I'd like to hear from some of the veteran players here, specifically those of you who run in coordinated squads consistently.
I have two questions to put to the forums.
#1. What role(s) does/can a Sniper spec'ed character play within your squad. In other words how does a Sniper/Scout contribute effectively to coordinated team/squad play? (presence of mics is assumed)
#2. What are the most most desired/least desired roles/skills specs for coordinated play with your squad, please list in order. [Alternately if you run with a consistent squad list your squad composition and why that's optimal for you].
My hope is that this thread will serve as a resource for new players and players who are wanting to get more into teamwork/squad play but have questions about it or are still deciding on a role to skill into.
Please keep responses constructive so the thread is easier to read (rather than wade through) Links to other relevant sources are welcome :)

well i can say for # 1 a sniper who is mobile and also has skills with an SMG or pistol.. and understands the maps well.. a good sniper usually covers our approach to an objective by firing over our assaulting heads.. also a defensive sniper can counter snipe from supply depots and also switches to AV or assault at the appropriate times.
#2 depends on who's online.. the preferable sniper is also one who can do another role besides sniping. a good squad usually has a logi/av guy, a couple assaults.. hopefully we get 6 man squads soon because 4 right now is kinda limited and we switch roles alot currently, so we each have more than 1 role going for us but of course we have our favorite role. i dont prefer more than 1 sniper and if there is one he has to be a good one and willing to take some personal risks.
basically a good sniper is willing to sacrifice some of his own KDR for the benefit of the squad/team.. like the area he's sniping might not be padding his KDR as much as another area but he is helping his team win the match by providing area denial to a key location that might not be as lucrative as another area but is helping his team win while taking a personal hit to his KDR

I agree with this. I have sniped for tebow several times and it comes down to the person sniping. If they do recon and call out what they see then you get someone that can kill enemies and lead the team. |

Recon / Forward Deployment.
Snipers have the ability to see down range and will either be ahead of your force (as I tend to do) or on a flank providing overwatch support. Calling out positions, incoming vehicles, and other such valuable information is pretty useful. Even if you don't have a microphone, looking at an enemy will put them on the mini-map and the HUD overlay with a chevron.
You also have the duty of keeping other opposing snipers down or, at the very least, looking for you. If the other snipers are looking through the hills, they aren't shooting your team. Most would consider this a pretty decent contribution.
I personally fit Drop Uplinks onto my sniper fits because of my position. It allows for tactical redeployment rapidly when your team starts to die at the push link or the flanks and has swung many battles because a lot of teams just aren't used to that level of flexibility. |

Thanks for all of the responses so far :) they help this couple weeks old sniper/scout have a better idea of what is valuable to the team (I'm glad those skill points I put into logi are still useful too ;) ).
I hope the responses keep coming (even if they're to say +1), IMO threads like this with responses from team oriented vets will really improve the learning curve for new players (or players wanting to try out a new role).
Cheers, Cross
ps ~ Tips on useful things to do even without a mic are also pure gold, They not only help those without mics, or who can't be on comms at a given moment but also help for better team play with those outside your squad which seems like an important skill to develop. |

I've been involved in a couple of threads lately on the forums debating the idea of snipers being OP'ed. As such I've decided to try and see how far I can push sniping (because the contention raised was that 'anyone can do it' so I'm giving it a shot).
If anyone would care to step forward and offer advice on builds, fits, tactics etc for being an effective sniper then please do so. Also if any other noobs like myself would care to join me in this test please feel free and post your results in this thread. Lets get CCP some good data to use

When I snipe, I counter snipe more than anything. Then call out Vehicles Position, Health, Type, etc. Also try to give a general movement direction if the enemy is gathering or whatnot. That's only when Im in a squad with corp mates though.
If Im solo, I counter snipe, try to pick off AV, then worry about assault folks. Some people seem to have problems with Heavies, I personally don't and I use the militia sniper rifle most often. I see no reason to upgrade when I can 1 shot other snipers and most assault, and 2 shot most heavies. Although the last couple days it's been taking me 3 shots for heavies, mind you that's still with the Militia Sniper rifle.
A snipers true purpose should be counter sniping, killing high profile targets when release happens, and being a spotter for the team. High Profile meaning Command Suits that are buffing their team or nerfing your team as the case may be. Also, if laser rifles are the anti material rifles, snipers should also start helping take out vehicles...
Above all else you are a scout first and foremost. Relay of information is and should be your primary concern. Especially since you have the best optics Ive seen in the game so far. |

#1: In my opinion, A - Run & Gun: Stays close to his squad, attacks long distance threats (snipers, turret gunners, etc.) or high priority targets.
B - Recon: Travels ahead of the team to provide information on enemy activity and, of course, provide cover fire during the attack.
C - Watchman: Defends a particular area/objective, and keeps the rest of the team informed about what's happening in said area.
#2: For A and B speed is a must, so any mobility modules would be a good idea. Also, carry a rifle with a high RoF.
For B and C cloaking modules (SOONGäó).
For C I suggest pumping up your defense, since you can't watch an area if you're dead. For rifles, I prefer power on this fit. You may be the only thing keeping an enemy from hacking an objective. If you have some room a damage modifier or two wouldn't hurt.
General advice: Don't become so focused on one target that you ignore the rest of your the team. If the enemy is running away, you've done your job. Remember, you're there to win the game, not kill entire enemy team by yourself.
Adaptability is a must. So be ready to fill many roles, even non-sniper ones. You can build a militia fit for just about anything, and switch into the needed fit at a supply depot or when respawning.
Many skills have bonus passive affects, like increased shields, armor regeneration, etc., so don't forget to skill these up along with your guns and dropsuits. |

There are a few snipers in my corp who've proven useful in squad combat. Their main role is counter sniping, and basically defending the squad from snipers. Snipers are a pain to deal with and the best weapon against them is another sniper. The other job they do is sitting above or a bit away from a cap point and cover us while we hack, the reach of a sniper is useful in getting guys before they become a problem.
Snipers who sit up on a hill somewhere picking off targets tend to be useless to the team. They usually are only getting kills that don't make much of a difference and contribute little to the team's goals. In order to properly contribute snipers need to get off their lone perch and join their team. killing the one guy coming up behind me while I hack is much more useful then killing a half dozen noobs standing 100m away waiting on a LAV. |

+ 1 op for being one of the rare snipers who might be actualy useful one day. Wicked that you want to be part of the team and actualy help.
90% of snipers are just useless air stealers.
Best thing you can do is get on coms and be ready to aid where asked. You will prob need to find a half good corp that will put you to work tbh. |

Thanks and finding a good Crop (or even consistent squad) to run with is a goal, just wanted to be sure I was practicing the right player skills in the meantime. (I've also taken up Logi as my alternate so I can adapt to the situation as it happens not be locked in one role no matter the battle).

Thanks for the response, I've been trying to improve my cover fire skills it's good to know I'm on the right track there. How about using the mobility of the scout suit to deploy Drop uplinks where would that stand on the hierarchy of value?

Thank you for the replies, I'm running out of characters this post so I'm keeping it short but I appreciate the information, I'll keep what you've said in mind :)
I really wish I knew more specifically how the radar/mini-map worked in Dust so that I could 'paint' targets for my squad. If anyone can point me in the right direction there that would be great :)
Thanks again to each of you who's responded so far.

If you're going to be by yourself a lot, I'd say probably a drop uplink or a nanohive, depends on what you plan on doing. If you're going to stick with the team, I'd talk with your teammates and see what is needed most. Edit:

Just place your reticle on the target, and they'll show up on the overhead map. But, as of now, only the squad leader can 'paint' the target for attack. But the order disappears if the target goes out of sight. So when a hard to destroy target (let's say a tank) runs to make repairs, you might need to keep an eye on it so the order stays in place. |

The purposes I found that the sniper excels in are the following:
- Being aggressive following the squad hacking objectives and take shots like other infantry, except also taking out other snipers and softening or killing heavies that would be more of a burden for your team.
- provide overwatch from a vantage point. Not only do you reveal more enemies to your team but you also aid in the push by thinning out clusters of enemies guarding objectives and saving your guys when they are out numbered or loosing the engagements with other dropsuits.
- Defending objectives and containing the enemy to the few they have. It depends on the situation, when your loosing snipers are a good way to use little manpower to prevent enemies from reaching multiple objective while your guys can use the majority of there force to take the remaining objectives. Like wise, If you are winning the game you can sort of play as goaly and stop anyone from sneaking around and turning the tide of the battle because they hacked the objective and CRUs all the way in the back.
When snipers do there job right they can change the outcome of skirmishes between your team and the enemy team in an instant, as well as taking out other snipers and high priority targets thats when they are actually useful |

as a sniper I find the long range support role invaluable, skill up on smg's to get you out of a sticky situation, deploy drop uplinks behind enemy lines to get squad members where they need to be, especially after running forward and hacking a few depots/cannons/etc, retreat to flanking positions and provide support data on upcoming threats. I'm not afraid to get stuck in to dirty work and I don't sit on mountains, don't care about kdr, just want to help my team to win ;) |

Often I will run a sniper team with my friends.
One guy runs logistics and drives a LAV. He picks up downed snipers, supplies ammo, and gets the team to safety when the need arises. Also having an automatic weapon comes in handy.
Two others will run snipers. Often coordinating shots to drop the top performers of the enemy team, heavy's, or enemy hacking our property.
All in all it's a good time. |

Have you guys got a channel and would you mind sending an invite? Or I can make a snipers uvt channel and we could all meet there? Sounds fun and would really like to try a few tactics with a group. I have seen what can happen if 3 snipers split up and cover objectives and each other.
Just started sniping full time again this evening and feeling rusty. Sure after a few more games tomorrow I'll get back into the flow of things.
