks now but these are a few things that I've found that help, have fun!!
