Hey,
First up.......... this is the first FPS I have tried since my little brother gave me a whipping some 15 years or so ago on DOOM.
Never played one since!
Now, that may put me beyond help, I'm not sure, but we'll see.
Now, I'm looking at stats something like 12 deaths to 1 kill, which incredibly, doesn't put me at the bottom of the lists, but doesn't make me feel to good either.
I think my main problem is that I simply can not hit anything. The only time I find success at this is when I'm Sniping and I happen to have someone in my sights that is facing away from me.
I appreciate that without a video of me in action (that would just be a nightmare to watch) it's going to be hard to pinpoint my errors. But are there some general hints and tips someone can give?
Should I be knelt down (stance) to shoot, should I be running around with zoom on? Should I be using the directional twiddler (rarely play the ps3 so I don't even know the name of that thing on the pad) or should I just use left and right movement when someone is in front of me.
I understand that I am just plain bad at this, but I can't help but wonder in amazement at people that can take me down from miles off when they are using the (bah, forgotten the name) standard role (not heavy, scout or medic). They can be running towards me and I can fire a full two or three rounds off and not hit them (at least not kill them).
I'm just looking for some general advice on how to play these sorts of games............ I've never really been keen on them before, but I quite like the look of this and the fact that it links to EvE.
Are there any good sites out there that can 'coach' me along?
Regards

Thanks for the advice and the morale boost :)
I am in fact using the Charge Sniper Rifle as I can just sit there with it charged and wait for things.... whcih is where most of my kills come from. So, I'll stick to that for a while.
Can I ask what skills are good to pick up early in the game.
I'm trying not to apply to much EvE knowledge but the sig radius decrease is very temping, but I'm rarely snipped at myself so I'm not sure it's all that useful.
Any more tips..... please keem 'em coming
Regards

All great advice... thanks.
Microphone might be a bit of an issue as the Mrs goes nuts when I use it on EvE ..... though, no harm in trying ...... I think.
I don't know what SMG is, so I'll have to do some reading and get up to speed.
Please keep the tips coming, I'm sure I'm not the only useless one out there (please please let that be true).

Hey,
More great advice.... thank you all.
I think some of you need to get back on the EvE-O forums as it's missing your kind of (actually) helpful advice. That said, I'm a little better at that game than this one
A quick quesiton about using a headset as this is starting to sound like the single strongest piece of advice. I have a USB headset; can I just plug that into one of the ports (assuming they are USB) that the controllers use?
Also.... do you all use the PS3 controller or are you use keyboards and mice?

I play in the EU myself, but my times are totally anit-social :P
Thank you both. I'll see if i can get the headset working this evening. Only problem is that the PS is on the other side of the room to the sofa......
Also... an update to all of you that have offered great advice. You took the time to help me so, I'll take the time to provide updates..... not that I imagine that make good reading.
I've managed to get through two full rounds of battles today and have reduced my death count to around 4/5 per game and have now managed to get an average of 2 kills per game along with a few assists...... so I am really pleased with that and that I can report that the advice and tips are really working.
I've switched guns to one that holds around 60 rounds (Burst I think) and have removed the reacharger from my suit and put another shield in there, though I got the impression I was supposed to be removing something else to use another shield...... not sure though.
I am moving around a lot more and diving for cover as soon as I take hits rather than trying to find what was shooting me.
I'm like a lemming at the moment.... blindly following the closest person to me and just praying that they know more than I do........ and of course.... trying not to shoot them in the back....... which isn't easy sometimes.
Anyhows..... thank you all and if there are any more advices.... please keep them coming and I'll post some more random Newb questions soon, I'm sure!
Good hunting!

LEAP Browser wrote:all great advice, but how can I tell what weapons can be upgraded and what skills I need for them. Its all confusing. I play R3 which is nothing like this.
Hey,
Here I CAN help you.
This game runs similar to EvE, so I guess you have not played that.
Almost everything is a skill level based system so if you want that gun that has larger CPU and GRID, then you need to train skills that either A) reduce the requirements of the gun itself or B) improve your own CPU and GRID or C) both.
Now, in relation to your actual question. If you go to the market and find the gun you want press 'info', which i think is the triangle and it will call up new window that has tabs. Use L/R2 to move between tabs. One will tell you what it does, one will tell you its stats and another will tell you the 'per-requisite' skills you require.... and this is the screen you need.
Now, one thing to be wary of, is that it may tell you that you need XYZ skills however you may also need ABC skill to train XYZ.
Example:
To use (made up name) Electron Blaster 2 you require Blaster specializations. Now Blaster Specializations will require you to have the standard blaster skill to 5. So, just because you know what skill you need for the gun, it doesn't mean you can actually use it.
not sure if they allow pictures in forums here: http://i46.tinypic.com/ajxfgg.jpg
In the diagram. The guns requires the red skill set, however the red skill set requires the yellow skill set and can not be trained until all the yellows have been trained and trained to the correct level.
There is also the CPU and GRID requirements as shown above. So, just because you can 'use' the gun, it doesn't mean you can fit it. So, get the stats and measure that against what you have now and what 'fitting space' you have.
Something to be wary of is buying lots of new and better stuff in one go. As unless you have trained really well and have waited a while, it's unlikely to ALL fit at the same time.

JAX

Hopefully tomorrow I'll break the 1M SP mark.

Hi.
Thought I'd re post here than start something new, seeing as there is lots of useful info in this thread..... at least for me there was.
Anyhows.... I'm getting there. I can now get around 15-20k SP per game, however that is primarily as I am playing a support character (LOGI) which, at my levels, doesn't involve a whole lot of precise targeting.
I use reppers, nano's, drop-link and a Sniper Rifle when encamped, all of which have resulted in a significant boost to my SP earning..... used to be around 2k.
However I have some more questions as my actual targeting is still incredibly poor.
1. My brother owns a set of those 'funny' controllers, you know... the one you 'shake' at the screen and I am wondering if they perform any better to a standard controller. ]
1a. Do any of the top hitters use them?
2. Are there any games out there where I can practice my targeting without going through the loading screens of this game? Obviously, the targets would have to be as maneuverable as (or as close to it) humans from the game?
3. Failing any positive feedback to the above questions, are there any suggestions to improving ones aim?
Regards
Jax
ps... thanks to all those that have offered help and assistance. |

Thanks for the tips.....and the encouragement!
Any ideas on the 'sticks'? You know.... those things that you waggle at the screen.......
Do they work in this game? Strikes me that a gun (those plastic things) pointing at the screen is the way to go, though I'd imagine they are not compatible...
