i must b doing it wrong, every time i bring out a forge gun, i get swamped by infantry. Its not hard to take 1 or 2 down with an SMG, but by then others will come or the tank rolls over and finishes me off. Perhaps its wrong that i use a breach FG, because imo damage is the only reason to use a FG. I've toyed with the other variations, the assault is actually nice vs Infantry..., the standard variety iirc does less damage then the assault or breach. So the breach, even with its disadvantages wins out for tank stopping power.
I have taken out a few tanks with the breach, and a few drop ships with the assault, but only on open maps, never when a tank is spawned on closed ambush maps.... which is where tanks bring the greatest advantage, they shut down whole sections of map, and the pilot doesnt have to be concerned with objectives, only with forceing traffic into his team, and killing anything that pops its head up... like a FG heavy...
I really hate how it's been nerfed.
Alot of stuff seems to add up to making AV for heavies impractical. Bullet fire makes aiming the FG near to impossible, and missile splash damage just whacks everything out of focus. Slow movement means the heavy has to run around alot to position himself to catch the oft perpetually moving tanks, this in turn increases the chance of being found by an infantry unit. The rewards for AV don't match the risks or lay out.
At least some of the problems with AV are apparently being addressed with the next build (but playing my heavy is painful atm, and i end up just going logi fits)
I've read a dev post about how they are looking at how the camera is knocked about with impacts, and may tone it down. Tank speeds sounds like they are getting nerfed a little. And rewards for killing tanks might be going up.
As explanation, I play mostly on asia server, where population is still lowish, most of the time. There is not alot of team work, and most only use swarm launchers for AV (if at all).
Mostly i just hate the idea of cowering in a corner waiting for the tank side' infantry to finish the team off. Tanks should be good, but they need some Hard Counters, else they are just exploited at the expense of other players ability to impact a game.
There are a few people i know in game who after complaining about tanks and the lack of any counter, now play predominately tank games, I'm waiting for the next build in hopes, but I also am beginning to think that the only way to be able to take part in a battle is to roll out a tank.
sincerely, A disgruntled heavy, who doesnt want to be a heavy with an AR/SG, thinks the HMG is okay, but wonders about the elephant in the room that is the only other heavy weapon.
