I'd like to hear from some of the veteran players here, specifically those of you who run in coordinated squads consistently.
I have two questions to put to the forums.
#1. What role(s) does/can a Sniper spec'ed character play within your squad. In other words how does a Sniper/Scout contribute effectively to coordinated team/squad play? (presence of mics is assumed)
#2. What are the most most desired/least desired roles/skills specs for coordinated play with your squad, please list in order. [Alternately if you run with a consistent squad list your squad composition and why that's optimal for you].
My hope is that this thread will serve as a resource for new players and players who are wanting to get more into teamwork/squad play but have questions about it or are still deciding on a role to skill into.
Please keep responses constructive so the thread is easier to read (rather than wade through) Links to other relevant sources are welcome :)

Thanks for all of the responses so far :) they help this couple weeks old sniper/scout have a better idea of what is valuable to the team (I'm glad those skill points I put into logi are still useful too ;) ).
I hope the responses keep coming (even if they're to say +1), IMO threads like this with responses from team oriented vets will really improve the learning curve for new players (or players wanting to try out a new role).
Cheers, Cross
ps ~ Tips on useful things to do even without a mic are also pure gold, They not only help those without mics, or who can't be on comms at a given moment but also help for better team play with those outside your squad which seems like an important skill to develop. |

I've been involved in a couple of threads lately on the forums debating the idea of snipers being OP'ed. As such I've decided to try and see how far I can push sniping (because the contention raised was that 'anyone can do it' so I'm giving it a shot).
If anyone would care to step forward and offer advice on builds, fits, tactics etc for being an effective sniper then please do so. Also if any other noobs like myself would care to join me in this test please feel free and post your results in this thread. Lets get CCP some good data to use

Sha Kharn Clone wrote:+ 1 op for being one of the rare snipers who might be actualy useful one day. Wicked that you want to be part of the team and actualy help.
90% of snipers are just useless air stealers.
Best thing you can do is get on coms and be ready to aid where asked. You will prob need to find a half good corp that will put you to work tbh.
Thanks and finding a good Crop (or even consistent squad) to run with is a goal, just wanted to be sure I was practicing the right player skills in the meantime. (I've also taken up Logi as my alternate so I can adapt to the situation as it happens not be locked in one role no matter the battle).
Patches The Hyena wrote:There are a few snipers in my corp who've proven useful in squad combat. Their main role is counter sniping, and basically defending the squad from snipers. Snipers are a pain to deal with and the best weapon against them is another sniper. The other job they do is sitting above or a bit away from a cap point and cover us while we hack, the reach of a sniper is useful in getting guys before they become a problem.
Snipers who sit up on a hill somewhere picking off targets tend to be useless to the team. They usually are only getting kills that don't make much of a difference and contribute little to the team's goals. In order to properly contribute snipers need to get off their lone perch and join their team. killing the one guy coming up behind me while I hack is much more useful then killing a half dozen noobs standing 100m away waiting on a LAV.
Thanks for the response, I've been trying to improve my cover fire skills it's good to know I'm on the right track there. How about using the mobility of the scout suit to deploy Drop uplinks where would that stand on the hierarchy of value?

Thank you for the replies, I'm running out of characters this post so I'm keeping it short but I appreciate the information, I'll keep what you've said in mind :)
I really wish I knew more specifically how the radar/mini-map worked in Dust so that I could 'paint' targets for my squad. If anyone can point me in the right direction there that would be great :)
Thanks again to each of you who's responded so far.

I completely forgot to mention the equipment slot. If you're going to be by yourself a lot, I'd say probably a drop uplink or a nanohive, depends on what you plan on doing. If you're going to stick with the team, I'd talk with your teammates and see what is needed most. Edit: Cross Atu wrote:I really wish I knew more specifically how the radar/mini-map worked in Dust so that I could 'paint' targets for my squad. Just place your reticle on the target, and they'll show up on the overhead map. But, as of now, only the squad leader can 'paint' the target for attack. But the order disappears if the target goes out of sight. So when a hard to destroy target (let's say a tank) runs to make repairs, you might need to keep an eye on it so the order stays in place.
Good to know thanks :) important stuff to when trying to be an effective scout.
