N00b to N00b, as some will say, then again I don't care what others say as long as they die before I do...
I'm only in the game +-2 weeks myself, and while I am getting the hang of it there was a learning curve. (personally my last fps was something like castle wolvenstein; on dos and I totally sucked at it iirc...)
Alot of good advice has already been given; team up (not necessairy but could be helpfull), take cover and don't fight a battle you can't win (as in don't go running towards a tank with a submachinegun etc.). Also take time to experiment builds if you're not sure what to play or try out some of the builds already mentioned above or in other posts, they are mostly either well balanced or very task specific, but always decent builds.
I can only give you some advice on playing sniper class.
move, take cover, check surroundings, crouch, aim, shoot, kill, get the frak out of there and move to another spot.... then start over.
That's how I decided to go. If you can, try to get 2/3 kills from a 'very' good spot but make sure you check the surroundings when you 'nest' yourself in. Also NEVER stay too long in 1 place, since people like me will first go after the snipers as to secure their surroundings and then go for the infantry kills. I almost never go beyond 3/4 kills but since the game moves quite fast I often move after only 1 or 2 kills. Check your surroundings after every kill and decide if it is safe to take another kill or if it is time to move on.
When there are objectives in play I try to place myself there where I can A) secure an already taken objective by killing appraoching baddies or B) where I can take out as many red dots as possible arround an objective so my team can secure it; whilest I'm still taking out approaching baddies.
Even though some say snipping is easy, and thus for 'N00bs' (seriously ??), imo it actually isn't... but that's something you'll learn soon enough iff you go in that direction.
I can't really give any decent advice about builds, but I could explain mine, just in case it'd help you/ give you ideas.
-dropsuit: dragonfly (from the merc pack, which I do suggest you should buy if you can since it is quite helpfull in the beginning, but not a necessity by far, but there are already enough threads about that subject) -riffle: Farside, but I still haven't tried out some of them, it just feels good for the moment. -sidearm: toxin ID_CD9 (merc pack), but I hardly ever use it, though it could save you more then once... -grenades (just in case you need to 'panic kill' an up-close enemie, throw them all and start shooting (j/k) ..., also handy for LAV's/HAV's (when combined with team's firepower otherwise quite useless in the beginning since they will give away your cover instantly) and grouped baddies. -armor (might help you survive a bullit or 2 if your lucky) - damage modifier (otherwise forget the 1shots against even slightly armored dudes)
I went the droplink route as to 'spawn' into safety and not in an all out firefight.... since that means instadeath in my case unless I can manage to sneak out when the rest is offing eachother... Also very helpfull to deposit on strategic points, and trust me this IS something I see way to little for now. When moving to your next spot, make that small detour and drop 1 near an objective, a strategic point on the map or simply where ever your team could use some help..
It might also be a good idea to take nanohives (ammo) since you will run out of ammo unless there is storage nearby. I decided to go droplink for the reasons mentioned above, some team spirit, some self conservation... in case I run out of ammo I either; A) hope a teammate has hives, B) try to reach an armory or C) when all else fails I get out the peashooter and go after the 1st badguy I see (jk). If I don't die, I'll go for the next (or an armory), if I do die, I'll simply respawn in safety with renewed ammo.... not the most efficient way, but works quite well for me...
As for skills i went for: Sniper riffle operation lvl5 (+dmg) Sniper riffle proficiency (-sway), but for now lvl1 feels good enough Weaponry lvl 5 (+dmg) weapon sharpshooter (+range) weapon capacity (+ammo) electronics lvl 4 + drop uplink deployment Sensor upgrade (better awareness of surroundings) and the rest is kinda all over the place for now just to try things out. (and like i said i`m only in it for like 2 weeks so still building slowly but surely)
Everything mentioned above is just from my personal experience/gameplay, probably by far the most effective, but it works for me and that's the most important.
Well that's enough random blabla; I think my best advice will still be play your own style and 'enjoy yourself'....
